Sub: Provision of Virtual Private Network(VPN) facility to Official telephone numbers of Circle Office/ Regional office/ GM Finanace & DA(P)/Chennai City Postal & RMS divisions/Units - reg. Ref: This office letter of even no. dated 29.1.07
In continuation of this office letter cited, the following further instructions are issued for using the facility of VPN services.
2. The facility of Virtual Private Network (VPN) has been formed comprising all office telephone numbers of O/o Chief Postmaster General, Postmaster General, Chennai City Region, General Manager (Finance &Accounts), Director (Foreign Post) and all other Postal/RMS Division and units come under the control of Circle office and Regional office, but in Chennai Telephones District.
3. The salient features of the scheme and procedure for using the VPN Services are given below.
3.1 All the office telephone numbers (449 telephone numbers) Chennai City Postal administrative/ Operative Offices are grouped under a separate Intelligent Net work (IN Platform) and the facility of Virtual Private Network (VPN) has been provided and activated with effect from 01-02-2007.
3.2 The telephone numbers have been divided into two groups namely OCB Type Telephone Exchange (254 telephone numbers) and Non-OCB Type Telephone Exchange (195 telephone numbers). The list of telephone numbers (in ascending order) of OCB Type and Non OCB Type are given separately in Annexure I and II.
3.3 Each telephone number of the Net work has been assigned with a separate four digit VPN code for the purpose of inter dialing within the Net work.
3.4 The procedure for dialing other telephone numbers under the VPN group for OCB Type and Non OCB Type are given in Annexure III and IV.
3.5 For calling telephone numbers other than in VPN group
Member of OCB Type telephone exchange is to dial the escape code ‘0’ followed by the desired telephone number. One need not wait for any tone after dialing 0. They can continue dialing like STD dialing.

Member of Non OCB Type telephone exchange can dial any destination number directly.
3.6 For the purpose of incoming calls, your telephone number will remain unchanged. Otherwise Person from out of network (VPN) can dial the telephone number without any change.
4. The services of VPN facility may be utilized effectively to contact all the telephone numbers under the net work since there will be no charges for the calls made within the network irrespective of number of calls and duration.
5. In case of doubt or clarification in availing the facility of VPN services, you may contact telephone number 2821 5763 or 2821 5764 of BSNL.
6. Copy of this letter and Annexure I to IV are available in the website www.tamilnadupost.nic.in \vpn.htm of our Circle. You are requested to fill up the name and designation pertaining to your division/office indicating the serial number of the Annexure III or Annexure IV and e-mail the same to [email protected].
