Research Short Story Unit 2015

You will be reading three excellent from around the world during Research Conferences. Some activities you will do individually (I expect ORIGINAL WORK) and some you will do with your classmates. Read the first three stories in this order:

Story #1: “The Second Voyage of Sindbad” from The Thousand and One Nights INDEPENDENT Activities:  Read and annotate introduction and story (5)  Thoroughly complete Study Guide questions (10) PARTNER (2 people total) Activities:  Write the “3rd Voyage of Sindbad” story – pretend you are Scheherazade and need to keep the sultan’s interest for one more night….include: 3 instances of hyperbole, 3 instances of verisimilitude, a cliffhanger ending, and 10 vocabulary words. Highlight hyperbole and verisimilitude and put an “H” or “V” in the margin; underline vocab words (20). Use the Alphasmarts or Chromebooks.  Create list or flashcards for 15 vocab words – learn them together! TURN-IN ORDER (top to bottom): annotated story, study guide, 3rd voyage story (don’t forget names) Total Points: 35

Story #2: “The Handsomest Drowned Man” by Gabriel Garcia-Marquez INDEPENDENT Activities:  Read and annotate introduction and story (5)  Thoroughly complete Study Guide questions (15) GROUP OF 4 (no more) Activities (group members must be different than your Sindbad partner):  Create list or flashcards for 15 vocab words – learn them together!  Photo Essay (use your phones or other camera device): using costumes, depict the themes of this story in a 6 – 8 frame tableaux. Each group member must be in 3 frames minimum. Include each main group from the story: men, women, children, Esteban. Print the photos at home, mount nicely on construction paper provided and provide captions (don’t forget your names) (15). TURN-IN ORDER (top to bottom): annotated story, study guide (name!); group tableaux separate. Total Points: 35

Story #3: “Don Quixote excerpt” by Miguel Cervantes INDEPENDENT Activities:  Read and annotate introduction and story (5)  Thoroughly complete Study Guide questions (15)  Writing: chivalry code, humor, or contrast paragraph (10) PARTNER (2 people total) Activity (new partner – can’t have worked together yet):  create list or flashcards for 15 vocab words – learn them together!  NICELY illustrate Don Quixote and Sancho Panza with a great quote for each (5) TURN-IN ORDER (top to bottom): annotated story, study guide, illustrations, writing (name…) Total Points: 35

3 STORY UNIT TEST: 45 point scantron format on these three stories, including author background and vocabulary words (45 words total): ______. Total unit points: 150
