Upward Bound Summer Program Handbook

[UPWARD BOUND SUMMER PROGRAM HANDBOOK]

Summer Welcome Welcome to the Upward Bound Summer Program! We are very excited about your participation in the coming weeks. The summer program is designed to help our students grow as scholars and individuals, and we expect only the best from you. Please take the time to read through this handbook so that you are fully aware of what is expected from you this summer. We expect you to follow our rules, attend class, participate fully in activities, be a role model, study hard, and grow from the UB experience. We see the potential you have, so please be willing to accept our help and guidance and use them to help make your summer better and more productive. Why Should You Participate in the Summer Program?  Because you have to successfully participate in at least 1 summer program to qualify for the Summer Bridge Program Scholarship the summer after you graduate. The Summer Bridge Program Scholarship offers 1 John Wood College class and books to help you transition to college. This scholarship is worth approximately $500!

 Because it will prepare you for your classes next year – you will be ahead of all your classmates!

 Because you will learn what it is like to live in dorms and be independent (for the most part!)

 Because you will get to know new people in the program! Even if you participated last year, new students are accepted every year. There are new students to meet every year! While some experiences are similar each summer, we do things that keep it different each year!

 Because you earn much more money than during the school year – up to $360! And even if you have a job, you can still work on the weekends. Summer program runs Monday through Thursday. Summer Program Components

Week 1 - Wilderness Experience – Horn Field Campus – Macomb, IL During the first week of the UB summer program, students travel to Macomb to attend Horn Field Campus, which is administered by Western Illinois University Personnel. Students, Resident Assistants, and UB Staff spend four days getting to know each other and building relationships with each other for the rest of the summer. All students and staff participate in activities that increase trust and confidence in themselves of what they can accomplish. Students and staff are encouraged to push their limits by participating in activities such as rock climbing, high ropes course, hiking, and other activities. We will also visit the Western Illinois University Admissions Staff and take a tour of the campus.

Weeks 2-5 - Academic/Dorm Experience – JWCC & Quincy University Students attend classes scheduled as college classes to experience a college time schedule. Classes offered are designed for students to get a jump-start for the upcoming school year in Math, Science, English, and Foreign Language. Students also take classes that improve their personal skills for their future in Upward Bound. Students attend classes at John Wood Community College and stay in dorms at Quincy University, Monday nights through Wednesday nights. Students return home Thursday evening after their last class. In the evenings, students get to experience the social aspect of dorm life and will | Students & Parents 2 [UPWARD BOUND SUMMER PROGRAM HANDBOOK] learn how to manage their time between having fun and completing their homework. Social activities will be offered in the evenings that are typically available on a college campus. Activities examples include: athletic games, movie nights, video game competitions, and special projects, just to name a few.

Week 6 - College Tour The last week of the summer program is the college tour. On the college tour, students get to travel to a destination somewhere in the United States to visit colleges, attend cultural events and places, and have experiences in places that are not usually available to them in their small hometowns. We visit at least 3 colleges on this trip. Goals Our goals and purposes for the summer program include:  Enhancing students' academic skills and abilities  Helping students feel comfortable in a college environment  Allowing students to experience what it is like to share a dorm room with another person  Creating a sense of trust and kinship with fellow UB students and staff

Respect Policy You are expected to use mature judgment in all your encounters with peers and adults whether you are at an official UB activity or not. In other words, in the dining hall, walking to class with friends, you are to act in a mature and respectful way to EVERYONE! Just because a UB staff member is not present does not mean you can disregard rules. You must treat others as you want to be treated. Think before you speak. Put yourself in the other person’s shoes and consider what you are saying. Students will refrain from gossiping and spreading rumors regarding any members of UB staff or students. Students must speak positively at all times, and not use profane language out of respect for yourself and others. General Rules UB has rules which, if broken, will result in a call to your parent and your dismissal from the UB Summer program and/or the entire UB Program. Students who are sent home for the summer will also lose their privilege to go on the college tour trip and will lose their entire stipend earned. It is possible to accumulate more than one offense in one day, and general rules violations will carry over for the remainder of the time you are in the Upward Bound program. If you are dismissed from the Summer Program, you and your parent(s)/guardian(s) will be required to meet with the Upward Bound Supervisor to determine future eligibility for the Upward Bound Program. GENERAL RULES Violation 1st Offense 2nd Offense 3rd Offense Drugs, Alcohol or Prescription Drugs not Call to parent and prescribed to you by a physician: Use, Immediate possession, being under the influence of or Termination from being in the company of others who are Upward Bound using drugs during an Upward Bound activity Program or while participant is in the care of the UB program and staff, which includes the time the participant leaves home until the time they return home. Class Rules UB is an educational program. For this reason, we have very strict and specific rules and regulations concerning classroom attendance, behavior, and performance. Your stipend primarily depends on your performance in class.

