ALUMINUM PROJECTING WINDOWS

PART - GENERAL

SUMMARY

Section Includes:

Provide aluminum projecting window units indicated as Window Type [____] on Drawings.

Provide aluminum fixed window units indicated as Window Type [_____] on Drawings.

Provide aluminum projecting window units and related fixed window units which are a part of an overall window assembly which contains both projecting and fixed windows.

Provide appurtenances which relate to window assemblies provided under this Section, as specified or noted on Drawings and as required for a complete installation, which may include mullion assemblies, aluminum trim, support angles, closures, expansion joint covers, and flashing as required for a complete and weathertight installation.

Provide glass and glazing materials.

Provide anchorage, including clips, fasteners, and other components required to secure window assemblies to adjacent construction.

Provide sill sealer between aluminum framing members and adjacent concrete and masonry surfaces.

Provide aluminum subframes for window units.

Provide aluminum window sills and related accessories.

Provide opening limitation devices on windows.

Provide sealant and related accessories, including primer and sealant backup, on both exterior and interior sides of window frames where frames meet dissimilar materials and where aluminum window sills meet dissimilar materials.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

Design Requirements: Operating (projecting) units of windows shall be out-swinging, top hinged awning windows with screens. Sash members of operable units shall interlock with frame members so glazed area of operating unit is equal in area to glazed fixed areas and sightlines of all glazed areas are in-line both horizontally and vertically.

General Requirements:

Window units shall meet performance requirements specified in ANSI/AAMA 101 and AAMA 910 for a P-HC65 window.

Provide aluminum window units that meet performance requirements specified, as demonstrated by testing windows according to test methods specified.

Test Procedures: Window unit shall be tested by a recognized independent testing laboratory accredited by AAMA.

Sizes of test units for air infiltration, water resistance, and structural performance shall conform to minimum size requirements specified in ANSI/AAMA 101.

Test units shall be glazed, completely assembled, and constructed in accordance with requirements indicated. Perform tests on units with window sash and ventilators closed and locked.

Materials and workmanship used in test units shall be identical to those proposed for Project. Use of non-representative measures or techniques is prohibited.

Perform the various performance tests on window units in order specified in AAMA 910.

Performance Requirements:

Air Infiltration Test: Maximum 0.10 cfm per foot of crack length at 6.24 psf pressure differential when tested in accordance with ASTM E283.

Water Resistance Test: No uncontrolled water leakage at minimum 10.00 psf static air pressure differential with water rate of 5 gallons per hour per square foot when tested in accordance with ASTM E331.

Uniform Load Deflection Test: No glass breakage, permanent damage to fasteners, hardware parts, or damage to make window inoperable or deflection of any unsupported span (meeting rails, muntins, frames, mullions, or other appurtenances) in excess of L/175 at both a positive and a negative load in minimum of 40 psf (design wind pressure) when tested in accordance with ASTM E330.

Uniform Load Structural Test:

Test unit at 1.5 times design wind pressure both positive and negative, acting normal to plane of wall in accordance with ASTM E330. No glass breakage, permanent damage to fasteners, hardware parts, or damage to make window inoperable or permanent deformation of any main frame or ventilator section in excess of 0.2 percent of its span.

Ventilator Torsion Test: Deflection at unrestrained corner shall not exceed .1875A (where A is the area in square feet of ventilator tested).

Vertical Deflection Test: Permanent vertical deflection at lower unrestrained corner shall not exceed 0.062 inch after load removal.

Condensation Resistance Factor Test (CRF):

Perform test in strict accordance with AAMA 1503.1 procedure. Condensation Resistance Factor (CRF) minimum 51 for glass and 56 for frame. Data From Calculations: Test results on units of different sizes or configuration not acceptable.

Thermal Test (AU@ Value):

Perform test in exact accordance with AAMA 1503.1 procedure. Thermal transmittance (“U”) maximum 0.70 BTU per hour per square foot degree F at 15 mph exterior wind velocity. Data From Calculations: Test results on units of different sizes or configuration not acceptable.

SUBMITTALS

General Requirements: Provide submittals in accordance with Section 01 33 00.

