Job Context

This post sits within the William Harvey Research Institute (WHRI) Bart’s and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, part of Queen Mary, University of London. The WHRI has three core strategic themes: Inflammation, Cardiovascular and Endocrinology with a mix of basic scientists and clinicians benefitting from strong links with Bart’s and The London NHS Trust.

Funded by the BHF, the postholder’s main role will be to co-ordinate and drive a research project to identify the physiological endothelin-converting enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of endothelin-1. The project involves cell culture, use of ELISA, western blotting and protein purification/characterisation techniques, application of siRNA technology and mRNA measurements by qRT-PCR.

Job Purpose

A post-doc position is available to carry out the work described above and will include:

1. Planning and carrying out experimental work, devising strategies for further development and advancement of the project, and he/she will be involved in compiling the data, and writing manuscripts. 2. Contributing to the overall scientific endeavour of the research team and to take responsibility for areas of the current project. 3. Involved in defining and validating a drug target for enzyme inhibitor development. 4. Working as part of the research team, being mutually supportive and covering duties as necessary during colleagues’ absences and at times of additional pressure, as directed.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

General Duties

1. Execute experiments in an accurate and reliable way. 2. Collect and analyse data. 3. Maintain appropriate databases, keeping accurate written and computerised records and to ensure that these records are stored in a secure place. To maintain confidentially of all electronically stored personal data in line with the provisions of the Data Protection Act. 4. Make research initiatives and original contributions to the research programme wherever possible, and to contribute freely to the team research environment in a manner conducive to the success of the research project as a whole. 5. Prepare reports and scientific publications to disseminate results from the programme of research. 6. Attend and participate in the academic activities of the Centre for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics, e.g. laboratory and journal club meetings. 7. Undertake literature searches to explore potential research projects, and to be able to interpret and present the findings of the literature searches and advise the research team appropriately regarding potential projects. 8. Supervise and train where necessary new members of the research team. 9. Ensure that the research project complies with ethics regulations. 10. Assist in drafting budgets and applications for potential research projects and grants. 11. Keep up to date with scientific, clinical and professional issues, in particular developments in the specific subject area. 12. Undertake certain communal laboratory responsibilities (including washing and cleaning duties), the nature of which will be discussed and agreed prior to commencement of the post, but which may need to be changed from time to time during the course of the project. 13. Show a professional attitude to matters of laboratory hygiene, organisation and safety, and to observe and to take an active role in fulfilling all statutory health and safety regulations.

Ensure they are fully aware of and comply with the University’s policies and procedures in relation to confidentiality, health and safety at work, COSHH regulations, infection control, safe handling of drugs, and all local safety rules regarding fire, chemical, radioisotope and gene manipulation hazards. 3. Qualifications Graduate in relevant biological sciences (minimum upper E second class honours degree). PhD in biochemistry, cell biology, pharmacology, or a E related scientific area.

Experience Experience of cell culture. E

Familiarity of immunoassay using ELISA methods. D

Experience of protein purification techniques, and protein D target identification by proteomic methods, and western blot characterisation/identification of proteins.

Experience of general molecular biology techniques (e.g. D mRNA purification, quantitative RT-PCR), and application of siRNA technology for confirmation of protein function.

Demonstration of scientific ability and excellence by D means of authorship (first author) peer reviewed publications in internationally recognised scientific journals.
