PARENT PARTNERSHIP MEETINGS: Parent Partnership meetings are an opportunity for dialogue between home and school in order to improve what we offer our youngsters and a chance for the school to update parents on educational changes. It is open to all parents and we would be delighted to meet you there. The Autumn Term meeting is on the 15th September at 7.00pm in the main school hall. PLANNER: The school planner is not just a means of recording homework, it also contains a lot of useful information for students to aid them in their studies, such as:

 Advice on bullying

 Information on different learning styles

 Subject specific information and guidance for Maths, English, Science and French

 Thesaurus

 Confused words

 Praising stars records and reflection pages

 Examination skills and ways to revise

 World, Europe and UK maps

 The periodic table

Please check the planner each week and sign it so that school knows you are monitoring their homework and whether they are receiving detentions or not. Such support is obviously invaluable in terms of supporting school and keeping track on how your child is progressing.

EXERCISE BOOKS:

Exercise books and folders contain a record of student’s learning and are vital for revision. If they are forgotten for just one lesson then important sequential steps in learning are disrup- ted. For that reason forgetting them carries a C4 detention. Please help your child avoid a detention for this reason by getting them into the habit of checking their bags the night be - fore against their timetable to make sure they have everything they need.

DRESS & APPEARANCE: We look to parents to support us in maintaining good standards of dress. Wearing school uniform encourages a positive attitude to school and work. Students have always tried to ad- apt the school uniform to their individual tastes; however, it is important that we maintain a standard uniform. For full details of the school’s policy please see the school’s website, though also note the following changes from 2015/16.

New regulations:  School trousers should not be narrow at the ankle – 17cm is the minimum width al- lowed when the trouser is laid flat.  School skirts should have the oak leaf logo near the hem. Any students who do not comply with the new trousers regulation will be either asked to change into trousers provided by school, sent home to change into suitable school attire or placed in the consequences room.

OPEN DAY & EVENING: Scalby School’s Open Day and Evening will be on Tuesday 20 th September 2016. We look for- ward to welcoming any parents on that day who wish to view the school.

ATTENDANCE Good attendance is a fundamental to success in school as it is in employment. If your child’s attendance falls below 90%, they are classed by the government as a ‘persistent absentee’ and the school will contact you to help them return to a healthy attendance figure. Please also note that I cannot authorise holidays for students in term time, except in the most ex- ceptional circumstances, such as a parent is on military service during term time.

ACADEMY STATUS I am pleased to confirm that Scalby will become an academy from 1 st September 2016. We will be the founding member of the Scalby Learning Trust with the aim of working with other schools and colleges in the town to improve educational outcomes for all learners in the area.

Finally, may I thank you for your continuing support which is such a vital component in the success of your son or daughter at Scalby School. I wish you all a good summer break before the new term starts on Tuesday 6 September.

Yours sincerely

David Read Head Teacher
