'2.1.1Michael 5/18/2008 1:45:18 PM Berkeley Heights, NJ My title is Applications Services Analyst. I work IT in an organization called Enterprise Collaboration and Content Management. Personally I contribute to the Content Management solutions for my company. For a pharma, content management is key due to the huge regulatory aspects of our industry. I design and support integrations between other applications and our CM platform. I have been a member of IEEE for 10 years and joined in college. I am a member of the Northern NJ Section and the Computer Society.

My position is in the engineering response team, where most of my work is provided to support operations and maintenance activities on an emergent schedule. I prepare design packages for system and equipment upgrades and repairs, as well as maintain drawings, calculations, and other station design records.

I have been an IEEE member since 2005. I am a member of the Power an Energy Society and Control Systems Society.

'2.2.1Michael 5/18/2008 1:46:26 PM I took two of the classes for my Masters in Engineering through the IEEE program with the Stevens Institute of Tech WebCampus program. I don't recall exactly what classes this was as it was a few years ago. The classes were online.

Courses I took through the program were 1) Project Management for Complex Systems 2) Robust Engineering 3) System Architecture 4) Intro to System Engineering amongst other courses. These courses were offered both online and on campus. I choose to take the courses online.

'2.2.8Jonathan 5/19/2008 1:03:29 PM I am currently enrolled at Drexel University in the Masters of Engineering program in electrical engineering. The program consists of 15 courses overall. I have taken 8 total (including one currently). The program is an online program, however certain courses allow the online students to participate on campus in a traditional classroom setting. I have taken several classes on power systems, system analysis and modeling, and engineering management and law.

'2.3 Robin - Moderator 5/15/2008 3:00:57 PM When you are looking for a particular program or area in which you want to acquire knowledge or skills and you do not have a particular resource in mind, where do you start your search? How do you go about finding what you need?

'2.3.1Michael 5/18/2008 1:48:05 PM I'm generally going to start with the resources that our Company has partnered with to provide training since we are required to use those first. When it came to picking a place to take my Masters, since I was completing it while working full time I needed some place close by. Online learning hadn't really come into it's own yet. Also, I did my

5 undergraduate at Stevens so I was comfortable with it.

'2.3.3Ankur 5/18/2008 7:18:47 PM When i was in 8th standard, my father is inspired about engg. field. then i joined Technical school. At that juncture, i was come across so many new Technologies. so I decided to Go about Communcation line particularly Satellite Communication. I did my Undergrad in Electronics and communication. now i Want to go further in Satellite communication. so i check the course list of major universities and i found Stevens had this kind of major.

But when i came here, i took course but minimum student requirement is not filled so they just drop down the course. so i diverted my mind to the wireless communication.so here also i found that my college also member of ieee. so i just joined so i can acquire knowledge from ieee. also so many other site which helps in to find about this major.

I know one of the best site is www.google.com anything you find out on this site.

'2.3.8Jonathan 5/19/2008 1:06:43 PM If I know what area I am looking to acquire new knowledge and skills in, I would typically ask collegues who have experience in those areas if they could recommend a resource they have used in the past. Otherwise, I would probably search the internet, starting with a professional society that particular area might fall under.

'2.3.8.1.1 Jonathan 5/24/2008 5:26:58 PM I am not quite sure what you mean my IEEE sources, but if I take that to mean courses supported by the IEEE and taught by external organizations (like the education partners program) then no I do not remember seeing that. I have come across courses/seminars run by the IEEE directly during internet searches.

I have utilizied Yahoo! as a resource of finding local universitites and colleges.

'2.3.11 Robert 5/19/2008 11:20:44 PM I was looking for a MBA program that held online classes so I could be at home and do some of the classes, however it had to be close enough that I could drive there for classes. I was looking for a middle of the road MBA program. I used primarily the web.

'2.3.12 Jeff 5/20/2008 12:13:07 PM I start with a simple search of the internet. I type in a broad description of what I am looking for and narrow down from there. I will then spend a lot of time verifying the accuracy of the information.

'2.4.1Michael 5/18/2008 1:49:12 PM I came across the program by chance after I had started by degree. The Stevens web site included mention of a 10% discount for IEEE members and that certain caught my eye. Other than that, I may never or learned about it. I suspect that is a view shared by many others.

