Ithaca College Spring Tournaments Sydney Landon IV Novice WUDC National Championship 2015

Dear friends,

The Ithaca College Speech and Debate team is pleased to host debates this spring. The Sydney Landon Tournament will offer Worlds Style Open debating and three divisions of CEDA/NDT style debating. We’ll also be hosting the 3rd annual US Novice WUDC Championship. Both tournaments will be held February 7-8 on the Ithaca College campus in Ithaca, NY.

The tournaments are open to U.S. and international colleges and universities.

The Sydney Landon IV will feature six preliminary debates and elimination rounds determined by the number of participants. There will be a division for British Parliamentary (“Worlds”) format. There will also be up to three divisions for CEDA/NDT policy debate. The topic for the Policy debates will be:

Resolved: The United States should legalize all or nearly all of one or more of the following in the United States: marihuana, online gambling, physician-assisted suicide, prostitution, the sale of human organs.

The US Novice WUDC Nationals will feature six preliminary debates and elimination rounds determined by the number of participants. All rounds will be debated in the British Parliamentary (“Worlds”) format. The definition of Novice we will be using is a student who has never competed in any form of college-level debate before this academic year.

The top novice speaker will be recognized with the Margaret Hildebrand Top Novice Speaker Award.

The award is designed to honor Margaret Hildebrand, a nationally-ranked high school and collegiate debater, later on a successful coach and debating enthusiast. Margaret, or Maggie as she was known to her friends, was many things. A successful corporate litigator, a gourmet chef, mother of four, dog lover extraordinaire, wife, and friend. Maggie was a great supporter of debate, providing debate outreach to students from middle school to college all over the world. She worked relentlessly to assist students in learning communication skills and argumentation. Her legacy is honored by this award and it is hoped that the student who wins it exemplifies the skills and values that Maggie supported throughout her time coaching and life.

We expect all teams to be in compliance with N-1. There will be penalty fees for any uncovered teams. Entry fees will be $40 per person (including judges and others in attendance) and an additional $100 for each uncovered registered team. There will be coffee and light refreshments each morning and lunch will be provided each day.

We are also delighted to announce that our Chief Adjudicator for the Worlds style events will be Lindsey Bing from Cornell University. To complete the CA team she’ll be joined by Nelson Kezoh from St. Johns, Becca White from Vermont and En Ting Lee from Cornell. Tab will be run by Justin Ying and Nick Rasch (Cornell).

The tab staff for the policy portion of the tournament will be announced soon.

Looking forward to seeing ya’ll in Ithaca,

Scott Thomson
