Petition & Cover Letter from LU to Legislators

A Focus Day 2009 Resource for Local Units

Send this Petition from Your Local Unit to Your Legislators!

Hello PTA Presidents, Legislative Chairs and/or Secretaries: Please join fellow Washington State PTA local units in support of our advocacy event for WSPTA’s Top 5 Legislative Issues - Focus Day 2009 on February 26! Delivering this petition and cover-letter from your board is an easy, direct communication with your legislators – whether or not you attend Focus Day.

------

A 3-Step Action-Item for Your Local Unit:

1) Introduce a Motion at your next Local Unit or Council Board Meeting. Here is some suggest- ed language you may use:

Shall Our PTSA Unit Name Board of Directors endorse the completion and mailing of a petition and cover letter in support of Focus Day 2009, voluntarily signed by us and members?

Your motion requires a “second” and a majority vote to pass. After passage, go to step 2.

2) Circulate the attached petition for members to sign ASAP. Make sure each signer in- cludes their address and phone number – legislators require clear identification of their constituents (print as many of this doc’s 3rd page as needed). Do it now at the meeting!

3) Copy and mail all pages to your legislators. Make 2 copies of the cover letter (if you wish, edit it to be directly from your Exec. Board and to each legislator by name) and each signa- ture page - mail the original to your Senator and a copy each to your two Representatives; your Secretary may file with the Minutes a blank w/o signatures. Find your legislators and addresses at this link http://apps.leg.wa.gov/DistrictFinder/Default.aspx)

Your Local Unit’s petition WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE in this legislative session!

Thank you!

January, 2009

Dear Honorable Washington State Legislator,

Attached is a petition with signatures from your individual constituents associated with their WSPTA local unit (the original signatures are sent to the district’s Senator).

On February 26th advocates from across the state are traveling to Olympia for the member-hosted event, WSPTA Focus Day 2009, a public rally on the Capitol steps.

In addition to inviting you to join us on the Capitol steps for a 12:00 noon rally on our #1 issue of Basic Education Funding and the work of SB5627 Basic Education Finance Joint Task Force, your constituents wish to express their endorsement and support for each WSPTA’s Top 5 Legislative Issues: 2) Strengthen Math & Science Curriculum, 3) WASL Improvements, 4) Support Core 24, and 5) Support Rational Teacher Compensation.

The petition signers are specifically asking you to vote in favor of legislation in the 2009 Legislative Session that earnestly pursues the mandate of the Basic Education Finance Joint Task Force SB 5627 to review the definition of Basic Education, develop options for a new funding structure and all necessary formulas, and propose a new definition of basic education that is realigned with the new expectations of the state's education system.

Thank you for all you do on behalf of all constituents and communities of Washington State.

Sincerely,

Byron Shutz & Shelley Kloba