'2.4.7Jessica5/19/2008 12:23:17 PM I did not find out about the program through IEEE. I found out about the program through the graduate school I attended. They had a website that advertised which societies offer discounts to tuition.

'2.4.8Jonathan 5/19/2008 1:08:54 PM The program was pretty well advertised on the IEEE web page, but I know from talking with my colleagues that are IEEE members that not everyone is aware of it. Part of my reason for joining the IEEE was the opportunities available through the education partners program.

'2.4.9Fred L.5/19/2008 3:18:13 PM It has been well publicized. I'm not very actively involved with the IEEE, but I do read the Spectrum and other IEEE news articles. The Education Partners program is almost always promoted.

'2.4.10 Plamen 5/19/2008 7:17:16 PM I would say they don't. I found out about the Education Partners program through an ad on the Graduate Admissions website at my school and that's how I ended up taking advantage of it.

9 Everything is on the web. If people want to know they can search for it. I always know that IEEE has educational programs available to me from the mailings I receive.

'2.4.14 Barbara 5/21/2008 9:48:14 AM During my search for Business Systems Analysis courses, I learned of the IEEE EP program. Honestly, this prompted me to renew my membership with IEEE. I have no opinion regarding other members awareness of the program.

'2.5 Robin - Moderator 5/15/2008 3:00:57 PM How did you first learn about the IEEE Education Partners? Can you describe the path that took you to the program?

'2.5.1Michael 5/18/2008 1:50:17 PM As I said earlier, it was luck. I stumbled across the program while on my school's web site. At that point, I was sure to use it for any classes that were included in the program. I only used it twice since I found that I didn't like online learning and wasn't very successful at it.

'2.5.1.1.1 Michael 5/21/2008 6:16:24 PM The Web Campus classes at Stevens were not/are not very interactive. Essentially, you work from a book and class notes and do homework. I have a hard time learning about new topics from books. I do much better in a classroom setting where I can be walked through something instead of reading the text book. I've always found this to be the fact for me event from when I was a child. If I have to learn a new concept from a book, I have a much harder time with it than if somebody can explain it to me and show me. Also, when the learning is up to me, I have a hard time keeping my attention. When home, I can easily drift off into something else.

'2.5.2David 5/18/2008 2:23:02 PM See last question. I think I went right to the University. I got billed the total amout the first time and had to remind them of the program.

Because of that i came across too many resources and programs, one of them is IEEE Education program in which depending upon courses u took you will get gradution degree as well as discount on courses too.

'2.5.6Shylah 5/19/2008 12:21:39 PM I learned about the EP when I first joined IEEE - think it was mentioned in my welcome letter. I later looked through the website and checked out all the provider's websites and chose Inquestra based on the price and program they offered

'2.5.7Jessica5/19/2008 12:27:19 PM I learned about it through Stevens Inst. of Technology website. Their website had a section that advertises which professional societies are members of providing tuition discount. IEEE was among the professional societies included.

'2.5.8Jonathan 5/19/2008 1:12:12 PM I had been considering joining the IEEE after graduating from undergraduate school and was researching memeber benefits on their web page. Since I was intending on continuing my education while working full time, the education partners program was a big selling point for joining the IEEE. In particular, I knew Drexel has a strong power engineering program, which is an area I am interested in, so I liked that I could get a discounted rate through the IEEE at that school.

'2.5.9Fred L.5/19/2008 3:19:54 PM I had already been enrolled in the Drexel program when I saw an advertisement publicizing the IEEE program. It offered 10% off my tuition. I investigated it, and have enjoyed a 10% reduced tuition ever since.

'2.5.10 Plamen 5/19/2008 7:18:28 PM As mentioned in the previous question, I saw an ad on my school's website for the IEEE Education Partners program. I was looking for course offerings and availability when I stumbled upon it.

11 '2.5.11 Robert 5/19/2008 11:24:26 PM I actually fell into it. I was looking for a program online and I realize by reading the web site that it was a IEEE educational Partner for online classes. This would give me a 10% discount to take classes online. I started then to take classes primarily online.

'2.5.12 Jeff 5/20/2008 12:17:27 PM I learned about the program through Drexel. I stated that I was an IEEE member on my application. I took the Drexel program because it will lead to a Masters of Science and not just an MBA.