Product Data: Submit the following:

Construction Details and Fabrication Methods Data on Hardware, Accessories, and Finishes Installation Recommendations

Shop Drawings: Shop Drawings shall be prepared by the window manufacturer. Shop Drawings prepared by window distributor or installer are not acceptable. Include information not fully detailed in manufacturer’s standard Product Data and the following:

Layout and Installation Details; including anchors and section cuts through head, jambs, and sill for every type of window installation Elevations of Each Window Type Hardware, including operators Glazing and Caulking Details Details of Accessories

Samples of Finish:

Provide samples of aluminum finish for Architect’s approval prior to fabrication.

Submit a minimum of (2) samples of finish on window members.

Where finishes involve normal color variations, include sample sets showing full range of variations expected.

Samples for Verification Purposes:

Architect reserves right to require additional samples that show fabrication techniques and workmanship and design of hardware and accessories.

Submit 4-sided, 24-inch by 24-inch minimum mock-up window unit, including screen, accessories, and related hardware.

Certification: Provide certification by a recognized independent testing laboratory or agency showing that each type and size of window unit complies with performance requirements specified.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Manufacturer Qualifications: Not less than 10 years experience in manufacturing aluminum windows of the type specified.

Installer Qualifications:

Installer shall be experienced in proper installation of aluminum windows and familiar with product to be installed.

Window manufacturer shall certify competence of installer and that installer is an authorized agent of window manufacturer.

Upon request, submit a reference list with a minimum of (10) completed projects of similar scope.

Manufacturer's Inspection and Certification of Window Installation:

Window manufacturer may review window installation with installer prior to installer proceeding with installation and during window installation, in order to ensure compliance with manufacturer=s installation recommendations.

Window manufacturer shall inspect final window installation to determine if windows have been installed in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and approved shop drawings.

Window manufacturer shall submit to Architect a letter certifying that windows have been properly installed in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and approved Shop Drawings. Window installation will not be considered complete without certification letter being submitted.

SITE CONDITIONS

Field Measurements:

Check actual window openings by accurate field measurement before start of fabrication. Show recorded measurements on final Shop Drawings.

Coordinate fabrication schedule with construction progress to avoid delay of work.

Where necessary, proceed with fabrication without field measurements and coordinate fabrication tolerances to ensure proper fit of window units.

Environmental Requirements for Application of Sealant:

Meet requirements of sealant manufacturer=s recommendations for maximum and minimum application temperatures and humidity.

Do not apply sealant when temperature is below 40 degrees F unless approved by Architect.

WARRANTY

Aluminum Window Manufacturers Warranty:

Submit a written warranty, executed by window manufacturer, agreeing to repair or replace window units that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period. Failures include, but are not limited to:

Structural failures, including excessive deflection, excessive leakage, or air infiltration. Faulty operation of sash and hardware. Deterioration of metals, metal finishes, and other materials beyond normal weathering.

Manufacturer’s Warranty Period:

10-year warranty on materials and workmanship. 10-year warranty on weathertightness of installation; air, water, and structural adequacy of units, hardware, and sealants within installation.

Warranty shall not deprive Owner of other rights or remedies that the Owner may have under other provisions of the Contract Documents and is in addition to and runs concurrent with other warranties made by Contractor under requirements of the Contract Documents.

Manufacturer's Warranty on Insulating Glass:

Provide written warranty signed by manufacturer of insulating glass agreeing to furnish freight-on-board from point of manufacture, freight allowed on-site, within specified warranty period, replacements for those insulating glass units developing manufacturing defects.

Manufacturing defects are defined as failure or hermetic seal of air space (beyond that due to glass breakage) as evidenced by intrusion of dirt or moisture, internal condensation or fogging, deterioration of protected internal glass coatings, if any, and other visual indications of seal failure or performance.

Manufacturer’s warranty period shall be not less than 10 years from date of Substantial Completion.

Manufacturer's Warranty on Coated Glass Products:

Provide written warranty signed by manufacturer of coated glass agreeing to furnish freight-on-board (FOB) from point of manufacture, to site, within specified warranty period, replacements for those coated glass units which develop manufacturing defects.

Manufacturing defects are defined as peeling, cracking or deterioration in metallic coating due to normal conditions and not due to handling, installation, or cleaning practices contrary to glass manufacturer’s published instructions.

