ADVISORY BOARD COMPREHENSIVE TRAINING IN HIV/AIDS FOR NURSES
A course will be developed and delivered to address issues related to the understanding of HIV/AIDS in the care and prevention of individuals with this disease in El Salvador. The course will be designed for nurses working in hospitals and other health care institutions in El Salvador and will be taught by St. Jude and Salvadorian multidisciplinary team members in health care including physicians, nurses, psychologist, social workers, pharmacists and counselors. The course will utilize the facilities of the Sociedad de Profesionales de Enfermeria S.A. DE C.V. (SODEPROE) and other health care institutions in San Salvador. SODEPROE facilities were selected because of the availability of classroom space equipped with computers and high speed internet network, food service, dormitory facilities, and staff experienced in the education of pediatric nurses. An advisory Board will oversee the program planning, implementation and evaluation.
1. Charge for Advisory Board: The members of the advisory board for the educational program titled Comprehensive Training in HIV/AIDS for Nurses are charged with the responsibility of overseeing the timely and successful implementation of the project objectives including appropriate expenditure of funds granted by the World Aids Foundation (WAF).
2. Composition of Advisory Board: The Board is composed of educators, physicians and administrators collectively experienced in educating adult learners, educating health care workers in El Salvador and experts in the field of HIV/AIDS. The members of the Advisory Board include (listed in alphabetical order): Lynne Jordan Bowers, Ph.D., Miguela A. Caniza, M.D. Luis Castaneda, M.D., Jim Creighton, M.D., J.D., Nora Donahue, R.N., B.S, Pat Flynn, M.D., Gilma Grimaldi, R.N., Ayda Nambayan, R.N., DSN, Ernesto Pleites, M.D., and Rodrigo Siman, M.D.
3. Specific Responsibility of the Advisory Board: a. Review and approve the educational core curriculum b. Review and approve teaching materials c. Designate tasks for specific individuals d. Review and approve criteria for instructors of the educational program e. Review and approve admission requirements for students f. Review and approve all evaluations and evaluation processes g. Review and approve schedule of classes h. Review and approve Educational Coordinator progress reports i. Review and approve the teaching institutions guidelines in the educational administration pertaining to: i. Hygiene and safety of the educational facility ii. Health and Nutrition of the students iii. Transportation j. Review and approve the individual teaching responsibilities k. Review and select final pool of students
4. Time commitment of Advisory Board: The program will be pursued on an aggressive schedule. Advisory Board members are asked to attend formal meetings in October (El Salvador), December (El Salvador) and April (U.S.) in- person or via internet conferencing. These meeting track program milestones, that is, in October the curriculum and teaching responsibilities will be defined with the Salvadoran faculty, in December final arrangements will be made for the first course that begins in January, and in April the evaluation of the first three training sessions will take place prior to the final two sessions. Additional working group meetings will be held with a subset of Board members weekly. Board members will be polled by e-mail to review educational materials and programmatic issues.
5. Anotated list of Advisory Board Members (listed in alphabetical order)
Lynne Jordan Bowers, Ph.D. administrative director, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital International Outreach Program. Seven years experience as director of externally funded research and education programs, five years experience as an administrator of international health programs and 16 years experience teaching biology, and human anatomy and physiology to adult learners.
Miguela Caniza, M.D. principal investigator for the program, assistant member, St. Jude Department of Infectious Diseases; assistant professor of Pediatrics, University of Tennessee Health Science Center; and director of Infectious Diseases initiatives, St. Jude International Outreach Program. Dr. Caniza is board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric infectious diseases, cares for pediatric patients, and directs active infectious diseases programs for St. Jude International Outreach in Africa, China, and Latin America.
Luis Castaneda, M.D. Dr. Castaneda is an assistant member of the Infectious Diseases Department and coordinator of the Immunodeficiency Clinic of Hospital Nacional de Niños Benjamin Bloom. He is also the secretary of the Pediatric Society of El Salvador.
Jim Creighton, M.D., J.D. is the co-PI for the project. Dr. Creighton is a clinical consultant for the Department of Infectious Diseases at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He is board certified in family medicine and cares for patients with HIV/AIDS in the out-patient unit. In addition, he is an advisor for the Infectious Diseases – International Outreach program, on matters related to the international HIV/AIDS initiative. Dr. Creighton’s work at St. Jude focuses on HIV/AIDS in Central America and Africa.
Nora Donahue, R.N., B.S. Mrs. Donahue has worked at St. Jude for the past 20 years as Nursing Clinical Coordinator. She is the nursing director of International Nursing Education for Latin America, an International Outreach program at St. Jude, and director of the International Training Center for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nursing in El Salvador. She has extensive experience in administering educational training to nurses.
Pat Flynn, M.D. Dr. Flynn is a member of the Department of Infectious Diseases at St. Jude and holds the Arthur Ashe Chair in Pediatric AIDS Research. She is the director of St. Jude’s Translational Trials Unit, which oversees all of the clinical trials for treatment of HIV/AIDS at St. Jude. In addition, Dr. Flynn sees patients at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center in Memphis. The major focus of Dr. Flynn’s work is the clinical investigation of management strategies for infectious diseases in immunocompromised hosts, with an emphasis on HIV/AIDS and fungal infections, HIV/AIDS-related studies, pharmaceutical company studies, and institutional studies. Dr. Flynn has participated extensively in national and international conferences on infectious complications in immunocompromised hosts. In 2002 she was guest speaker at the First National Forum for HIV/AIDS in the Mother and Child in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Gilma Grimaldi, R.N. Ms. Grimaldi has extensive experience in nursing (including care of patietns withHIV/AIDS), nursing administration, and nurse education in El Salvador. Since 1999 she has contributed to educational curriculum development and course coordination and admistration at the Inernational Training Center for Pediatric Oncology Nurses in El Salvador.
Ayda Nambayan, R.N., DSN. Dr. Nambayam is the Curriculum and Distance Learning Developer for the International Outreach program at St. Jude.
Ernesto Pleites, M.D. Dr. Pleitez is the chief of the Infectious Diseases Department of Hospital Nacional de Niños Benjamin Bloom in El Salvador and vice president of the Pediatric Society of El Salvador. He completed his training in pediatric infectious diseases at the Instituto Nacional de Pediatria, Mexico City, Mexico. For 10 years he has participated actively in all aspectos of the care of children with HIV/AIDS.
Rodrigo Siman, M.D. Dr. Siman is a member of the Infectious Diseases Department of Hospital Nacional de Niños Benjamin Bloom. Also, he is the director of the National Program for Prevention and Control of STI/HIV/AIDS of the Ministry of Health in El Salvador. He is one of the driving force behind the establishment of the Center of Excellence for HIV/AIDS, which is part of the Hospital Nacional de Niños Benjamin Bloom.
