Windemere Riders 4-H Club Supports Youth Benefit Horse Show For the past seventeen years, a group of youth in Jacksonville has raised money to adopt local families in need at Christmas time. The youth raise the money, purchase the gifts, wrap the gifts, and deliver them to the families. The show will take place on April 2, at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center and is for riders of any experience level. There will be a drawing with several great prizes. For each place you get throughout the show, first through sixth, you will get an entry in the drawing. There will also be high point prizes. The prizes for the drawing and high points include a saddle donated by Windcatcher Ranch, a belt buckle donated by Windemere Equestrian Center, halters with matching leads from Sun Horse Tack, and horse grooming products. Information such as the show schedule and forms along with information regarding pre-entry and costs will be posted very soon at Youth Benefit Horse Show. Pre-Entries greatly appreciated!! Show off Your Skills and Talents at Duval 4-H County Events Held During the Council Meeting Come share your talents, skills and knowledge at the 2011 Duval 4-H County Events will be held Monday, April 4, 6:00 PM at the Extension Office. County Events is the competitive opportunity for 4-H members to present speeches, demonstrations or illustrated talks, posters, talent performances or Fashion Modeling before a panel of judges and earn the opportunity to advance to district and state contests, for those who meet the age requirements.

2011 Bradford County Camp Counselor Training If you are 13-18 years old, join us! Duval County 4-H members that want to serve as 4-H Camp Cherry Lake Councilors are encouraged to attend this very educational activity to be held, April 21, July 7, at 6 PM, at the Bradford County Extension Office. An overnight training will be held June 10-11 with more information to come closer to the event. Duval County will provide transportation for its members on a first come basis. Get Involved With 4-H Day at the Capitol Florida 4-H will make itself known at the State Capital in Tallahassee on April 27. Each year 4-H members from across the state meet at the state capital for 4-H Day at the Capital. In the past Duval 4-H members have had a chance to meet with some of our state representatives. Register Now For 4-H Camp Cherry Lake Now is the time to register for a fun-filled 4-H Camp Cherry Lake week, July 18-22, 2011 at Camp Cherry Lake in Madison County, Florida. Campers, ages 8-12 years old, will have an exciting week of outdoor recreation and educational activities planned for them this summer. The base cost of camp is $210. The Duval County 4-H Foundation will sponsor a $65 scholarship to a limited number of individuals that have been enrolled as a Duval 4-H Member (including Junior Master Gardener and 4-H School Enrichment programs) by April 1, 2010. To request the scholarship, please complete the scholarship section on the form. Members that qualify for free or reduced school lunch and complete the lunch application form prior to the deadline are eligible for a $29.64 camp fee refund. Duval is allowed one senior and one intermediate team; with no entry fee.

Camp Cherry Lake Scholarships The Duval County Council has been working very hard selling earrings to fund camp scholarships for all campers and Jr. Counselors. The money will be evenly divided among all camp registrants that have paid their camp deposit of $25 and have turned in their registration forms by April 1. The exact amount of that scholarship will be determined at that time based on the number of registrants and total money raised. by Emily Stutsman, Duval County Council President