Manufacturer’s warranty period shall be not less than 10 years from date of Substantial Completion.

WINDOW MATERIALS

Extruded Aluminum Members: Extruded from prime billet aluminum 6063-T5 or T6 alloy/temper in accordance with Project requirements for strength, corrosion resistance, and application of required finish. Minimum wall thickness of members to be as follows:

Glazing Legs and Hinge/Lock Attachment Points: Minimum 0.125 Inch Main Frame Members: Minimum 0.125 Inch Glazing Beads: Minimum 0.050 Inch Panning: Minimum 0.078 Inch Trim: Minimum 0.060 Inch

Fasteners:

Use exposed fasteners only where unavoidable.

Exposed fasteners to match finish of adjacent work and be Phillips flat head machine screws.

Fastening devices to be non-magnetic stainless steel, or may be hot-dip zinc coated steel when part is not exposed after installation.

Self-tapping sheet metal screws or speed-nuts are not acceptable as fastening devices.

Concealed Window Accessories: Concealed window accessories, including anchors, clips, reinforcing, and other concealed components, to be of aluminum, non-magnetic stainless steel or hot-dip zinc coated steel or iron, depending on compatibility with aluminum window members, strength requirements, and corrosion-resistant requirements.

Wire Fabric Screen Cloth: 18-inch by 16-inch mesh, 0.013-inch diameter aluminum wire, complying with requirements of Federal Specification RR-W-365, Type VII.

Color: Compliment color of glass and window finish as approved by Architect.

Color: Anodized charcoal.

Color: Match existing window screens.

Hardware:

Roto-operators, limit stops, cam lock

GLASS MATERIALS

1-Inch Clear Tempered Insulating Glass With Low-E Coating - Glass Type GL ____:

Guardian Industries Corporation Oldcastle Building Envelope PPG Industries

Description: Units shall consist of an exterior pane and an interior pane of 1/4-inch clear float glass with a 1/2-inch sealed air space between. Apply a low-emissivity (Low-E) coating on the No. 2 surface. Horizontally temper both exterior (.030) and interior panes of glass first floor. Tempered/tempered 2nd floor and above.

Produce Performance:

GLAZING MATERIALS AND SYSTEM

General: Window manufacturer’s standard factory glazing system that produces a weathertight seal.

Setting Blocks/Edge Blocking:

Provide in sizes and locations recommended by Glass Association of North America (GANA) Glazing Manual.

Setting blocks used in conjunction with soft-coat Low-E glass shall be silicone.

Tapes and Beads:

Back-bedding tapes, expanded cellular glazing tapes, toe beads, heel beads, and cap beads shall meet the requirements of applicable specifications in AAMA 800.

Spacer tape in continuous contact with structural silicone shall be tested for compatibility and approved by sealant manufacturer for intended application.

Gaskets:

Glazing gaskets shall be non-shrinking, weather resistant, and compatible with all materials in contact.

Gaskets in continuous contact with structural silicone shall be extruded silicone or compatible material.

Silicone Sealant: Structural silicone sealant where used shall meet the requirements of ASTM C1184.

CAULKING MATERIALS

Multi-Component Polyurethane Sealant:

Applicable Standards: In accordance with ASTM C920, Type M, Grade NS, Class 25, Use NT, M, A, and O.

Acceptable Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements of the Contract Documents, acceptable manufacturers are as follows or Owner approved equal:

Sealant Colors: Architect will select and has the option to select from products of all acceptable manufacturers to obtain colors desired to match or contrast with adjacent material colors.

Sealant Related Accessory Materials:

Joint Cleaner, Joint Primer, Bond Breaker Tape, and/or Sealant Backer Rod (Sealant Back-Up) (Cylindrical Sealant Backings): As recommended/approved by sealant manufacturer. Sealant must not bond to backing material.

ACCESSORY MATERIALS

Subframes (Receptors): Provide window manufacturer=s standard, or modified standard (as approved by Architect), thermally broken, extruded aluminum subframe that will accomodate the window wall system. Provide subframe continuous at head and sill of each window wall

unit.

