MINUTES Math Department Meeting September 14, 2010

1. Alliance for College Readiness – Alison Douglas Alison invited all to attend the upcoming meeting-dinner on September 30 from 4:00 to 6:30 in the Business Center. Dr. Christopher Koch, State Superintendent of Education, will give the keynote presentation on the Common Core State Standards in English and Mathematics. And Dr. Elaine Johnson (ICCB) will comment on the implications for community college educators. Those planning to attend should RSVP to [email protected] by September 24.

2. Setting Up Folder Access – Chris McCoy Chris outlined how to set up access to folders from both an instructor’s office and from a classroom lab. When signing on to a lab computer (on the ACADEMIC network), an instructor’s AccessECC login is required. This account comes with a MyDocuments folder. To access this folder from your office computer, you need to set up access by going to “employee portal” on the ECC home page. Then go to “File Access” at the bottom of the page and click on “Office – get instructions”. After following the steps, your documents folder will be available from your office computer under “My Network Places” on the Start menu. (Dan Kernler pointed out that some may prefer to carry a portable flash drive containing their files.)

3. AMATYC Conference The annual AMATYC conference is November 11-14 in Boston. Contact Dan if you would like to add your name to a group proposal to attend. UAF2 teachers have $3000 development money that they can use for such a conference, which includes conference registration, transportation, hotel and meals. The Development Committee will definitely OK such conference attendance, and adjuncts may use one sick day as a professional day.

4. College Night Kenny, Chalyce and Dave volunteered to participate at the math table on College Night, on Tuesday, October 5 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

5. Assessment The issues of creating a department final for MTH 096, and mandating the use of the current department final for MTH 098 were set for discussion at the next departmental meeting.

6. Room assignments for Spring, Fall, 2010 Dan spoke of the need to be flexible in accepting classroom assignments because of the current space problem. There was agreement, however, that the effort to free up more space should not affect the status of MSC 203 as a dedicated computer lab for use by the division.

7. Math XL It was pointed out that MyMathLab can be used only in conjunction with an associated textbook, whereas MathXL can be used beyond the course it is purchased for. For special cases, like the problem of using the MML software in retaking a course that has updated a book’s edition, Kristin should be contacted to find solutions on a case-by-case basis.

8. Achieving the Dream Update: The Math Dev Ed Task Force The developmental education curriculum will be a focus for the math department this year. Cathy, Nicole, Dan and Chalyce are serving on the committee, aiming to develop ideas for a pilot program for fall, 2011. Jennifer Meadows will be joining the AtD team and Mary Ann will continue her involvement. Later on the whole department will be invited to offer input.
