FUNCTION The chairman of the radiology is responsible for administration of the Radiology Department of the establishment.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES Cooperate with other departments to coordinate radiology services with other patient care services. Establish and enforce safety regulations for employees and patients. Prepare budgets for radiology. Supervise personnel in radiology. Instruct students/interns/residents in radiology theory and practices. Other duties as required. Involved in purchasing of new equipment for department with regards to needs and specifications. Deals with departmental and personal problems of staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS Work involves sitting, standing and walking. Frequent interruption due to position (many documents need signature). Has to deal with problems from patients and staff. May be exposed to infection and radiation hazards.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS Must have good physical and mental health. Requires patience and diplomatic attitude.

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE Preferably of Saudi Nationality, must be holding a certificate in radiology recognized by the Saudi Council for Health Specialties (e.g. Saudi Board, American Board, Canadian Board). Is the most senior / suitable person in the field preferably holding a certificate in Hospital Administration.

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

POSITIONS SUPERVISED: All positions other than the Chairman of the Dept.

FUNCTION The Technical Director of the radiology is responsible for all operations of the Radiology Department of the establishment.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES Works closely with Head of the Department and hospital administration in the planning regarding equipments, staffing and services of the department. Is responsible for the organization and the overall operation of the diagnostic imaging department. Ensures quality patient care for all age groups. Maintains performance and efficiency of equipments and staff in compliance with hospital policy and procedures and local standards. Maintains adequate supplies for the department and assists in budgeting where necessary. Interacts professionally with patients and families. Coordinates the department’s in-service training and cooperates with safety and preparedness for fire and disaster. Delegate’s authority and responsibilities to department personnel as is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS Will be active throughout the diagnostic imaging department with direct professional contact with all members of staff. Daily work requires walking, standing and sitting and is subject to frequent interruption. May be exposed to infection in patient areas and radiation hazards.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS Must have good physical and mental health to deal with all aspects of job. Must be able to act quickly and efficiently in difficult situations and problems involving staff or patients. Needs an ability to motivate all staff supervised by this position and maintain appropriate professional discipline and objectivity.

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE Satisfactory completion of formal radiographic technology training from a body recognized by the Saudi Council for Health Specialties. Minimum 10-years continuous experience in the field in supervisory positions, medium to large establishments.

RADIOLOGIST (Resident – R1 to R4)

FUNCTION The radiologist performs professional diagnostic and treatment procedures on the request of a qualified physician. He/She interprets the images produced to give a diagnostic report to the requesting physician, so appropriate treatment and care can be administered to the patient.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES Performs all cases with supervision of Senior Registrar/Consultant, privileged in the area of work. All cases reported must be done so with supervision of a Senior Registrar/Consultant privileged to do so. Reports must be verified by supervising Senior Registrar/Consultant.

WORKING CONDITIONS Usually works in an image reading room. Will be active throughout the diagnostic imaging department with direct, professional contact with patients, particularly with regard to various diagnostic studies. Sits, stands and walks intermittently during working day. Subject to pressures to produce diagnostic reports on routine and emergency basis and to give professional opinion when requested to do so by professional colleagues. Cases of MRI, Nuclear medicine, mammography and DVI must be supervised and verified by a radiologist (i.e.) Senior Registrar/Consultant privileged to perform such cases by fulfilling the job description criteria for the specialty.

ADDITIONAL EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE All radiologists performing interventional procedures must meet one of the following criteria. Qualified radiologists not qualified in the field may participate in the performance of interventional procedures under the strict guidance of a qualified radiologist. (i.e. meeting the required criteria) who remains in the procedure room during the whole examination.

The radiologist shall have the responsibility for all aspects of the study including but not limited to reviewing indications for the examination, making sure pre-procedural requirements have been fulfilled, specifying the type and dosage of contrast agent to be used. Interpreting images, generating written reports and assuring the quality of both the images and interpretation.

Criteria : The radiologists privileged to carryout interventional vascular & body procedures (assuming all responsibilities for such cases) must meet the following requirements Certification in Radiology by the Saudi Board of Radiology or equivalents that are recognized & approved by the Saudi Council for Health Specialties (SCHS) with additional 1-year training at an institution recognized by the SCHS for training in interventional procedures OR Radiologist assuming responsibilities for interventional vascular & body procedures limited to a specific anatomic area (e.g. central nervous system) must meet the following qualifications. 90-hours CME credit in interventional procedures specific to the particular specialty area with documented experience in a minimum of 150 examinations that were performed or supervised and interpreted within the last 36 months.

