REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: Carter, Carol, Joyce Bishop, Sarah Kravits Keys to Success: Building Analytical, Creative, and Practical Skills Brief Version. Pearson (Physical or on-line version) Access Code required. SUCCESS IN SLS 1101 Success in this class depends upon attendance and participation. You are expected to be in class on time and to participate in classroom discussion and out-of-class activities. There will be some sort of work to be turned in each week.  Attendance College rules stipulate that a student in a class that meets twice per week may be dropped after four unexcused absences. Points are given for on-time attendance and deducted for tardiness and leaving early. It is your responsibility to notify your instructor if you have an excusable absence.  Participation This is a skills class. You are here to learn, or to perfect the methods you have already learned, how to be a successful college student. I expect you to demonstrate the skills we will be discussing: being to class on time, proper communication with class members and instructor, and participation in class discussions, note-taking, and out-of class activities. I do not expect to see any negative or disruptive behaviors: side conversations with classmates during class discussions, phoning, texting, sleeping, showing up with devices plugged into your heads, lacking texts or materials, or anything else I notice. This is a place where we treat each other and the process with respect. If your cell phone rings during class, I will answer it.  Tests Every chapter has an accompanying quiz, so you can demonstrate how well you have mastered the materials. You will also get to practice the most common types of tests you will take while in college: multiple choice, timed writing, machine-scored, etc.  Extra credit There are many opportunities to get active in SPC and the community. If you feel a need to bolster your grade, you can advance it one level by volunteering in the community. Boys & Girls Club, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Academy Prep, the Collegiate High School, etc. all offer opportunities for service.  Disability Statement: If you wish to receive special accommodations as a student with a documented disability, please contact the Office for Students with Learning Difficulties (OSSD), phone 341-4758. If you have a documented hearing loss, please contact the program for the deaf/hard of hearing, phone 791-2628. If you will need assistance during an emergency evacuation, please contact your Campus Learning Specialist about arrangements for your safety.

 Academic Honesty SPC has an academic honesty policy. It is your responsibility to be familiar with the policies, rules, and the consequences of violations. There is no tolerance for cheating and academic dishonesty. Discipline can range from a zero on a specific assignment to expulsion from a class with a grade of F. Note that copying/pasting published information, whether it is from your textbook or the internet without citing the source is plagiarism and violates this policy. Even if you change the words slightly, the ideas are someone else’s, so you still have to cite your sources. Cheating, plagiarism, bribery, misrepresentation, conspiracy and fabrication are defined in Rule 6Hx23-4.461, Student Affairs: Academic Honesty Guidelines, Classroom Behavior.