Win Money at the Soil and Water Conservation Speech Contest The Duval County Soil and Water Conservation Board is sponsoring the Joe B. Forshee, Jr. Natural Resources Conservation Speech Contest on Wednesday, April 13, 4:00 PM at the Duval County Extension Office. The registration deadline is April 8. The speech must be entitled “What Is the Economic Impact of Florida Forests?” The contest is open to students in grades 6-12, and the speech length is 6 to 8 minutes. First place wins $100.00; second place $ 50.00; and third place $ 25.00. The first place winner will advance to area competition. Do You Know How To Teach Photography To Youth? Photography is the most popular 4-H project in the U. S and we have had a big increase in photography projects in Duval 4-H program. Photography Project Leader training will be offered that will give you the skills and knowledge to teach 4-H members the Photography Basics. We will meet on Mondays starting April 11 - May 16, 11:00 AM-1:00 PM. Participants are required to have a digital camera, and do weekly homework assignments (about 1-2 hours a week). Duval County 4-H Foundation Annual Seafood Dinner Planned Get your tickets for the Annual Seafood Dinner from a Duval County 4-H Foundation member today! Agriculture Literacy Day Scheduled for April 26 The eighth annual Florida Agriculture Literacy Day is scheduled for Tuesday, April 26. The Florida Agriculture in the Classroom, Inc. invites Florida agriculture industry volunteers to read its newest storybook to elementary school children. Volunteers will read a book to students about different careers related to Florida agriculture. You will receive books, lesson packets and bookmarks and other goodies for students; they will be distributed beginning in March. Duval 4-H Foundation Partners With THE PLAYERS Championship Duval County 4-H Foundation is participating in the 2011 PLAYERS Championship Birdies for Charity program. Money raised will benefit the Duval County Junior Master Gardener Program. This unique community-based fundraising initiative is held in conjunction with THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass, May 9-15. Put the 2011 Area B Horse Show on Your Calendar The 2011 Area B Horse Show will be held May 20-21 at the Clay County Fair Grounds.

4-H Wild World of Nature Summer Camp will be Fun!!! The 4-H Wild World of Nature Camp is for kids ages 8 to 10 and will be held June 13 to 16, 9 AM - 12:30 PM at the Mandarin Garden Club, Loretto Rd. Campers will; eat like a bug, grow a seed upside down, make your own paper, design an insect and a habitat, make a camouflage mask, adopt a worm, and much more. You’ll also build a science kit for home explorations. Working with 4-H volunteers, you’ll see the world around you in a whole new way. “4-H Fun at the Fair” Day Camp Hosted The fair is more than Cotton Candy and Carnival Rides! Have seen kids at the fair or in the newspaper, competing in contests, winning trophies, ribbons, prizes and $money$? You can learn how to successfully compete in these contests by attending the 4-H Fun at the Fair Day Camp that will be held June 14, 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM, at the Extension Office at, 1010 North McDuff Ave., Jacksonville. Anyone ages: 8-18 are welcome to attend; non 4-H members are welcome. These hands on training workshops will prepare campers to compete in the following contests: Poultry Judging, Horticulture Judging, Livestock Judging, and Consumer Choices. This Day Camp is sponsored by the Duval County Council 4-H Executive Board. The cost is $10 which includes fun, games, learning materials, snacks and lunch. Enter the Dairy Farmers Filmmaking Contest The Fuel Up to Play 60 filmmaking contest is supported by the Dairy Farmers, Inc and Florida 4-H. Cinematography is one of today’s fastest growing industries in the world; however, it is also one of the hardest industries to be successful in. If you think you have a love for video production, join the Florida 4-H/Dairy Farmers Filmmaking Contest. The contest is open to youth, ages 8 – 18, enrolled in a 4-H club in Florida. Mystery Trip The Duval County Council voted to donate $200 to fund the Mystery Trip for all Gold and Emerald Clover Awards Winners according to Emily Stutsman, Duval County Council President. This includes Junior, Intermediate, and Senior winners. County Council wants to encourage you to complete your project books and Clover Award requirements which are due June 1. You won't want to miss this opportunity!

Duval 4-H Recognition Night Moved To June 2011 In order to increase participation in the annual Duval 4-H Recognition Night it has been moved to Thursday, June 9, 2011.

4-H Project Volunteer Training and State Committees Scheduled A new statewide Dog, Poultry and Rabbit Project Volunteer training is scheduled for June 10-12, at 4-H Camp Ocala. The goal for both adult and youth volunteers are to provide training for poultry, rabbit and dog project, as well as organize statewide project development committees for each species. If you are interested in being a part of any of these three committees contact Bill Heltemes as he is recruiting volunteers to give leadership.