ADDITIONAL EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE All radiologists performing MRI procedures must meet one of the following criteria. Qualified radiologists not qualified in the field may participate in the performance of MRI procedures under the strict guidance of a qualified radiologist. (i.e. meeting the required criteria).

The radiologists assuming these responsibilities for MR imaging inclusive of all anatomical areas must meet at least one of the following criteria’s:

Criteria - 1: Certification in Radiology by the Saudi Board of Radiology or other equivalents that are recognized and approved the Saudi Council for Health Specialties (SCHS) OR Qualifications also may be fulfilled by radiologists who completed residency training prior to formal training in MRI became available. Such individuals shall have completed residency training prior to 1985 and have been involved with the performance and interpretation of at least 500 MRI examinations within the last 36-months OR 6-months documented training in cross-sectional body imaging to include at least 3-months documented training in Computed Tomography (CT) or 1-year documented experience in cross-sectional body imaging including body CT, as well as interpretation and reporting of these examinations. In addition to the above, 6-months documented training in Neuroradiology, 3-months documented training in Nuclear Radiology & 6-Months documented training in Musculoskeletal Radiology. In addition, the radiologists choosing one of the above criteria shall have at least 120-hours of either supervised experience by a person who meets (is qualified by) one of the above criteria in MRI clinical applications, physics, safety and instrumentation or of documental training.

Criteria - 2: Radiologists assuming these responsibilities for MR imaging limited to a specific anatomic area (i.e. central nervous system or bone and joint) must meet the following qualifications: 90-hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) in MRI instruction specific to the particular specialty area to include aspects of MRI clinical applications, physics and safety with documented MRI experience in the particular specialty area including a minimum of 500 MRI examinations that were performed or supervised and interpreted within the last 36- months.

Note: The following guideline for Continuing Medical Education (CME) is strongly recommended. SCfHS continuing education should include CME in MRI as is appropriate to an individual’s practice needs.

ADDITIONAL EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE All radiologists performing nuclear medicine procedures must meet one of the following criteria. Qualified radiologists not qualified in the field may participate in the performance of nuclear medicine procedures under the strict guidance of a qualified radiologist. (i.e. meeting the required criteria) who remains in the procedure room during the whole examination.

Must be holding Certification in Radiology by the Saudi Board of Radiology or other equivalents that are recognized and approved by the Saudi Council for Health Specialties (SCHS) with 6-months straight training in Nuclear Medicine specialty at a centre recognized by SCHS. Have current Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, if monitoring cardiac stress studies. Read an average of 45-Scintigrams per month averaged over previous 24- months. Must satisfy all applicable and documented health regulations that pertain to the in vivo use of radiopharmaceuticals and performance of imaging procedures. Obtain continuing medical education (CME) over a 3-year period in accordance with the Saudi Council for Health Specialties (SCHS) standard on CME. Should include 30-hours CME in Nuclear Medicine in the last three years.

Interpreting Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Radiologists [initial experience]: Same qualifications as those for interpreting nuclear medicine radiologists and 20-hours continuing medical education (CME) in PET imaging. In the past three years, at least 20 cardiac PET exams must be interpreted or multi-read as well as at least 50 brain PET exams must be interpreted or multi-read. If interpreting oncologic PET exams, at least 80- studies must be interpreted or multi-read. For those interpreting brain & oncologic PET exams, interpretation must include direct image correlation with CT or MRI. Teaching cases are acceptable with documented interpretation.

ADDITIONAL EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE All radiologists performing and/or reading any procedures related to the breast must meet one of the following criteria. Non-qualified radiologists may participate in the performance of the procedures under strict guidance of a qualified radiologist (i.e. meeting the required criteria) who remains in the room during the whole examination.

Mammography Examinations: Screening & diagnostic mammographic images may only be interpreted by a qualified radiologists (i.e.) Radiologists holding a certificate in radiology recognized by SCHS with additional 6-months straight training in mammography at an institute recognized by SCHS. Radiologists not qualified in the field may participate in the performance of mammographic procedures under the strict guidance of a qualified radiologist. (i.e. meeting the required criteria).

