Role Description: Trusts and Statutory Fundraising Intern (ITN)

About our internship scheme Interns at the British Red Cross are highly valued for the skills and energy they bring to our work. We hope to provide our interns with an insight into the daily internal workings of the world’s largest humanitarian organisation. The successful candidate will have access to relevant in-house training and development opportunities during the course of their placement. There also may be ad hoc opportunities to get involved in other areas of work where appropriate.

Your role as an intern will help make a great contribution to the work of the British Red Cross. You will get involved in a specific project for a set length of time within one of the various departments across the UK. As you are recruited to support or complete a particular piece of work, you will have a real responsibility and place in the department, bringing some of your skills and experience to the role; you will also have the chance to develop workplace skills.

About this role This exciting internship opportunity has arisen within the Trusts & Statutory team, which raises money from UK based organisations such as charitable trusts and the government. The team’s income targets are ambitious at approximately £7m in 2013 and the role of com- mitted interns within the team is to increase our opportunities of exceeding this target.

It will provide an effective means of developing Trust & Statutory fundraising skills for someone with no previous direct fundraising experience or who wishes to develop them. The intern will gain technical knowledge via training, develop Trust & Statutory fundraising skills by working as a fundraiser and being supported and mentored by more experienced colleagues. We are seeking an intern to work with us for 3-4 days a week for a minimum of eight weeks – max 12 weeks. This position is unpaid, but lunch & travel expenses will be provided.

The intern’s technical knowledge will be developed via formal training in this area: ‘Introduction to Trust/Statutory Fundraising’. This will be combined with supported direct experience so that they will have the ability to manage mini projects, carry out research into potential donors and support the submission of funding applications.

Hours This internship will last between 8-12 weeks, working a 3-4 days each week. This may be negotiable and can be agreed between the intern and line manager.

Tasks include

> To undertake qualitative research to identify Charitable Trusts and statutory bodies with the potential to support Red Cross, including by at times phone contact > To support Fundraising Officers in the development of effective appeals aimed at Trusts, and Statutory bodies so as to raise income for Red Cross work in the UK and overseas > To assist with the mailing programme to donors that regularly make grants to the British Red Cross > To provide timely feedback and reports to donors (under the direction of experienced colleagues), including creation and delivery of thank you messages by mail and phone > To access and update the fundraising database as per agreed guidelines

> To uphold the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and to work within the British Red Cross’ Equal Opportunities Policy > To report regularly to the colleague who is mentoring and supporting their work What we are looking for You need to have good interpersonal, diplomacy, communication and teamwork skills although full training can be given for any technical requirements. > Demonstrable interest in fundraising > Experience of writing effectively and concisely > Computer literate > Numerical skills > Analytical skills > Fluent in written & spoken English

> Flexible and able to prioritise workload > Resident in UK or planning to be before the Society can consider an application

An individual risk assessment, parental consent and safeguarding considerations will be required for those aged 15 – 17. The nature of the activities specific to your intern opportunity may mean that you need to be 18 years or older.
