The Members of the CHASA Board. 10 March 2011

BASA has obtained certain hunting privileges at BAR TREK Ranch in the southern part of Botswana near Tsabong. The ranch is game fenced, 16 000ha in size (aprox 20km x 8km) and has a standing game population exceeding 3000 head.

As part of our commitment we have been allocated 12 weeks through the season and a quota of about 400 head of game must be removed. The late finalisation of the arrangements has resulted in an under-subscription by our members and we are offering the extra dates to CHASA. The fundamental fair principle will be first come first served, but our overriding obligation is to manage to take the quota so applicants demonstrating a greater likelihood to hunt well and in reasonable numbers may be given preference at our discretion.

Below you will find the price list, general rules and a quota list. Due to the vagaries of hunting we will not dictate exact quotas per species per group as such, but an average per group as a general guiding principle will be applied and as the season progresses we will monitor & inform the booked parties.

Meat can be brought out under the usual permits (up to 500kg meat & 100kg biltong/hunter) and skins, capes & horns may also be brought out under similar permit. Firearms can be taken in/out at all borders, but meat can only come out at borders where the SA authorities have a veterinary inspector. Lobatse is the usual, but there is a strong possibility that the state vet in Kuruman will meet exiting hunters at Mc Carthy’s Rest by pre arranged appointment for those travelling from the south. The BASA office & Bar Trek management will provide further assistance & info to booked parties.

The farm is Kalahari style sand dunes, well grassed (exceptional rains this season) with good cover & trees and is exceptional walk & stalk hunting. There is a good meat room, a small general chiller and a 12m reefer (which has a separate running fee but will only require a few hours/day and only in the hotter times) The staff are very professional in tracking, skinning and meat processing and are very pleasant.

Although there is a hunting vehicle available it is impractical to hunt Bar Trek without your own means. The place is huge and your group is spread far. The quota requires an estimated six head of game to be taken per hunting day so groups should ideally number 6 – 10 hunters and have at least 2 own vehicles for hunting. The campsite has adequate wash-up, clean water, a flushing toilet & donkey shower. Own tents and equipment required. There is the possibility of staying in bungalows of absent shareholders for those averse to camping. There is a good landing strip.