Classroom attendance All students are expected to attend classes unless they are ill or have a death in the immediate family. Instructors will complete a violations and consequences documentation sheet to be submitted to the UB supervisor if a student skips class. If you are sick and cannot attend classes two days in a row, you will be sent home to recuperate for the remainder of that week or until you are well. Students that do not attend class due to being ill will not be allowed to participate in evening activities. If you have to leave campus due to an illness or a death in your family, notify the UB office or your advisor before you leave campus with your parent/guardian. Students are not allowed to miss class without the approval of the UB supervisor or advisor. Being tardy for class will have consequences to be determined by each instructor. Repeatedly being tardy for class will result in a student being dismissed from the summer program. If a student has any unexcused absences—that student will be sent home for the rest of the summer. The staff will evaluate whether or not the student will be allowed to return to UB in the fall. Activities that take you away from Upward Bound that you have previously told us about, such as summer camp or family outings, are excused. If you are sick and have a doctor’s letter, those absences are also excused. You can return to UB when you are well. Bottom line—you are here to be in class!

Classroom behavior As a UB student you will enjoy many of the freedoms and responsibilities associated with college life. Your instructors will, for the most part, regard you as college students. All students are expected to act respectfully to all UB staff and instructors. The use of cell phones and any electronic device is strictly prohibited during class. Using these items during class is a sign of disrespect to instructors. If a student fails to follow the classroom conduct rules, he/she will be reported to the UB Supervisor. If it is determined that the student is not respectfully following UB’s and the instructor’s conduct rules, the

| Students & Parents 17 [UPWARD BOUND SUMMER PROGRAM HANDBOOK] student will be dismissed from the summer program. The reason for dismissal will be shared with the student's parents/guardians.

Classroom progress ALL STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO MAKE CONTINUING PROGRESS IN EACH CLASS. Progress will be measured through quizzes, tests, and evaluations by the instructors. Progress or lack of progress will be reported weekly to UB Staff, and mailed to parents each week. Each student is expected to work up to his/her potential. Performing “just enough to get by” or habitually performing work of poor quality will be viewed as the student telling us that he/she is not committed to themselves or to UB. When progress is not being made in the classroom or when the student is obviously performing below their capacity, the student’s progress will be reported to UB staff. If a student does not improve, that student will be sent home for the rest of the summer. It is the student’s responsibility to fully participate and remain open to learning. If a student is sent home because of poor progress, parents/guardians will be informed of the reason for dismissal.

Classroom Violations & Consequences UB has rules which, if broken, will result in the following consequences. Students who are sent home for the summer will also lose their privilege to go on the college tour trip and will lose their entire stipend earned. CLASS/ACTIVITY RULES

Violation 1st Offense 2nd Offense 3rd Offense Unauthorized absence Call to parent; Dismissal from UB summer program Up to 5 minutes late to class or activity Warning Call to parent Dismissal from UB summer program More than 5 minutes late to class or Call to parent Dismissal from UB activity summer program Refusal to participate in class, failure to Warning Call to parent Dismissal from UB turn in assignments summer program Use of cell phones, iPods, mp3 players, Device will be taken Call to parent; cameras, and other electronic devices away from student Dismissal from UB will not be tolerated during class or UB summer program activities. Electronic devices will be left at the dorms during the day. Cheating on test, quiz or other Call to parent and Termination from assignments Dismissal from UB Upward Bound summer program Program Disrupting class Warning Call to parent Dismissal from UB summer program

