Removing the Intake Silencer

Removing the Intake Silencer By: George Curto

I decided to write up this easy project after seeing a few posts about it on the website. I would rate this project a 1 wrench because it is very easy and no tools are required. All you need is some strength to pull out the air box and you are ready to get started!

If some of you don’t know what the intake silencer is; it is the small tube that goes from inside the air box and then ends right behind the passenger side headlight. This quiets the air entering the box but it is also very restrictive. After removing it you will have a much bigger hole for the air to enter.

The first thing I did was to unhook the 2 latches that hold the airbox lid onto the bottom part. Take off the top and move it to the side (it is not necessary to disconnect the tubing or anything). Next I removed the air filter. Inside the box you will see the air silencer tube. The easiest way to remove it is to first remove the airbox from the truck.

The airbox is held in by 4 rubber grommets. There are 2 on the bottom right and another 2 going into the side wall. You just need to pull hard on the box and they will pop out. I removed the bottom ones first starting with the one closest to the rear. Then just pull out the side ones.

Once the box is out of the truck the silencer can be removed by pulling it from the outside and wiggling it a little. The whole thing will pull out and you will see the much larger hole that you now have available. The hole in the box itself is an oval that measures about 3.5” wide and 2.5” tall. The silencer is circular and at the smallest part measures 1.75” in diameter, which is a huge difference.

Now all that is left is to put the airbox back in. This time I attached the side grommets first and then pushed down and attached the bottom ones. Then put in the air filter and re-attach the airbox lid and the latches. When you start it up you will be able to hear the difference. You can hear the extra air being pulled in and it makes the truck have a stronger sound under the hood. I also replaced the stock air filter with a K&N replacement (part #33-2106-1). You will feel a little more punch and it will also sound great. Enjoy!
