Issue 3 Your Monthly Viewing Guide March 2001

A hurricane has come to Sesame Street! After the hurricane has passed through, Big Bird discovers that the wind and the rain have destroyed his nest. Big Bird goes through many feelings about losing his home. He feels sad, angry and upset. His friends do their best to comfort him.

Snuffy helps Big Bird remember that even though some things have changed because of the hurricane, a lot of things are still the same, like all the great friends that Big Bird has on Sesame Street. He is also reminded that the fun everyday routines that they have always done, like saying the alphabet, are still going to happen. Even though Big Bird is sad, he realizes how lucky he is to have great friends help him through this tough time and offer to help him rebuild his nest.

Big Bird is faced with a very difficult change in his life. He has lost the home that he has always known. He goes through feelings of sadness, shock and disappointment. We all deal with change and disappointment in our lives and what we realize, along with Big Bird, is that having friends to support us through times of change and sharing how you’re feeling with others is helpful. Big Bird and his friends deal with their emotions in different ways like using music and art to express how they are feeling.

Theme: Facing changes and dealing with emotions

ACTIVITIES Talk about change Talk to your children about how Big Bird was feeling and how they feel when they are faced with a change in their life. For example, changes that your child may be facing could be starting preschool or expecting a new brother or sister. List some things that your child has adapted to, like sleeping in a bed rather then a crib or trying new foods, and celebrate it.

Paint how you feel Encourage children to draw and paint pictures of how they feel about the new experiences they have or about things that may seem scary. This will help them to express and talk about their feelings about things going on in their lives. So, get out some crayons or paint and some paper and have fun. Talk about the pictures together.

Act it out Talk about the different things that you may hear or see during a storm or hurricane. Imitate the different sounds by clapping like thunder, or blowing like the wind or tapping like the rain. Put on some music and act out a storm by being the wind or the rain.