Residence Hall Rules When you check into your residence hall, you will receive a room key. If you lose your room key you are responsible for the fee to replace it. Do not loan out your room key! Currently the fee is $75.00. When you check out of your residence hall, your room must be totally cleaned and you must turn in your room key to the UB night supervisor. The fee to replace your key will be deducted from your stipend if you do

| Students & Parents 18 [UPWARD BOUND SUMMER PROGRAM HANDBOOK] not return your key at the end of the summer. The checkout procedures also apply if you leave the program early.

Some specific residence hall rules that apply are as follows: 1) Harassment, intimidation, or fighting of any kind is strictly prohibited. 2) No “horseplay” is allowed. 3) Water fights of any type are prohibited. 4) Quiet hours will be in effect: 11:00 p.m. until 6:45 a.m. 5) Vandalism to property is prohibited. 6) No one is allowed on the UB floors except the residents of that particular floor. 7) Do not drive nails into or paste things onto the walls. 8) Keep the lobbies of the residence halls clean; pick up after yourselves. Dispose of your trash appropriately. 9) Students will be held responsible for damage to residence hall rooms, furniture, fixtures, etc.

Violation of any of the above rules will result in the student being reported to UB staff and supervisor. There will be a room check conducted by Resident Assistants, Night Supervisor, or UB Staff on a random basis at any given time or day. The room check will be used to ensure you are following rules. Candy wrappers, pizza boxes, food scraps, and other debris should be disposed of on a regular basis. Please respect your roommate and keep your rooms tidy. Also, please respect the privacy of your roommate. Do not go into another person’s room without their permission.

Telephone Usage in the Residence Hall Quincy University and UB do not provide telephones for residence hall rooms. UB students who wish to have a private telephone will have to bring their own. If a parent/guardian needs to reach his/her student, a message can be left with the UB office that the student needs to call home. In past summers UB students have, at times, abused telephone usage by calling other students after 11:00 p.m. (“quiet time”). If this situation arises this year, Resident Assistants have the option of confiscating all telephones from UB students every night at 11:00 p.m. This is a drastic measure, but one that will be taken if UB students cannot show responsibility in wise usage of their telephones. Refer to the page 3 for contact information. Career Tours Students get the opportunity, once per week, to visit Quincy area businesses to learn about different careers. During these tours, students get to look behind the scenes of the business to see how work is done, and also learn about what it takes to get into that career, what the advantages and disadvantages are of the job, and – most importantly – how much education is needed to get the job. Students are expected to act respectfully and professionally when we visit area businesses. Community Involvement/Volunteering Students will be participating in community involvement each summer. Students will donate a portion of their time to doing an activity for the community. This is our way for students and staff to give back to the community. Our community is the reason why we have an Upward Bound program at all. It is with | Students & Parents 19 [UPWARD BOUND SUMMER PROGRAM HANDBOOK] taxpayer’s money that this program is funded, and this is our appreciation for being so privileged to be a part of the program. Students can also use these opportunities to put these experiences on their academic resumes when applying for scholarships. The more community involvement you do, the better you look to a scholarship committee! Refer to the class schedule for specific days and times. Computer Usage Students will be given a JWCC Upward Bound account username and password to use on the computers on campus to complete assignments on the computer or to look up information online. Dress Code Students are expected to exercise good taste in choosing apparel to fit the situation. Anything found to be distracting or inappropriate by the UB staff will be mentioned to the student and they will be expected to change their clothing. UB will not allow students to wear t-shirts or other clothing with inappropriate language/pictures to activities either on or off campus. UB staff reserves the right to clarify any “grey areas”. T-shirts advertising beer, cigarettes, or any other offensive type logos are not acceptable clothing for UB activities or classes. Revealing clothing is not to be worn. A saggy pant is not to be worn to any on or off campus activity and underwear is not permitted to show. Shorts and skirts must be at least as long as where your finger tips are when your arms are straight by your side. Casual clothes are acceptable for the majority of our trips/activities. We will give guidelines for specific trips/activities as the summer progresses. Students will be expected to “dress up” for some occasions; these will be announced well in advance of the activity. When students are doing work-study, they must dress in appropriate clothing according to their work-study supervisor. Please take care of your personal hygiene needs. Shower daily and wash your hair frequently. You may fool yourself into thinking you don’t need a bath each day, but you won’t fool those around you! Evening Quiet Hours Each night students are in the dorms, evening quiet hours will be set, usually about 10:30pm Students who are routinely breaking quiet hours will be wrote up.