'2.5.13 Kunal 5/20/2008 10:08:47 PM I came to know from my university. I was actually looking for courses that were offered online. I came to know from the office of registra that there are IEEE Eduction partners courses available online and there was also some tuition rebate on it.

'2.5.14 Barbara 5/21/2008 9:49:08 AM When I found the BSA certificate course, I saw the partnership program with IEEE. This prompted me to renew my membership with IEEE.

Why did you decide to pursue some continuing education at the time you found IEEE Education Partners?

For example, are you interested in pursuing an advanced degree? Did you need to learn a particular skill for your job? Were you simply interested in the topic? Or something else?

'3.1.1Michael 5/18/2008 1:51:57 PM Continuing education is anything. It can be a one day class, a seminar or a degree program.

I actually decided to pursue my graduate degree before I found the IEEE program. I always had intended to get that degree, but took a few years off after starting work. I did it for myself. Work didn't seem to care either way but the degree in Software Engineering has been invaluable at work since.

'3.1.2David 5/18/2008 2:31:17 PM Masters and Doctoral work in ones chosen profession. Industry recognized certifications.

Was going to do it anyway. This aided on the positive side the decision to do it.

For my own professional development within my job and outside of it also.

'3.1.3Ankur 5/18/2008 7:32:14 PM Now i am graduate on may 22 2008. so i am no more member of IEEE as student. but i will join this program as member. because it give so many information about the latest technology and research papers. so i just want to job so i will know about particular skill then i decided to take ieee program about that.

'3.1.4Fred F.5/18/2008 11:18:54 PM I think continuing education is any formal classes or trainning you take to increase your

12 knowledge. I decided to continue my education because I figured it would help me find a job and there were discounts both from IEEE and my employer.

'3.1.5Shylah 5/19/2008 12:25:47 PM I consider any course to be 'continuing education'. I wanted to learn more about Business Analysis because I was thinking about changing jobs.

'3.1.6Jonathan 5/19/2008 1:15:08 PM I consider continuing education to be any class/seminar/workshop beyond a basic level of training or qualification that one pursues to advance his or her knowledge or skill set in a particular area. In terms of quality of education, I'd have to say that I was frankly a bit disappointed about the way online courses were conducted. My school wanted to expand its reach to students all over the world that started offering courses that are just not suitable to be taught online - I ended up being disadvantaged by taking such courses and would have preferred to have been able to take them on campus.

'3.8.1.1.1 Michael 5/21/2008 6:29:03 PM That isn't surprising. At work I will think something is easy and intuitive but most others can't figure them out. My opinions on application design don't seem to be mainstream.

The biggest flaw in the page is the length of the page. It's a long scroll down to the bottom. The provider information should probably be not presented at once. Instead, some click would bring up a specific provider.

The next layout at the top can be a little hard on the eyes. Too many font sizes, colors, italics, bolds, etc.

Also, the text section appears to be designed for 1024x768 screen resolution while the provider data is designed for 800x600. In today's world, I think a build for 1024x768 is safe, especially for the IEEE's technical audience. That may allow the provider information to be presented more horizontally.

--The quality of the course or courses? Course quality at Drexel is not very consistent and it depends a lot on the Instructor. Often the materials are several years old with errors and typos that haven't been corrected. They are constantly upgrading their WebCT and content delivery methods. This generally results in an improved experience, but not always. I don't get the impression that IEEE has ever audited any of these courses for quality.

If the IEEE would pre-screen programs and provide something like a "Good Housekeeping seal of approval" guarantee, that would definitely be a strong selling point. Being able to share experiences between members is another plus that could distinguish the IEEE program. Currently, there's no

48 real incentive to use the IEEE site as opposed to just Googling what you want and going directly to the providers' sites. That's pretty much where you end up any how. The 10% is a bonus if you choose a school in the program, but I doubt the 10% will be a big factor in the decision.

Basically taking classes online you need a strong textbook with examples. The one thing that a traditional classroom setting has if that you get to here the inflection of the teacher voice plus the real-world life examples that are given.

The classes online must be really organized and the instructor needs to continually remind the students of the work ahead so they can plan for it.
