Unit V- Origins & development of authoritarian & single-party states: Joseph Stalin

The 20th century produced many authoritarian and single-party states. In this Unit we will focus on our second dictator of the course: Joseph Stalin. We will focus on the origins of his authoritarian control over the Soviet Union, the development of the Communist state, the manifestations of his ideology, and the nature and impact of his rule in the USSR and throughout the world. (IBO)1 Students will be required to complete readings from a variety of texts in order to compare historical perspectives and will ultimately create a “formula” for describing how Stalin came to power, maintained that power, and to analzye the consequences of his leadership.
