Stockholm, XX 2012 Press release from Arlanda Express Arlanda Express creates calm oases for stressed travellers As a contrast to the stressful environments that today’s air passengers are subjected to, Arlanda Express has created a number of oases of calm in the form of various artistic installations. All of the installations have a distinctive Stockholm theme and give travellers an opportunity to also experience environments that are more inspirational, contemplative and tranquil during their trip. They can be enjoyed at the Arlanda Express terminal in central Stockholm and at Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
The experience begins in the Arlanda Express waiting room at Stockholm’s Central Station, where travellers are met by the iconic images and sounds of the Stockholm archipelago.
Arlanda Södra Station At Arlanda Södra Station (Arlanda South), under a specially designed, wing-shaped roof and by a new piece of designer furniture, passengers can visit a sound room and relax to sounds from a number of characteristic Stockholm environments.
On the escalators leading up to the airport terminal travellers encounter a literary theme. The southern exit has sounds and images from the Mosebacke area of Stockholm, inspired by August Strindberg’s novel The Red Room, which is set in Mosebacke. On the escalators at the northern exit travellers experience audio-visual impressions inspired by Sonja Åkesson’s poems of her life in the Stockholm suburbs and on Drottninggatan in the centre of the city in the 1960s.
Arlanda Norra Station From the International Terminal escalators take travellers to the Arlanda Express trains via two mezzanine floors.
The southern mezzanine features a panorama of the archipelago with sound installations, from a tiny island on the outskirts of the skerries. On the northern mezzanine passers-by are met by welcoming sounds and images from the Stockholm waterfront at Slussen, the Old Town and Skeppsholmen island.
Elevators The elevators between the platform and the terminals have also been given a new visual and auditory design. An acoustic signal complemented with lights guides travellers to the right elevator door. Once inside the elevator, the short journey is made to a background of sounds from the Swedish forest.
The installations are the result of collaboration between A-Train, Hans Birkholz BAU Architects, Björn Hellström and Clas Torehammar Tyréns.