Learn About Science at the 4-H CloverBud Day Camp The4-H CloverBud Day Camp is for kid’s ages5 to 7, and it will be held June 15 to 17, 9 AM - 12:00 Noon, at the Duval County Extension Office. Campers will learn to: be a Wacky Scientist, create & grow a plant, form your own tornados, make slime, learn how chicks hatches and so much more! Add the State 4-H Horse Events to Your Calendars! The State 4-H Horse Events will be held June 18 in Gainesville. The contest will include; Horse Individual & Team Demonstrations, Horse Public Speaking, Horse Quiz Bowl, and Horseman of the Year Interviews. These contests are held separately from Congress because they qualify youth to a SE Regional event that is usually at the same time as Congress. Stay Away From the 4-H Forensic Entomology Camp The 4-H Forensic Entomology Camp is for kid’s ages11 to 15, and will be held June 20 to 23, 9 AM - 2:00 PM at the Mandarin Garden Club, Loretto Rd. Campers will explore the world of Crime Scene Investigation through Forensic Entomology. Youth will have a hands-on, up-close look at how insects help solve crimes. Students will participate in a mock crime scene, learn to identify insects, begin their own insect collection and more. This camp is not for the squeamish. Check Out the 4-H Babysitting Savvy Day Camp The 4-H Babysitting Savvy Day Camp is for kid’s ages11 to 15, and will be held June 28 to 30, 9 AM - 3:00 PM at the Duval Extension Office. Campers will learn how to care and have fun with young children, while being attentive to safety issues and learning the business aspects of running their own business. Campers will receive First Aid Training from the American Red Cross and be certified in infant and child CPR. Learn a New Skill at Sewing Day Camp Youth, age 10 to 18, may enroll in sewing classes this summer. Week 1 is, July 12 to 15. Week 2 is, July 19 to 22, and classes run from 9 am to 3:30 pm. Beginners will learn to operate a sewing machine, sew pajama bottoms and create small projects such as an autograph bear and pillow. Intermediates students will be able to choose from a variety of projects, such as pillows, bags and purses, or ornaments. Advanced students may choose a garment to construct and bring their own materials, but the pattern needs prior review from the instructor. A 4-H exhibit and Fashion Show is set for the final afternoon each week. The cost is $40 and check should be made out to FCS Advisory Committee. Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair Horse Show Earlier Sept 17 The Greater Jacksonville Fair will be hosting the 2011 4-H and FFA Horse Show on September 17, at the Equestrian Center in Jacksonville. 4-H Members Must Be Enrolled To Be Counted As budgets get tight, it becomes more important that all Duval County 4-H members get counted. The Duval 4- H membership number is determined by the active members enrolled in the 4-H Online Enrollment System: https://florida.4honline.com. Unfortunately many 4-H Clubs do not have their members in the system. It has been estimated that as many as 25% of our 4-H membership is not being counted. 4-H Leaders and families are encouraged to double check the 4-H Online Enrollment System to make sure all current members have an active status in the system. If not your 4-H membership is not being counted, please contact your leader for help.

Duval 4-H Summer Day Camps Announced This Summer Duval 4-H will be offering some new and old 4-H Day Camps. The camps will include Cooking, Sewing, Baby Sitting, Entomology, Clover Buds, Nature and more. Florida 4-H Offers 2011 Summer Open Enrollment Camps Florida 4-H offers the following overnight camps through out the state including: Senior Camp, Gator Adventures, Marine Camp, and Shooting Sports & Sport Fishing Camp. Florida 4-H Congress Participation Rule Changes During Florida 4-H Congress, individual 4-H’ers can participate in one demonstration OR public speaking event AND either Share-the-Fun or one judging/other event (i.e. Fashion Revue), as long as schedule permits. Youth at county and district levels can be encouraged to participate in both demonstrations and judging or other events. 4-Hers may compete in contests and be a council delegate.
