Mandates of the Curriculum Committee and Sub Committees

Dr. D’Eon asked members for changes to the mandates. The changes made to the subcommittees can be made in the meeting and do not need to be passed at Faculty Council.

Members shared their comments about the mandates; these have been noted and will be re-posted on the wiki.

June Curriculum Committee Retreat

A proposed agenda has been put up on the wiki. https://wiki.usask.ca/display/umecc/Retreat+on+the+Clinical+Clerkship+June+23+2010

Dr. D’Eon wanted members input. Here were some suggestions:

 Get input from clerkship coordinators as this retreat is for them as well

 Have a document with definitions and terms re: clerkship

 Dr. McKague suggested that we have Dr. Smith-Windsor speak at the beginning of the retreat to introduce integrated clerkship - there may be people that are not familiar with the structure – Dr.D’Eon commented that he was planning on covering this information in the pre-reading. Dr. McKague said that not a lot of people have time to do pre=reading, especially clinicians.

 Have clear objectives of what the retreat is to cover and what are the expectations for the result.

 Introduction to the current clerkship at the College of Medicine, why we need to change it, the problems, what works well and what doesn’t. Why did our clerkship evolve this way? What is the rationale for changing our curriculum in terms of distributed medical education? It would be useful to see what other schools in Canada are doing in their clerkship.

 Group recordings- At the retreat in June 2010 when the small groups get together this information should be recorded as well as when the group meets all together. There will be one person in each group responsible for taking notes.

These changes as well as others have been added to the agenda and re-posted on the wiki. We will discuss this again at the May meeting.

LMCC Prep

Afra brought to the committee’s attention that the prep session that the college offers for the LMCC exams needs improvement. The prep that the college offered in 2009-2010 academic year was 6.45 hours in JAHD and sessions organized by CH&E and Internal Medicine.

Committee members felt that it was a good idea that we improve these sessions, but how do we go about doing this? We are too late for this past year but can make changes for next year. One suggestion was to assign the course to residents who had recently taken the LMCC Pt. 1.

There weren’t enough committee members at the April meeting, so this item will be addressed in May.

2 Next Meeting: Wednesday May 19th at 12.30pm
