Request for a Course to Fulfill the Religion Perspective

Note regarding General Education Requirements In order to have a course designated to fulfill one or more General Education requirement, instructors must submit a syllabus (or full course description) along with a Request Form for each requirement, indicating how the course addresses the guidelines passed by the faculty. No course may satisfy more than two General Education requirements. Perspective course instructors are encouraged to incorporate Convocations and other experiences when these are pertinent to the subject of study.

Religion Perspective Description The Religion Perspective is intended to help students develop an understanding and appreciation of the role of religion in human experience through the study of one or more major religious traditions, institutions, or ideas.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of any course that meets the Religion Perspective, a successful student will understand: 1. religion as a mode of response to, and as a system of beliefs and practices derived from an interaction with divine or ultimate reality; 2. religion as a way of addressing fundamental questions about human nature and experience; 3. how religion is expressed in art, ritual, myth, or texts; 4. relationships of religious beliefs and practices to ethical teachings, practices, or issues. ______Request for a Course to Fulfill the Religion Perspective

Guidelines for Approving Courses for the Religion Perspective Religion Perspective courses should address the student learning outcomes listed above and must:

1. examine one or more major religious traditions, institutions, practices, ideas, or experiences as an integral part of the course;

2. engage reflection on the way particular artifacts, institutions, practices, or ideas exemplify an understanding of a religion and of religion;

3. clearly address skills and habits of mind listed in the Aims for General Education.
