Save your people, Lord, and bless your heritage, and govern them forever. Responsorial Psalm Psalm 1072 O give thanks to the Lord for he is good; for his mercy endures forever. Some went down to the sea in ships, to trade on the mighty waters. These have seen the deeds of the Lord, the wonders he does in the deep. For he spoke and raised up the storm-wind, tossing high the waves of the sea that surged to heaven and dropped to the depths. Their souls melted away in their distress. Then they cried to the Lord in their need, and he rescued them from their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed. They rejoiced because of the calm, and he led them to the haven they desired. Let them thank the Lord for his mercy, his wonders for the children of men. O give thanks to the Lord for he is good; for his mercy endures forever.

Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia. A great prophet has arisen among us, and God has visited his people. Alleluia. Communion Antiphon The eyes of all look to you, Lord, and you give them their food in due season.

Methodology for Personal Prayer

Time Make time during the day ~ 5 minutes is all you need. Let this be a set time, the same time ~ your time, every day.

Place Find a suitable place, somewhere where you will be

comfortable and be undisturbed for this short period of time.

Focus Use a crucifix and or a rosary to help you to focus.

Place them on a table close to your prayer space.

You may also use a candle and have your Bible in that place too ~

even if you don’t use it ~ yet!

Begin Always with the Sign of the Cross and in God’s Holy Name:

Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Open your heart to God e.g. if it’s in the morning say

‘I thank you Father for the gift of this new day and all that it holds for me.’

Then bring before God all the special people in your life.

Mention them by name and if they have any specific needs let God know.

After your prayer for other then pray for yourself and your needs that day.

Finally Conclude with the Lord’s Prayer, Hail Mary and Glory be,

finishing once again with the Sign of the Cross.

PRAYER FOR FATHERS Heavenly Father, You entrusted Your Son, Jesus, the child of Mary to the care of Joseph, an earthly father. Bless all fathers as they care for their families. Give them strength and wisdom, tenderness and patience; Support them in the work they have to do protecting those who look to them as we look to You for love and salvation, through Jesus our rock and defender. Amen. COMMUNION FOR THE SICK AND HOUSEBOUND Every Sunday after the 9.00am Mass, a dedicated team of Eucharistic Ministers take Holy Communion to all those who are sick and housebound in our parish. Job is rich, happy and successful; God allows him to be tested by Satan to see if he remains faithful. Having lost everything, possessions, children, health (even his wife suggests he ‘curse God and die’ (2:10)), his personal faith position is to embrace happiness and sadness equally. Three friends enter the narrative, discussing the problem of bad things happening to good people. No answer is reached, though they agree with the traditional teaching that such vengeance is brought on by sin. Job protests his innocence and the nature of injustice in general, but to no avail. Then a fourth character enters the narrative, offering a justification of God’s actions. God end’s his argument and ‘from the heart of the tempest’ (theophany) gives Job and the listener the answers to questions posed. We may take a simple message from today’s reading: all things, even the seas obey Him.

Second Reading (2 Corinthians 5 : 14 – 17) Paul’s letter to a church he knows intimately because he founded it is, in reality, the third letter (the first having been lost), sent to call them to order in the light of reports reaching him of unchristian practices. The first words of the letter link to general themes common to Job but with some notable differences: suffering and consolation are the stuff of life but here suffering is clearly met with an outpouring of consolation from the Father. Both suffering and consolation are to be embraced by the individual and shared by the community. This is offered as the model we are to imitate in our dealings with others. This is further underlined: Christ’s love has so ‘overwhelmed’ Paul that he feels he can do nothing but imitate Christ and in doing so deals a death blow to any other way of life which might deflect him from his chosen direction.

Gospel (Mark 4 : 35-41) The body of water referred to in today’s gospel is the Sea of Galilee: this features heavily in the preceding chapters and is the large body of water around which the Marcan Jesus begins his public ministry. It will be well known to the fishermen who became apostles, the brothers Peter and Andrew, and James and John, and it would seem logical to assume that a boat provided by one of these four would be used as a platform by Jesus from which to preach to the large crowd and then to transport him across the lake. Mark develops the story using a pattern similar to that which he uses in two further (following) miracle stories: a problem is encountered which Jesus tackles decisively, allowing the witnesses to receive the miracle marked by awe or astonishment. It is interesting to note that the fact that Jesus is asleep during the preliminaries of the storm and the storm at its height is interpreted as a lack of care rather that as possibly being a clear sign of fatigue! The scale of the rebuke (four words) seems tiny in contrast to the ferocity of the storm. Again we are reminded that the way we measure things is not necessarily God’s way
