Guidelines for Completing and Submitting Lesson Plans for World Languages

Due Dates

. Monday’s by 12:00 noon at the latest  If school closed, due on first day of school for that week.  I will schedule a meeting with you during the first full week of school to discuss your plans, answer any questions you may have, and to offer any guidance as necessary.

How to Submit Lesson Plans

 Plans should be emailed as an attachment.  The subject line in the email should read: “Lesson Plans”

To Whom Plans Should be Sent

 High School teachers should email plans to supervisor only  Middle School teachers should email plans to supervisor and copy the building principal if you wish

Lesson Plans should be written in English, although specific references to vocabulary or functions may be written in the target language. Your lesson plans provide an important guide to follow in the event of your absence. Therefore, they must be in English, and they must provide enough detail to ensure that either the supervisor, the principal, or a substitute can follow and interpret them.

What MUST be Included in Lesson Plans

 Time period of plan (Week of Sept. 17, 2009)  Language and Level, and Class period(s) (Spanish II Accelerated, period 9; German IV Academic period 4/5; 7th Grade French, periods 2, 3, 5)  Name of Unit in which lesson takes place  Teacher’s Name  Reference to 2009 State Core Curriculum Content Standard, including mode(s) of communication  At least one Student Learning Objective (Skills-based) for each day  Procedure/Activities: Should be clearly explained  Homework  Assessments (Formative & Summative) What else SHOULD be Included in Lesson Plans

 Do Now – Think of the “hook” that will engage your students in your planned activities  Closure Activity – How will students demonstrate if they learned your lesson’s objective(s)? What will they “take away” from the day’s lesson?  Materials  At least 3-4 different daily activities that address the various language skills and modes of communication – Interpretive (Listening/Reading), Interpersonal (Speaking/Writing), Presentational (Speaking/Writing)  Daily opportunities for meaningful interpersonal communicative interactions and exchanges between and among students  Daily integration of cultural perspectives, products, and/or practices

Characteristics of Effective World Language Lessons:  Activities that engage ALL learners in the class  Activities that are varied and address different learning modalities (visual, kinesthetic, auditory learners)  Activities that are Student-centered

What to also think about as you are planning your lessons: How will you facilitate your students’ understanding of your directions so that you can conduct your class in the Target Language?  Model  Demonstrate  Provide Examples  Provide Visuals  Act Out  Facial Expressions

EMERGENCY PLANS MUST BE KEPT ON FILE IN YOUR ROOM AT ALL TIMES.
