ULMATEC PYRO – MORE THAN 60 YEARS OF KNOW-HOW More than 15 000 ships worldwide have been equipped with Pyro™ solutions since the company was founded in 1951. The company, initially known as “Pyrofabrikken” or "the Pyro factory", began by making boilers for small fishing boats. So successful has this product line been that little has changed in principle since its inception 64 years ago.

Ulmatec Pyro is today part of the Ulmatec group and located at Gamlem near Ålesund on the west coast of Norway.

Ulmatec acquired 55 per cent of the Pyro AS shares in 2008, and the company has subsequently invested in production shops and administration building. Heavy investment has also been made in continued development of Pyro’s technology and system design.

In its 60th year, Ulmatec Pyro has invested in the future and is continuing to prosper. Backed by long-term ___ experience and customer feedback, its highly skilled organisation aims to be the best at serving the customer and to maintain its position as a leading manufacturer and supplier of heating and waste treatment systems for the marine industry.

Pyro founder Palmar Bjørnøy (Picture Palmar Bjornoy.jpg) was a Norwegian ship’s engineer, resistance fighter and businessman, best known in Norway as a member of the “Shetland gang” fighting the German occupiers in the Second World War. He was awarded the War Cross, Norway’s highest gallantry decoration, for his resistance work. His service as a marine engineer began on the fishing vessels first used by the Shetland gang, and from the spring of 1943 on modern anti-submarine destroyers acquired by the Norwegian Navy.

With 54 trips across the North Sea, Bjørnøy was the member of the gang who took part in the largest number of these “Shetland Bus” voyages to and from the UK. He was described as the right-hand man of leader “Shetland Larsen”.

He remained with the Norwegian Navy until 1949, and after demobilisation founded Pyro in 1951 in his home community of Gamlem in Haram local authority on the west Norwegian coast.

A solution from Ulmatec Pyro utilises waste heat, and uses fuel only when such “green” energy is not sufficient/available. Heat generators and consumers are split into separate temperature circuits and connected together for optimal energy saving.
