Community Mentor Position Description: Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club
The Community Mentor’s (CM) primary responsibility is to serve as a liaison between the Center for Civic Engagement and its various constiuents represented by faculty, staff, Community Based Learning students, and our Community Partner agencies. In doing so, CMs guide the overall CBL experience for their peers, and when possible, work with local agencies and organizations to develop, implement and coordinate campus-community partnerships designed to address community identified needs. This position sometimes begins as a Community Mentor “Semester in Training” position with the opportunity to transition into a CM position in the following semester. This position requires a consistent demonstration of maturity, attention to detail, excellent time management skills, as well as strong interpersonal and communication skills. CMs are expected to maintain a high level of professionalism/social responsibility where choices on the job, as well as off the job reflect positively on the CCE, SLU and your assigned community partnership.
The CM for the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club (OGBC) will be in direct contact with Mr. Tom Luckie Jr., Executive Director, and will oversee students placed here. As stated on their website, “The Boys & Girls Club is a positive place for kids! The Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club was established in 1964 by a group of people that believed a place was needed to serve boys of the Ogdensburg area to provide them with educational, recreational, social skills, and other positive traits. Admitting its first ever girl member in 1975, today the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club serves over 1,000 boys and girls a year from Ogdensburg and throughout St. Lawrence County.” This placement is located approximately 19 miles from campus (approximately 30 minutes driving). As a CM, you have the following job expectations: GETTING THE SEMESTER STARTED Attend CM Training (4– 8 hr) Set on-campus orientation date/time and reserve space Send email to Community Partner and confirm agency orientation date/time/location Send introduction email to Faculty Send introduction email to CBL students Set 1:1 meeting day/time with assigned CCE staff person ON-CAMPUS ORIENTATION(30 min – 1 hr) Review CBL Dates and Deadlines and other CBL Requirements (attendance, dress, contract, mid- semester evaluations, Festival of CBL, etc.) Provide Agency Orientation date/time and review any required paperwork Assist students in setting up NobleHour accounts, applying appropriate opportunity code, and review how to track hours Discuss transportation options
Bi-Weekly in this instance means every two weeks. Updated Spring 2015 AGENCY ORIENTATION If schedule allows, every attempt should be made to attend the agency orientation (30 min – 1 hr) Ensure that CBL students have completed all required paperwork and any additional steps necessary to complete status as a volunteer. Such examples include: volunteer application, PPD test, fingerprinting, etc. ON SITE RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervision: depending on the Community Partnership, the CM may be required to supervise CBL students while at placement site: time varies Bi-weekly review of Agency or CBL Time Logs: review placement site time logs (either student or visitor log) to ensure accuracy with NobleHour submission CBL STUDENT COMMUNICATION: Bi-Weekly Email or Call to CBL students as it relates to their CBL placement: 15 – 30 min Face-to-Face Meeting: when necessary to address placement related concerns Mid Semester Evaluations: only if prompted by a mid-semester evaluation will CMs be required to conduct 1:1 meetings. Review evaluations and other supporting correspondence and email a 2-3 sentence summary per student to the respective faculty member (with a CC to the [email protected] account) to include total hours earned to date COMMUNITY PARTNER COMMUNICATION: Face-to-Face (bi-weekly) Meeting with Community Partner to discuss CBL Students: 15-30 min Email or Call the Community Partner if it is necessary to discuss CBL Students outside of the bi- weekly meetings: 15 – 30 min End of Semester Meeting: using the the End of Semester Community Partner Evaluation of Program as a guide, discuss successes/areas of improvement, ideas for the future, and any logistical details. Then, provide the CCE with a brief summary of the conversation outlining important points. Send summary to the [email protected] account: 30-45 min When necessary, assist with End of Semester Evaluations of CBL students: 5 min each student Thank You Card CBL PROFESSOR COMMUNICATION: Introduction Email Mid Semester Evaluations: email a 2-3 sentence summary per student to include total hours earned to date: 5 min per student Face-to-Face Meeting: when necessary OTHER CCE MEETINGS, OBLIGATIONS, AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: PAYROLL: adhere to required deadlines for submitting payroll hours in both NobleHour (required reflection) and in the SLU portal 1:1 Meeting: meet with assigned CCE staff person to discuss logistics: 30 min (every 2 weeks) CCE Staff Meeting: 45 min (bi-weekly) 6 Leadership Seminars/semester: 1.5 hours each Daily: reading and answering any CCE related emails: 15 minutes Once per Month: attend service event with fellow CM staff: 2 - 4 hours CCE Fundraising Events: assist with planning, implementing, and day of event responsibilities (time varies) When Needed: anything related to prepping for a CM Bonding Activity: This depends on the activity and when it is taking place, you might have hours for this one week but not the next. 15 min – 1 hr When Needed: assist Publicity & Events Team in advertising CCE related events and opportunities (for example: student organization fair and tabling at events)
