MUEN 2125

This ensemble provides training in all styles of jazz and dance band performance. Smaller jazz ensembles are drawn from the membership of this group. Admission is by consent of the director. May be repeated four times for credit.

Pre-requisites:

Introduction and Purpose

1. To provide training in all styles of jazz and dance band performance. 2. To have a small portable performing instrumental organization to represent the college at functions where a larger ensemble would be impractical. 3. To act as a lab for serious music students to perform original compositions. 4. This is a transfer course to most senior colleges. Instructional Materials

Textbook: None Supplies and additional materials: Uniforms are made or bought with the consent of the group. Students need reeds, valve oil, swabs, slide cream or oil for their particular instrument.

Objectives At the completion of this course the student should be able to:

1. Play in an ensemble. 2. Work in a team environment. 3. Perform on a higher level on their instrument than in the beginning of the course. 4. Appreciate music from various styles and influences. 5. Perform in concert situations with the band.

Methods of Instruction

The rehearsal of an ensemble is assessed primarily by the playing of music, then the evaluation of the playing by the instructor, the giving of criticism and positive reinforcement.

Methods of Evaluation

1. Attendance is the major factor in determining the student’s grade. 2. Attitude, preparation, and improvement are also factors used in determining a grade. 3. Students must be at all rehearsals and performances.

Letter grades for the course will be based on the following percentages: 90-100% A 80-89% B 70-79% C 60-69% D Below 60% F
