Pre-IB World History to 1500 Ms. Carmelitano 2015-2016 Course Syllabus E- mail: [email protected] Room: B207 Welcome to Pre-IB World History to 1500! I look forward to working with you this upcoming school year. In this course we will study the advances, culture, and interactions of humans from “Pre- History” until the Renaissance. Students will develop their skills of understanding and analyzing primary and secondary sources, utilizing maps to gain a better understanding of human interaction, and discovering how human beings have conquered their environments to develop thriving civilizations. At the end of this course, students will be prepared to successfully complete their SOL Assessment in World History and Geography to 1500. Students will also develop vital critical thinking and organization skills, as well as the confidence and independence which will help them to be successful in their future in the IB program.

Required Materials:  1.5 or 2 inch 3 Ring Binder dedicated ONLY for Global History to 1500  Notebook paper (loose-leaf paper)  5 tab dividers for binder (Maps, Notes, Handouts, Homework, Returned Tests and Quizzes)  Highlighter, pens (blue or black only for written assignments) Classroom Expectations:

1. Respect: Everyone in the classroom deserves respect, this includes: your teacher, your classmates, your substitutes, yourself. I do not tolerate bullying in any form. This classroom is a place where ideas should be freely shared. Derogatory language and name calling will NOT be tolerated. You are also expected to respect one another’s belongings. If it does not belong to you, please do not touch it.

2. Participation: Throughout the year you will be participating in discussions about history and activities in which you will explore the themes discussed in class. It is vital that you take part in the activities.

3. Due Dates: Due dates are final for homework, projects, and papers. Students who turn work in late can expect to receive a 5 point deduction per day every day the assignment is late. If you know you are going to be out, the assignment is still due, and can be found on my blog. You can e-mail the assignment to me, or hand it in prior to the date it is due. The only exception will be if you are sick.

4. Classroom Procedures: When you enter the classroom you are expected to take your seat and begin “bell ringer” activity. During class I DO NOT TOLERATE CELL PHONES, MP3 PLAYERS, IPODS, OR IPADS. If I see them they WILL be confiscated. I expect you to be respectful during class time. If you have a question, raise your hand, I love questions, so don’t hesitate to ask.

If you have missed a day of school due to illness, you are expected to make this work up within 5 days of coming back to school. All assignments and homework will be posted on my blog. Please check there for any missing assignments. Pre-IB World History to 1500 Ms. Carmelitano 2015-2016 Course Syllabus E- mail: [email protected] Room: B207 5. Tardiness: When the tardy bell rings, you are late. As per school policy, you will be marked late in the “tardy tracker”. As per school policy, four tardies will result in disciplinary action. Being on-time also means being “prepared,” with all necessary materials needed for class.

6. Cheating/ Plagiarism: Cheating/Plagiarism will not be tolerated. A student caught cheating on an assignment will receive an automatic “0,” a phone call home, and a written referral.

7. Electronic Communication: Students and parents may always contact me at my e-mail. I also have a blog in which students can find weekly assignments. The blog can be accessed at: http://blogs.spsk12.net/8576/

Remind101.com: I am registered at Remind101.com. Remind101 is a website that allows me to send text message reminders to parents and students. The site keeps student phone numbers anonymous. Students and parents are welcome to register for the service by texting the message “@globalmsc” to the number, “(424)835-7816”

Students will receive notifications before tests, and project due dates. However, I will not remind students of homework due dates, these can be found on the blog, and on my board in class. Students should write homework assignments down in an organizer each day.