FABRICATION OF THERMALLY BROKEN PROJECTING WINDOWS

Thermal Break Construction:

Thermally break frame and sash members using an integrally concealed low conductance thermal barrier which provides complete metal-to-metal separation between those window members exposed to the exterior and those window members exposed to the interior.

There shall be a minimum 1/4-inch thermal separation between exterior and interior frame and sash members.

Hardware or fasteners shall not violate thermal barrier.

Fabricate and shop assemble frame and sash members into complete units under the responsibility of one manufacturer.

Fabricate to allow for thermal movement of materials when subjected to a temperature differential from minus 30 degrees F to plus 180 degrees F without damage.

Window Frame Construction: Actual thickness of materials shall be not less than specified. Depth of frame shall be not less than [2 1/4 inches] [3 1/4 inches] [4 1/2 inches]. Mechanically join frame members.

Window Sash Construction:

Actual thickness of material shall be no less than specified.

Sash members shall be tubular, no less than [2 1/2 inches] [3 1/4 inches] deep.

Corners shall be mitered, reinforced, and securely fastened.

Outside face of sash shall be flush with face of frame. Overlap construction is not acceptable.

Hardware:

Locking:

Provide die cast white bronze or stainless steel cam locks with handles with strike/keeper for manual operation. Cam handles shall attach to sash member with stainless steel screws threaded into hardened metal grommet fasteners. Threading directly into aluminum extrusions is not acceptable.

Hinging:

A minimum of (2) stainless steel concealed 4-bar adjustable friction hinges per vent meeting AAMA 904.1.

Limit Opening Device:

Provide concealed device designed to limit sash opening to 12 inches. Operation of sash beyond limit of limit opening device shall be by use of tool or removable key.

Weatherstripping:

Provide double neoprene weatherstripping installed into grooves extruded in sash members.

Adhesive applied weatherstripping is not acceptable.

Weatherstripping shall be replaceable.

FABRICATION OF THERMALLY BROKEN FIXED WINDOWS

Construction:

Fixed window units shall be of similar design, construction, and materials to that specified for window units with operating sash which fixed units are associated with.

Fixed window units shall maintain similar sightlines to adjacent operating windows to provide a harmonious appearance.

FABRICATION OF ALUMINUM SILLS

General Requirements: Provide aluminum window sills and related components required for windows provided under this Section.

Fabrication:

Aluminum sills shall be minimum 1/8 inch thick, extruded or break metal as dictated by size and installation condition requirements, of same alloy and finish as window members.

Provide sills in (1) piece at each window unit, except where required length exceeds standard manufactured lengths.

When more than (1) sill piece is required, provide concealed plates to make joint(s) watertight.

Provide end caps at each end of sill to provide surface to caulk against.

GLAZING

General Requirements:

Factory glaze window units.

Glass Labels: Label glass to show name of manufacturer and quality, type, and thickness. Do not remove label until glass has been inspected and approved.

Glazing Method: Supply sash with a continuous reusable vinyl wrap around glazing

channel. Glazing channel corners shall be factory welded.

FINISH OF ALUMINUM COMPONENTS

General:

Finish designations prefixed by AA meet the requirements of the system established by the Aluminum Association for designating aluminum finishes.

Finish all exposed aluminum components with finish specified.

Clear Anodic Finish: AA-M12C22A41, Architectural Class 1, clear anodic coating 0.7 mils minimum thickness, in accordance with AAMA 611.

Colored Anodic Finish: AA-M12C22A42/A44, Architectural Class 1, integrally colored or electrolytically deposited color coating 0.7 mils minimum thickness, in accordance with AAMA 611.

Color: Champagne, Light Bronze, Medium Bronze, Dark Bronze as shown on Drawings.

PART - EXECUTION

INSTALLATION OF WINDOW UNITS

Setting Windows:

Install windows plumb, level, and true, relative to building structure. Maximum variation from plumb and level shall not exceed 1/8 inch in 10 feet.

Mechanical fasteners, welded components, and hardware items shall not bridge thermal barriers or penetrate flashing materials or structural steel angles and lintels.

Protection:

Separating Dissimilar Metals:

Provide protection against galvanic action wherever dissimilar metals are in contact with one another. Provide protection by using alkali resistant bituminous paint, plastic separator insulating tapes, or similar protective measures subject to Architect’s approval. Use alkali-resistant bituminous paint for shop coating and field touch-up of steel connecting members, including anchors, clips, and other related components.

