David is well known for his work with California Junipers and Black Pines. His experience includes studying under Harry Hirao, Ben Oki, Ernie Kuo, as well as Masahiko Kimura in Japan. David is well known for his skills and advanced techniques found in his signature trees and has been referred to by the GSBF, Golden State Bonsai Federation, as "Mr California Juniper II".

Located in the middle of the city in Chino is the hidden Bonsai Jidai nursery. Driving by, you may see our large Torii gate. But for a true immersive bonsai experience, you'll need to come see the inside for yourself. New and seasoned enthusiasts appreciate the vast variety of bonsai species and fully styled show trees on display.

Our garden also features a vast collection of imported pots, both from China and Japan. Take a walk through our Japanese Black Pine section and California Juniper raw material. We love to welcome guests. However, visits are by appointment only.

At Bonsai Jidai, we focus heavily on fundamentals and hands on learning. With a solid understanding of bonsai fundamentals, we can design a tree to its fullest value. Our courses include reviewing the basic concept and maintenance methods. For seasoned students, we move on to more advanced techniques including root training, heavy bending, and advanced design.

Bonsai Jidai is Southern California's Premier School of Bonsai. Founded by bonsai master David Nguy and his wife, June Nguy, the school strives to further the knowledge and techniques of the art to only the most serious and devoted students.

Formally trained by renowned bonsai master, Masahiko Kimura, in Japan, David employs the styles made popular in Japan along with his own developed techniques in his teaching. He emphasizes group collaboration and hands on application through his courses. http://www.bonsaijidai.com/

An interesting side note to David's demo was a report by program chair Ron Reekers on his recent visit to Masahiko Kimura sensei in Japan. Ron was delivering several gifts from David and his wife June to Mr. Kimura. Several years ago, David was invited to study with him in Japan, which is a great honor and was able to go there and study for several months. Ron and his wife arrived at Mr. Kimura's nursery with no great expectations, having heard from many people that he rarely has time to greet people personally. They were very surprised and pleased to be invited to join him for tea during which Mr. Kimura expressed his great fondness and respect for David and June. “David Bguy Masters Black Pine,” Kofu Kai Review, July 2013, pg. 3, http://media.wix.com/ugd/1c8879_5fb5ad848bbb62ca2adb3f2eebf0228e.pdf

To some in the bonsai community, David Nguy is becoming known as Mr. California Juniper II. David’s first teacher was Harry Hirao (“Mr. California Juniper”), so it is no wonder that he is known for his work on California junipers. David also studied under bonsai master Masahiko Kimura in Japan at the same time as Ryan Neil.

The club was founded in 1946 by Americans of Japanese descent when they returned from internment camp. I first joined in the mid - 1980's and at that time I think I was the second non Japanese American member. Now most of our Older Founding Members have passed on and the club is quite different.
