Fourth Annual MAJOR (Ret’d) ARCHIE CAIRNS CUP held 08 January 2005

The fourth annual Major (Ret’d) Archie Cairns Cup was held on Saturday 08 January 2005 at the Walkley Armouries Officers’ Mess. As envisioned by Archie Cairns, this contest allows the younger and less experienced competitors to test their abilities for prizes normally reserved for the more senior players. The encouragement of the next generation of pipers is always utmost in the running of this contest. The 2005 contest featured a number of these up and coming players, with this year’s contest won by Jonathan Verrett of the Sam Scott Memorial Pipe Band. Second place went to Karrie McLeod (left) and third place to Clare Reeler (right).

It was again our pleasure to have Pipe Major Colin Clansey of the 2 CMBG Pipe Band and Glengarry Grade 2 Pipe Band (pictured right) as our judge and recitalist. Mixing old favourites with tunes that only Colin’s fingers could wrap around, the extremely entertaining recital was the perfect way to start off the year 2005.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> January 2005 DRUM MAJOR GARY SHANNON CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY WITH THE AIR COMMAND PIPES & DRUMS

The Air Command Pipes & Drums (ACPD) is a Regular Force Volunteer Pipes & Drums Band, based in Ottawa, Ontario. The ACPD was officially created on 07 October 1949 and has the distinction of being the longest serving Air Force (RCAF) Pipe Band in the Canadian Forces. The Band has two Regular Force musicians, Chief Warrant Officer Ian Ferguson, Canadian Forces Pipe Major and Warrant Officer Steve Lanning, the ACPD Drum Instructor. The remainder of the band’s 38 musicians are volunteers and associates (military, retired military and civilians). The ACPD are a sub-unit of The Central Band of the Canadian Forces under the direction of their Commanding Officer, Major Gerry Heslip.

This year marked a special occasion for Drum Major Gary Shannon (WO retired). Not only is Gary celebrating 43 years as a member of the band but in particular, his 20th year as the band’s Drum Major. As pictured below, Gary recently received his Drum Major Walking Cane, or “Mini Mace” as it is affectionately known.

Mr. Gary Shannon joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1952 and served with the Regular Force for twenty years. He first became involved in music in 1956 as a volunteer member of the Air Force Pipes & Drums, while based in Marville, France. Upon his return to Ottawa in 1961, he joined the RCAF station Rockliffe Pipes & Drums (later renamed the Air Command Pipes & Drums). As a volunteer member through the years, he has performed as a snare, tenor and bass drummer, and completed the cycle when he was officially appointed Drum Major in 1984.

Gary’s continued loyalty and enthusiasm for Canadian Forces Pipe Bands and in particular, the ACPD, is an inspiration, not only for all CF band members, but for the public as well. Congratulations Gary!!
