ProctorU FAQ

ProctorU:  What is involved in the set-up and how long does it usually take?

o The proctor will make sure the environment is appropriate for testing.

. Ensure you are in a well-lit, quiet and private room. The lighting of your room must be daylight quality and overhead lighting is preferred. If overhead lighting is not possible, please make sure that your light source is not directly behind you because it will make it difficult for your proctor to see you.

. If your webcam is built into your laptop or desktop and it cannot be removed or detached, you will also need a reflective surface such as a smartphone, DVD, CD, or a small mirror. This is needed so your proctor can verify that the monitor surface is clear of any materials.

o Next, the proctor will authenticate your identity.

. Please have your government-issued photo ID ready.

. You will take a short authentication quiz and show the proctor your photo ID.

o The proctor snapped my picture. Why? And what is it used for?

. The photo is a part of the authentication process for ProctorU. Taking a file photo allows them to complete three factor authentication: Something you are (your photo), something you have (your photo I.D.), and something you know (the authentication quiz).

. The photo is kept on file by ProctorU for their records.

o If your computer is in good working condition with a sufficient high speed internet connection, the set up should not take more than 10 minutes.

 Where does Epic get those authentication questions we answer?

o We don’t! ProctorU works with a company called Acxiom to gather the information through public records. Epic never receives any of the information.

 What kind of access does the Proctor have on my machine, and will they be able to do anything without my knowledge?

o The proctor cannot access files or other information on your computer. It’s a good idea not to have anything viewable on the computer screen that you don’t want the proctor to see (email, banking info, pictures, etc.).

 How does ProctorU gain access to my machine?

o With the user’s permission, the proctor is able to view the computer screen using screen sharing software (LogMeIn). You will be asked to confirm with a dialog box before the proctor can view the computer screen.

o You will be able to see any and all actions that the Proctor would take on your monitor.
