Dear Applicant,

The full application for the 2017 Archdiocese of Cincinnati Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl Challenge Grant is now available. Two challenge grants of up to $750 each will be awarded with a preference of one for each category: ● best new participating parish or school ● most expanded participation.

Please be sure to read the criteria information included in the application. Eligible recipients of the challenge grant are those that participated in promoting CRS Rice Bowl activities and collections at their parish and/or school during Lent of 2017.

CRS receives 75% of all donations collected in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati to support CRS’ programs around the world. The remaining 25% of all donations fight hunger and poverty in our Archdiocese.

The Challenge Grants fund uses income from the annual CRS Rice Bowl Collection. The CRS Rice Bowl Challenge Grant is administered by the Catholic Social Action office of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati based on recommendations from the Archdiocesan Catholic Relief Services Committee.

You can submit your proposal in hard copy, or as an email attachment. The deadline is Wednesday, May 31, 2017.

CRS Rice Bowl Challenge Grant Criteria 2016

1. Efforts for CRS Rice Bowl engaged more than one parish or school population: Examples: ● Parish Youth group and adult small faith community or St Vincent de Paul Society ● Parish Education and formation: RCIA, religious education classes and adult education classes ● Multidisciplinary school approach: Religion, Social Studies classes, English and Reading classes ● School – student population as well as creative involvement of families

2. Incorporated CRS Rice Bowl materials and/or information into school or parish worship services Examples: ● Blessing of the Rice Bowls ● Special CRS Rice Bowl prayer service incorporated into Lenten Prayer service ● Distribute Lenten “prayer eggs” in bulletins or have a prayer tree ● Use prayer intentions throughout Lent in Mass and in prayer services or in announcements ● Use CRS Rice Bowl resources to enhance the stations of the cross ● End of Lent Offertory Procession

3. Connected efforts for CRS Rice Bowl to the Catholic Social Teaching (CST) Tradition especially in relationship to Global Solidarity Examples: ● Classes can select one of the CRS Rice Bowl countries or a principle of Catholic Social Teaching, and describe what it means to them through writing, drawing, newspaper clippings, or any other visual media. ● Assign a CRS Rice Bowl country to each grade level in your school, learning groups within your class, or in Religious Education classes. Students research the country throughout Lent and present a report at the end of Lent. ● Adult faith groups: Use the CRS Rice Bowl Lenten Spiritual Guide to provide content for weekly conversations. ● Engaging adult small faith communities with Rice Bowl ● Simple suppers with CRS Rice Bowl recipes and/or CRS speakers and Stations of the Cross

4. Identified new leaders in parish or school who will continue to be a part of this or other justice ministries Examples ● Identify an CRS Rice Bowl coordinator who will implement CRS Rice Bowl each year ● Increase the number of people who serve on your social justice or social action committee through Capacity Building ● Share the mobile app with leaders and their friends

5. Projected use of funds will continue to strengthen parish or school efforts for CST or social justice ● “Projected use of funds” can cover a myriad of projects in your parish or school that enhance or strengthen Catholic Social Teaching or reflect a social justice component, AND can ● Represent a range of approaches (e.g., education, such as Salt & Light or other Catholic Social Teaching programs, advocacy, media linking faith and justice), AND ● Show how the project will be incorporated into parish or school life.

6. At time of application, recipients also will have collected and submitted the CRS Rice Bowl donation to the Archdiocesan Finance Department at 100 East 8th Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202. (Please indicate “CRS Rice Bowl” on the memo- line of your check.) Please note: applications are not evaluated by the amount collected.
