 This is an event for the whole school organised and run by a particular class or year group (works well as an annual event).

 The pupils select the charity or charities to be supported by the event.

 Pupils organise a programme of activities that will be used to generate money for their selected charities. In order to develop pupils understanding of profit and loss, each activity should: o Involve an initial cost that needs to be covered by income e.g. cost of prizes, hire of equipment, materials or food. o Be the responsibility of a particular group of pupils – they’ll decide the nature of the activity; the organisation; the running and the tidying away!

 The pupils will need to consider how the activities contribute to the over- all structure of the afternoon i.e. is there an interesting mix of activities or are they too similar? Are some activities too expensive?

 Planning & Preparation – pupils should: o Use a spreadsheet to calculate expenditure and estimate the profit/loss for each activity and the event as a whole. o Organise the marketing of the event – publicity and information. o Organise the practical aspects of the event e.g. booking rooms, equipment, timings, jobs & responsibilities, practicalities e.g. giving change, storing money.

 Conclusion & Plenary – use spreadsheet to calculate profit/loss, discuss the event – what went well, what could have been better. Make a set of recommendations for the next group of children who’ll be running a similar event.

Before each of these activities pupils should decide whether their objective is to avoid making a loss; to break even or to make a profit. They should decide who will be responsible for any loss and who will benefit from any profit (e.g. the School Council or School Funds)

1. Fair Trade Awareness Day  Description: Class or school-based event.  Expenditure: Range of fair trade foods and drinks.  Possible income: Contributions, ticket sales, purchase of samples, sales of items, sponsorship.  Research: http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/

2. Class party  Description: Class-based event.  Expenditure: Food, drinks, plates, cups, balloons, prizes.  Possible income: Contributions, ticket sales, sales of items.

3. Play/Drama Workshop  Description: Class or school-based event.  Expenditure: Hire of group.  Possible income: Contributions, ticket sales, refreshments, photos.

4. Day Trip  Description: Class-based event.  Expenditure: Admission, transport.  Possible income: Contributions, ticket sales.

5. Climbing Wall/Bungee Trampoline Day/Ice Rink  Description: School-based event.  Expenditure: Hire.  Possible income: Contributions, ticket sales, refreshments, photos.
