Compliance With COEN Shop Rules Each person using the COEN Student Shop must acknowledge that use of the shop and its tools, storage, and work spaces is a privilege contingent upon compliance to the letter and spirit of the following rules and procedures. Failure to comply with these rules and procedures will result in loss of shop access. Access Rules for COEN Student Shop  Only students with a declared major in Boise State Engineering or COEN faculty and staff are eligible to use the student shop.  Before using the shop, users must take the safety tour, complete safety training and pass the safety exam. Upon completing these steps, users will be granted electronic access. Use of COEN Student Shop  Students may only use the student shop when a Shop Supervisor is present. Faculty and staff may use the shop only when there is another person in the shop.  All shop users must sign in before working in shop. By signing in, users agree to comply with shop rules.  All students must discuss with the Shop Supervisor the proposed work, the tools they expect to use, and address any questions or concerns they may have. Remember, supervisors are here to help you.  Students may only work on school-related project work in the Student Shop.  Senior projects have first priority; class projects have second priority; club projects have third priority; all others are fourth priority. Consult a Shop Supervisor if you have an issue with access to a machine or tool. Injuries and Emergencies  To Report an emergency situation, call 911. There is a phone located on the East wall near the entrance of the shop.  All injuries, no matter how minor, must immediately be reported to a Shop Supervisor.  All chemical spills, no matter what the material, or how minor, must immediately be reported to a Shop Supervisor. Basic Safety  Safety glasses are required at all times in the shop.  All students will wear appropriate clothing for the work that they are doing. Shorts, open-toed shoes and excessively loose clothing are not allowed in the shop.  Jewelry (necklaces, rings, bracelets, watches, etc.) must be removed while in the shop.  Long hair must be tied back and tucked under shirt or in a hair net before entering the shop.  No food is allowed in the shop.  Food containers (soft drink cans, water bottles, food boxes, etc.) may not be used to store any materials that could be ingested by mistake.

5/11/2018  If you see any unsafe practices taking place in the shop, do your best to rectify the situation immediately, then report it to a Supervisor  Any equipment damaged or found to be defective must immediately be reported to Shop Supervisor so that it can be tagged and taken out of service. Clean-up  Make sure your work areas are clean after use. Wipe down the tool and sweep up any chips and debris. Leave the area for the next user like you would want it left for you.  Do not leave project materials in the shop.  Clean and return all tools to their proper location when not in use.  Failure to clean up after use may result in revoked shop privileges. Chemicals  The College of Engineering Safety Liaison, Chris Siepert, will oversee chemical purchases and waste disposal for the Student Shop. Contact Chris at 426-3913, [email protected] or ENGR 332.  Review with the safety liaison any chemical requests before you purchase them for the shop.  Label all containers clearly as to their contents. If mixed, list all materials in the mix. Special use chemicals should show contact information for the person and project it is used for and the reason for use.  Contact the safety liaison if you have chemicals you would like to have disposed. Individuals that dispose of hazardous materials inappropriately will be banned from using the Student Shop. The violation will be reported to the Department (advisor, instructor and/or Dean) and to the Boise State Environmental Health, Safety and Sustainability department. Manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)  MSDSs are available for all chemicals used in the student shop.  All students must read and understand the MSDS’s for the chemicals/materials they use. Tools and Materials  The Student Shop does not supply materials.  If there is a tool that is broken, missing, not working well, or one you think the shop needs, make a note on the Tool clipboard with your contact info.  Any abuse of tools observed must immediately be reported to a Shop Supervisor.  Any individual that exhibits a pattern of safety or procedure violations will be banned from use of the facility and reported to the department (advisor, instructor and/or Dean).
