RUTH ROSE PLUNKETT AWARD APPLICATION – FALL 2008

Two $500 scholarships are available. Applications due by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 6, 2008.

The benefactors of the scholarship program seek to honor the memory of Ruth Rose Plunkett. Ruth Rose Plunkett was a foster-care mother who provided a home to sixty-three children from the Los Angeles Foster Care System throughout her life. The primary benefactor for this scholarship has been Dr. Ruth Aura Ross. Dr. Ross was one of the few children of the sixty-three children to graduate from high school. Most of the others entered into work-study. Dr. Ross earned her Ph.D. at the University of Southern California and served the California State University, Long Beach community as a faculty member in Public Policy and Administration for twenty years. Eligibility Requirements: 1. Must have spent time in the Los Angeles foster care system or received welfare from Los Angeles County at some point in life. 2. Must have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA (current CSULB students) or a minimum cumulative 2.8 GPA (incoming freshman or transfer student). 3. Must be an entering or a current undergraduate student. 4. Must be a full-time student enrolled in at least 12 units. 5. Financial need will be considered.

Please complete the application in Microsoft Word, print, sign it and deliver to the Center for Scholarship Information (located in the 2nd floor courtyard of University Student Union, Room 238).

Personal Statement Instructions

When you turn in the application packet, please include a personal statement that discusses the following items:

1. Your background in the Los Angeles foster care system and/or in the Los Angeles County welfare system

2. Any unusual experiences you had within a foster care system or in a welfare influences environment

Please follow the following directions when writing the personal statement:

1. Must be no longer than one page,

2. Must be double-spaced,

3. Must use 12 pt font,

4. Must use Times New Roman.

5. For confidentiality reasons, please do not put your name on your personal statement. Type your Student ID number and the scholarship name in the upper left corner.
