Number 7 7th March 2012 Term 1 From the Principals Desk

I would like to congratulate some past students. Virginia Jeremy and Brodie Willcocks were recently invested as Prefects at Maryborough State High and Mallory Booth was invested as a School Leader at Aldridge State High. I had the great please in teaching these students in my first year at Bauple. They have made their families and their primary school very proud of their achievements. Every year is dedicated to an idea or concept; over the past years we have celebrated the Year of Creativity, Year of the Outback etc. This year we celebrate the Year of Reading. Inspire your child with the love of reading

With 2012 declared the National Year of Reading, now is the perfect time to give your child a gift that will last a lifetime — a love of reading. The Queensland Department of Education and Training is supporting the National Year of Reading to help emphasise the importance of literacy skills, increasing the number of children reading books and promoting the role of libraries. Our school will take part in some of the activities which will be held throughout the year to help inspire a new generation of readers and remind all Queenslanders that it’s never too late to learn to read and — just as importantly — learn to love it. Visit the department’s National Year of Reading website at http://deta.qld.gov.au/year-of-reading for further information. Last year, we were fortunate to have two volunteers from the Ready Readers Program. This year we would love to have parents participate in this program. It is 2 hours of training with one of our teachers. You are not obligated to work in our school however you have extra skills to support your child/ren at home. Watch this space for the day and date. This is open to all parents in all year levels.

Parent Interviews Parent Interviews begin Week 9 (19th March-23rd March). Teachers will contact you via an interview sheet that will be sent home. Please complete and return. If you cannot attend a face to face interview, teachers can conduct a phone interview. Parents may ask for other times if they are not indicated on the interview sheet; please send a note to your class teacher or contact the office. Mr Brandseth will be available to speak with parents of our SWD students. Please indicate if you have time to speak with him on the same day, before or after, or at the same time with the classroom teacher.

Easter School Holidays This year the Easter School Holidays have changed. The last day of Term 1 is 30th March (Friday) and school will commence Monday 16th April. Students and staff will have 2 weeks off with Easter held in the middle. There is NO PUPIL FREE DAY. Easter Public Holidays are 6th to 9th April.

Easter Bonnet Parade Wednesday 28th March. All parents and families are welcome to come along, commencing at 9am.

Get involved in our P&C Getting involved with a Parents & Citizens Association (P&C) can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience, but many people may be unsure of how it works. If you’ve never been involved in a P&C before, the Quick Guide for P&C Executive Officers is a great way to get familiar with what they do, and how you can help out. The guide sets out the roles and responsibilities of members in an easy- to-read format. The Quick Guide for P&C Executive Officers has been produced by the Queensland Council of Parents’ and Citizens’ Associations and Education Queensland and is available for download from the Department of Education and Training website at http://education.qld.gov.au/parents/pdf/quickguide-pc-executiveofficers.pdf “It's better to look ahead and prepare than to look back and regret.” -- Jacki Joyner-Kersee, Athlete

In The Classroom P-2 NEWS This week has been a wet one! We hope you and your homes have been staying dry and safe. We will be trying to catch up on curriculum learning, sharing times and other missed activities during the remainder of the week. Students should still attempt to complete their spelling word homework and mathematic work as this will consolidate topics covered in the classroom. If you have concerns or would like to have homework folders over the weekend, ask me or have your child ask to take their folder home on Friday. Thanks for your support!

It was pleasing to hear a student make the connection that he and his brother were both learning about persuasive writing at the moment. This was a topic shared at home and it was great to hear children talking to each other and to parents about classroom learning. Ask your child if they know what persuade means (to try to get somebody to do or believe what you want them to). Have them tell you about what Farmer Brown’s cows, hens and ducks wanted Farmer Brown to do in the story “Click Clack Moo” (electric blankets). We will be starting our second story “I Wanna Iguana”. Ask your child to tell you about how the character tried to convince their mother to buy them an iguana. These are books read and discussed during class lessons so it is hoped that children are able to describe and explain these to you at home. Enjoy the rest of the week! Jess Chin

3 – 7 NEWS Well, a bit of a late start this week due to the floods. It is great to see all students safely back at school after the unexpected long weekend. In maths this week we are looking at chance and probability. We are coming towards the final assessment for our science units and continuing to learn about persuasion in English. Training for cross country has begun and will continue until the Bauple Cross Country on 20th March.