Illnesses and Injuries The UB staff realizes that students may become ill at some point during the summer program. Any student who is too ill to attend classes two days in a row will be sent home to recuperate for the remainder of that week or until he/she is well. If you feel you need to see a doctor while on campus, please contact UB staff to call your parent to go home. Internet Behavior Students must not use the internet for personal use unless directed by an Upward Bound teacher or staff member. During classroom instruction, students are restricted from surfing on the internet when they are supposed to be working. If students are ever allowed to surf online by teachers, students must not purposely go to inappropriate web sites. Students must follow these guidelines or will lose computer privileges.

| Students & Parents 20 [UPWARD BOUND SUMMER PROGRAM HANDBOOK] July 4th Students will not be attending class on the holiday, UB not in session. Classes will resume the next day (on Tuesday.) Morgan/Pike County Students will be picked up at the park and ride at 7:00am on TUESDAY to arrive at the dorms at 7:45am. The bus will then leave at 7:55am to travel to JWCC for class. (You will be just dropping off your stuff and heading strait back to the bus to go to class.) Quincy Students will be checking into the dorms starting at 7:30am on Tuesday morning

Meals 3 meals a day are provided to all UB students. Students wishing to purchase snacks will have to do so with their own money. Medication Upon arrival for Touch of Nature, check-in for Quincy University, and arrival for the college tour trip, students will turn in all the medication that they are currently taking to the UB or Night Staff Supervisor. Students will be required to get their medication from a Resident Assistant or Supervisor to take their prescribed medication. Students will also have to go to a Resident Assistant to take over the counter medication. Please be sure to list on the medication form that you have turned in all medication that is prescribed, as well as medication that you are allowed to take for common headaches, muscle pain, or menstrual cramps. UB staff will not administer medication unless your medication form says it is ok to do so. All medication must be in their original package/bottle. We will not administer any medications (prescription or over the counter) that are not in their original package or bottle and clearly labeled with student’s name and instructions. This includes Tylenol, Advil, Pepto-Bismol, etc. All medications must not be expired and must be labeled with student’s name. Students will be given back their medication before returning home. Nightly Activities Every Sunday through Wednesday a nightly activity will be presented. These activities will consist of intramural recreational play, games, movies, plays, etc. It is up to the student to attend these or not – depending on if the student has homework to complete. Personal Property Liability UB is not responsible for any losses or damages to personal property brought to campus by a student. Upward Bound will not replace lost, stolen, or damaged property. If theft or damage does occur, parents’ homeowner's or renter’s insurance will sometimes cover the loss even if it occurs in a residence hall. You will need to check with your insurance company to see if you have this type of coverage. UB is also not responsible for losses or damages to personal property while on any trip or event. Please be responsible for your own belongings by always keeping your dorm room or hotel room locked. If you suspect that something has been stolen, then talk to any UB staff member.

| Students & Parents 21 [UPWARD BOUND SUMMER PROGRAM HANDBOOK] Special Trips/Activities Several trips/activities have been planned for the summer. We present a wide variety of trips/activities. We realize that you may not enjoy each and every trip/activity that we have. However, you have been chosen to become a member of this program and while you may not “love” every activity, we expect you to participate fully and act positively about the activity/trip. Each of our activities/trips has something to offer every student if he/she will only take advantage of it. All tickets/entry fees are paid by Upward Bound. Stipends Students can earn up to $360 during the summer program. Earning the entire amount depends on the student's academic progress, participation, and level of effort in class and evening activities. Student stipends will also be determined by behavior and attitude towards UB staff and fellow students. The harder you try and more mature you act, the more money you earn. Students who are sent home for the summer due to violating rules will earn no stipend. Below is what the assessment looks like that instructors complete towards your stipend.