Protecting Aluminum From Cementitious Materials:

Insulate aluminum parts that come in contact with masonry, lime mortar, concrete or plaster by painting aluminum surfaces with a heavy bodied bituminous paint. Back paint aluminum sills with bituminous paint.

INSTALLATION OF SEALANTS

Examination:

Site Verification of Conditions: Examine joints to be sealed for construction defects which would adversely affect execution of work.

Masonry and Concrete Curing: Ensure that masonry and concrete have cured a minimum of 28 days.

Correction of Deficiencies: Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.

Preparation For Sealant Installation: Surface Preparation:

Prepare joints in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations. Surfaces to receive sealants shall be clean, dry, and free from dust, particles, loose aggregate, paint, corrosion, oil, grease, wax, tar, asphalt, mastic compounds, waterproofing agents, form release agents, or other contaminants. Dust masonry surfaces with a stiff brush and blow clean. Wipe down metal and glass surfaces with mineral spirits or similar approved solvents. Remove lacquer from caulking rabbets in aluminum.

Masking: Mask as necessary for a neat and acceptable application.

Priming: Prime surfaces to receive sealants in strict accordance with manufacturer=s recommendations.

Sealant Back-Up:

Where openings are more than 3/4 inch in depth, fill joint to within 3/4 inch of surface with back-up. Back-up shall be at least 1/4 inch thicker than width of joint opening, making certain that back-up is under compression after insertion. Exercise care while inserting back-up to maintain proper depth of caulking.

Sealant Installation:

Sealant Consistency:

Caulking sealants shall be of proper consistency to be readily worked and shall not be thinned or diluted in any manner. Heating, mixing, and application shall be in strict accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

Depth of Sealant: Install sealant to a depth equal to 1/2 joint width, but never less than 1/4 inch deep. Provide sealant back-up materials to provide proper depth of sealant where necessary. Back-up materials shall be at least 1/4 inch thicker than width of joint opening, making certain that back-up is under compression after insertion. Exercise care while inserting back-up to maintain proper depth of sealant.

Installation Procedure: Install sealant with a caulking gun using proper nozzles. Use sufficient pressure to properly fill the joints with sealant to the back-up material. Tooling Sealant:

After joints have been completely filled, neatly tool to eliminate air pockets or voids and to provide a smooth, neat appearing finish in intimate contact with interfaces. After tooling, surface of sealant shall be free of ridges, wrinkles, sags, air pockets, and embedded impurities.

ADJUSTING

Adjust Operating Components:

Adjust operating sash and hardware to provide a weathertight installation and smooth operation.

Lubricate operating hardware and moving parts as recommended by window manufacturer.

CLEANING

Cleaning of Construction Area:

Remove construction debris and dirt as each window unit is completed.

Carry construction debris out of building. Do not throw debris out of windows.

Leave work completely clean inside and out and ready for use by Owner without further cleaning.

Cleaning of Window Members:

Promptly after installation of each window unit, remove dirt, stains, misplaced caulking, and other foreign materials which could cause damage to finishes, from both interior and exterior exposed window and adjacent surfaces.

Cleaning of Glass:

At completion of work and before final acceptance by Owner, clean both interior and exterior surfaces of window glass installed under this Contract.

Remove labels on glass, except certification or manufacturer=s labels.

Panes of glass shall be left unscratched and uncracked, free from rattles and tight in glazing bead.

Replace scratched, cracked, broken or imperfect glass.

Glass not tight in glazing beads shall be reglazed.

Cleaning Methods: Use materials and methods employed in cleaning window units and glass which are recommended by window and glass manufacturer and do not cause defacement of Work.

Cleaning at Caulking: As work progresses, immediately clean materials adjacent to joints by

mechanical means or with solvents as recommended by sealant manufacturer to eliminate evidence of soiling or damage to adjacent surfaces.

PROTECTION

Protection of Installed Windows:

Protect installed windows during subsequent phases of the work to prevent damage by scratches, stains, discoloration, or other causes.

Damage to window or glass surfaces caused by subsequent construction operations shall be remedied at Contractors expense.
