Hatchmen A hatchman is the vital link between the hold and the wharf he is the eyes and ears looking into the hold and directing the cargo onto the wharf. he reaffirmes the operations of the crane driver and is critical if lifting cargo from directly under the crane in areas where vision is restricted. HE IS THE VISION FOR THE HOLD FOREMAN AND CRANE DRIVER TO BE GIVEN THE ALL CLEAR TO SAFTELY LIFT CARGO TO BE DELIVERED TO A SAFE POSITION ON THE WHARF CHECKING FOR ANY MOVEMENTS WHICH MIGHT AFFECT THE CARGO OPS.

Stevedoring Should the guidance material refer to the qualifications (Cert II, Cert III and Cert qualifications IV in Stevedoring) that have been developed for the stevedoring industry?

We definately need recognition of skills on the wharf as we are becoming more casualised people become complacent. with casualisation and skills are thinly spread amongst employees.

Safety Induction Should the newly developed stevedoring ‘safety skill-set’ be used to underpin skill-set safety inductions?

As a safety rep and Cert IV qualified trainer the importance of safety should not be compromised and new and casual work groups need reaffirmation af the safety on the job and the dangers they might experience on vessels who do not have safety standards equivelent to the Aust Standards

Use of checklists Should the safety checklists, which set out examples of the types of hazards, and acceptable/unacceptable ways of handling those hazards, be maintained in the guidance material?

Everyone is responsible for safety and everyone learns about safety in different ways be utilising different methods of checking and monitoring safety we hopefully get the message through and not rely on one answer of checklists.
