Course Syllabus 6th Grade Math 1.Washington Court House Middle School 2.6th Grade Mathematics

Description Mathematical instruction is planned, implemented and assessed according to the Ohio State Standards which are set forth by the Ohio Department of Education. The Common Core Standards are the adopted standards by the State Board of Education.

Partnering for Success Mrs Pierce, Mr. Tattersall, and Mrs. Hixson will be working together throughout the year to help all of the 6th grade students achieve success in mathematics. We are all very excited about the forthcoming year! We are committed to show growth and achievement for each student.

Expectations Students will learn and follow all classroom rules and procedures at all times. Students will consistently work to their fullest potential to fulfill all learning objectives. Students will always maintain a positive attitude and treat everyone with respect.

Daily Materials Students are expected to bring each of the following materials to class every day:  Paper  Pencil  Erasers  Textbook 1. Each student will be assigned their own textbook which they are able to take to and from school as needed. Each student is held responsible for each book they are assigned in the beginning of the year. Our textbook has two volumes, which every student will receive.  Three Inch Three Ring Binder (4 sections)

Grading System Mr. Tattersall and Mrs. Hixson will gather each student’s grade by using three different forms of assessment. They are:

Quizzes allow students to demonstrate what they Quizzes 35% have retained over multiple lessons of instruction. Tests allow teachers to assess the level of learning Tests 60% across an entire unit that has been taught to each student. Quarterlies allow students to demonstrate what they Quarterlies 5% have retained over the duration of the quarter

Grading System (Cont.) We will be using a weighted grading system. The second column above is how each type of assessment will be weighted. By weighted we mean that each of the three sections above will be a certain percentage of each student’s grade. Tests have the most importance (60%) followed by quizzes (35%) and quarterlies (5%). Projects and writing assignments have the potential of being graded as a quiz or Course Syllabus 6th Grade Math test depending on the importance of the assignment. In this case, the description of the assignment (test or quiz) will be clearly communicated with the student prior to the assignment being delivered.

Short cycle assessments or SCA’s will be a used as a short and quick formative assessment that allows the instructors to gain knowledge of how well a group of student’s can apply a taught learning objective. This allows Mr. Tattersall and Mrs. Hixson an opportunity to understand how well they have taught a lesson and how well students have understood a lesson. These will be given after a lesson is taught and will not directly affect a student’s grade.

Please continue to monitor Parent Access to check your current grade and completion of your assignments.

Grading Scale Below is the grading plan the entire middle school. In sixth grade mathematics we will be using this scale to calculate which percentage deserve a particular letter grade. Percentages Letter Grade Grade Points 93-100 A 4.00 90-92 A- 3.67 87-89 B+ 3.33 83-86 B 3.00 80-82 B- 2.67 77-79 C+ 2.33 73-76 C 2.00 70-72 C- 1.67 67-69 D+ 1.33 63-66 D 1.00 60-62 D- 0.67 57-59 F+ 0.33 56 & below F 0.00

Homework Homework will be assigned to students as a way to practice, grow, and refine their skills in mathematics. Work that is assigned as homework is expected to be completed for the following school day unless otherwise instructed. Students who have not completed their homework are not prepared for class and are in violation of the classroom rules. Homework will be monitored daily.

Daily homework assignments will be posted on the classroom Parent Access web page. Directions to access Parent Access are included in the yellow folder that was received at 6th grade orientation or you may contact Mr. Tattersall or Mrs. Hixson for help. Course Syllabus 6th Grade Math Mathematics Resources The middle school has adopted a mathematics resource. Using these resources students will have the opportunity to refine and enhance their mathematics skills. This resource may also be used for assessments.

Please log in to the resource titled “connectED” by going to the webpage connected.mcgraw-hill.com. Students and parents can retrieve their username and password from their teacher at anytime. If a username or password is lost or forgotten please contact your teacher.

Retake Policy Each student is allowed to retake each test. This plan is under evaluation and may change during the year. A “retake intervention” must be completed before a retake test is administered.

Attendance and Makeup Policy If you have to miss a day, you are responsible for any missed work. Please see your teachers for notes and assignments immediately upon returning to school.

Social Media The 6th grade math team will be using social media to connect with parents and students. These forms of communication are for educational purposes only. Using these forms of communication the teachers will send reminders about math, which may include homework, assessments, specials announcements, and other important news.

Please connect with us through Twitter, Instagram, and Remind.
