It looks at attention seeking, and defiance, refusal and resistance from students constantly in power struggles with teachers. The presentation also looks at those students who constantly need teacher help and those who are really harming the learning environment, others and themselves. The program explores the reasons why students misbehave, examines why many current approaches may not work and provides highly effective, and often simple preventative school and classroom strategies.

Student Resources Impacting Learning - Amanda Wicks This session is based on A Framework for Understanding Poverty and outlines key actions to support students with limited resources. These actions provide teachers with strategies and tools to implement quickly to increase success for students. Participants will analyse the resources of students to identify interventions to support students’ development of resources that may be missing or weak.

Session 2 - Workshop Outlines Number Facts and Fun – Rob Proffitt-White What number facts should children know? What is the best way to engage students? What methods are available to build new facts from existing facts? A look at what teachers from many regions are observing.

Reading is thinking: the explicit teaching of comprehension matters (P-7) – Melissa Ibbs Explore a range of targeted strategies to develop students reading and comprehension skills. Participants will explore QAR and practical strategies to improve students’ reading success.

Catering for Special Needs (ASD) in the Classroom (P-12) – Michelle Aitcheson This presentation is an A-Z approach to understanding and differentiating for Students with Disabilities (SWD). It explores practical aspects that are specific to working with students who require specific adjustments to the curriculum to maximise their learning outcomes. Issues of Assessment, Behaviour, Curriculum plans and Expectations will be shared with practical strategies to assist teachers in working effectively with SWD. How to give effective feedback on drafts (5-12) – Sean Loriaux Practical strategies to encourage higher-order thinking through the drafting process in all subject areas in Primary and Secondary.

Session 3 - Workshop Outlines Consolidating Number Concepts – Rob Profitt-White Through activities, the key ideas behind number concepts in the Australian Curriculum will be demonstrated.

Get a Life Time Management for Teachers – Jo Lange Jo has great insights into the demands of teachers and has a range of strategies to create work/life balance. The workshop will focus on practical strategies to run the marathon of the school year without burnout!

Vocal Health (P-12) – Louise Field This session, delivered by a voice specialist, is designed to arm teachers with both proactive and reactive tips to improve vocal health problems specific to teaching.

Session 4 - Workshop Outlines

Building number and place value fluency through games (P-7) Peter Carmichael and Jenny Carmichael Play, evaluate and modify fun card games and dice activities that help develop number concepts in the primary school. What links can be made to the Australian Curriculum? This workshop is a balance of theory and practice. Explore what numeracy is, make links with current practice and then have fun with simple games and activities that engage learners from years 3-7 to develop their confidence using and discussing mathematics.

ICT’s in the Classroom (P-12) – Mitch Fallon A practical session that looks at barriers and effective methods for using technology to create engaging learning experiences.

Practical Strategies for an Outstanding Junior Secondary Classroom (7-9) Sam Pidgeon Participants will be guided through a reflection process which will challenge them to consider the characteristics of Junior Secondary learners and the strategies that can lead to improved outcomes for these kids. These strategies focus on building relationships with students and can be used across the curriculum. Sam is are also aware that the knowledge is often in the room – so participants will be invited to share with their colleagues what has been working for them so far. The session will be fun, interactive and will without doubt send participants away with something they can use immediately upon returning to school. Come and play!

Visible Learning – Using Bloom’s Taxonomy in Lesson Planning (5-12) – Sean Loriaux This session will help teachers develop their use of Bloom’s Taxonomy in lesson planning to help differentiate in lessons, and explore different ways of helping students engage with the lesson’s focus.