| Students & Parents 22 [UPWARD BOUND SUMMER PROGRAM HANDBOOK] Student Supervision During all trips and outings, students are always under the supervision of UB staff. During classes, it is the student's responsibility to arrive to class on time and on their own. Due to all students having personalized schedules, students are not supervised in groups. Students who must be late because they are using the bathroom must tell their instructor where they are before class begins. Students who repeatedly do not arrive to class on time will be sent home for the summer. A student who fails to show up for class will be sent home for the summer. During the evenings, after lights out, a resident assistant will remain on duty throughout the night at all times.

Leaving for an Excused Absence All students that have excused absences for the day must check in/out with the UB Office OR the Night Supervisor if it is at night. Students must go to the UB office or go to the Night Supervisor and sign in/out for when they are leaving for an appointment AND arriving back from an appointment. If a UB staff member is unavailable in the office during the day when arriving or leaving, then they must sign the clipboard on the Manager’s Door. Transportation To/From Quincy & Pittsfield Park and Ride Transportation will be provided on the way to and returning from WIU’s Horn Field Campus (Week 1) between the Pittsfield Park and Ride and the JWCC Quincy Campus. Transportation will also be provided for students on Monday and Thursdays during the academic portion (Weeks 2-5,) with the exception of the residence hall move-in night and move-out night. It varies if we provide transportation for the college tour trip (Week 6,) depending on which direction we go and what time we leave. We will always keep parents informed of if transportation is provided this week from Pittsfield to Quincy.

Authorization for Pick-up Upward Bound students are the responsibility of Upward Bound staff during Upward Bound programming hours (the hours we have things going on.) When our programming is over, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to ensure their child is picked up and returned home. Upward Bound is not liable for students leaving with other students or with someone other than you. However, if a parent ever has a concern about this, then please speak with the UB Program Manager, and we will help in any way we can. Use of Privately Owned Vehicles UB students who wish to drive to campus on Monday mornings must hand the keys over to the night supervisor. The keys will be returned to the student on Thursday evenings. The night supervisor must be informed by the parents/guardians that the student will be driving his/her own car. This notification must be prior to the actual trip to campus. All UB students will travel to and from activities/trips in UB sponsored vehicles. Use of Cell Phones/MP3 Players During Class/Activities Students are not allowed to use their cell phones/mp3 players while in class. Students may carry cell phones with them, however, it is each student’s responsibility to put the phone on silent or turn it off | Students & Parents 23 [UPWARD BOUND SUMMER PROGRAM HANDBOOK] while in class or at activities, etc. In short, any time students are involved in UB activities of any kind, cell phone usage is prohibited. If a student’s cell phone rings during any activity, the phone will be confiscated by UB staff and will be returned to the student at that day’s floor meeting. Repeated violation of this rule will result in a student's dismissal from the summer program. If parents need to get in touch with students, the student will be able to call a parent back between classes or activities. Work-study Program The Work-study Program is a mandatory program for all UB students during the UB summer session. Students will be placed in offices around the John Wood Community College Campus according to each student’s particular chosen major or career path. However, some careers are not always available or are restricted to college obligations to confidentiality agreements. Students will receive their work-study information on move-in day. The purpose of this program is to introduce students to college work-study by actually working in different college departments. Students will be expected to follow the rules/guidelines of their work-study supervisor. Students should dress nicely on Tuesdays and Thursdays during work study (khakis, dress shirts, polo shirts, dress pants.) Students will be evaluated weekly based off of their performance. Failure to follow these rules will result in dismissal from the UB summer program. Write-Ups/Violations When every attempt has been made with a student to correct a behavior, and that student has chosen to continue to break the rules, the student will be written up. If the violation is a serious violation, a student can be written up after the first occurrence. Write ups/violations will be a $50 deduction per occurrence off of a student’s stipend.