Following initial qualifications, the radiologist should maintain competence by regular interpretation and performance of screening & diagnostic mammographic examinations. A minimum of 300-mammograms per year is recommended. Continuing qualification may also be established if results of monitoring and evaluation indicate acceptable technical success, accuracy of interpretation and appropriateness. The radiologist should obtain Continuing Medical Education (CME) over a 3-year period in accordance with the Saudi Council for Health Specialties (SCHS) standard on CME. This should include CME in the field as appropriate to his/her practice.

Breast Ultrasound: May only be performed and interpreted by a radiologist holding a certificate recognized and approved by Saudi Council for Health Specialties (SCHS), this certificate must meet one of the following requirements: Completion of an approved residency program that includes three months of training with supervision by qualified individuals, involvement with 500 ultrasound examinations encompassing a broad spectrum of uses, including breast ultrasound. In addition, the radiologist should have successfully passed written and oral board certification examinations including sections pertaining to diagnostic ultrasound OR If residency training did not include ultrasound, appropriate fellowship or postgraduate training during which the radiologist should have been involved with performance and interpretation of at least 500 ultrasound examinations encompassing a broad spectrum of ultrasound uses including breast ultrasound. This should be under the direct supervision of a qualified radiologist OR Radiologists completing training prior to 1985 must have performed and interpreted ultrasound examinations for at least 10-years including breast ultrasound. Radiologists must have experience in generating film or other hardcopy records for studies performed along with written reports, which have been retained according to hospital policy and consistent with hospital policy and Saudi Council for Health Specialty laws OR In the absence of formal fellowship or postgraduate training, documentation of clinical experience could be acceptable if the following can be demonstrated, i.e. Two years of

Generation of film, videotape or other hardcopy records for studies performed. (Quality improvement projects should be undertaken and documented to continuously improve patient care).

Breast Intervention (i.e. Biopsies): The radiologist must meet the requirements for screening and diagnostic mammography and performing & interpreting diagnostic ultrasound examinations. These radiologists should have thorough understanding of the indications for breast intervention as well as familiarity with the basic physical principles and limitations of the instrumentation and techniques of the procedures.

Training should include sufficient experience in breast intervention procedures including indications for these procedures, knowledge of complications that might be incurred and techniques for successful completion of these procedures. Radiologists should be capable of correlating results of different imaging modalities carried out on the breast (e.g. MRI, Ultrasound & Mammogram). These radiologists should provide evidence of training and requisite competence by meeting the following criteria: The radiologist must have performed and recorded of at least 30 successful (i.e. in the case of biopsy, a diagnostic result was achieve), breast biopsy in each of ultrasound and x-ray imaging modalities and documented 10-hours of CME in the field OR At least 50 successful (i.e. in the case of biopsy a diagnostic result was achieved), breast biopsy procedures in each of ultrasound and x-ray imaging modalities under the guidance of a qualified radiologist through the whole procedure and documented 10-hours of CME credits per year in the field.

Maintenance of competence in the performance of breast interventional procedures requires continuing clinical activity including documented performance of at least 12 percutaneous breast biopsy procedures per year along with the standard CME credits required by the SCHS over a 3-year period.

Position patients in a caring inoffensive manner and immobilize if necessary by the appropriate means (e.g. sand bags foam pads and bucky binders). In females of child bearing age check if there is any chance of pregnancy and take appropriate action if answer is ‘yes’. DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES Maintains the day-to-day operation of the PACS/RIS equipment, which includes image workflow, archiving, auto-routing, prefetching and other related activities. Work closely with unit operation managers/engineers to ensure timely and complete capture of DICOM digital image data information into the PACS/RIS system as well as network transmission. Investigates and identifies problems with system from clinical operational areas and contacts necessary people to solve problems. Work with department staff to identify and design future needs and an efficient workflow process. Attends and participates in departmental/hospital seminars and training sessions necessary to maintain the competence of staff working with the system. Prepares reports on status of system as and when instructed.

Having knowledge in office automated systems (i.e. Windows 2000/xp) and with a relational database like UNIX, Sybase, etc is preferable.
