Annual Report of the Heidelberg Cricket Club in its 152nd year 2 www.heidelbergcricketclub.com PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Again I write with the disappointment of losing an A-Grade final, this year in genuine circumstances after an ordinary performance when pressure was applied.

We cannot dance around the fundamental issues and that is at times and in some big games we falter when tested mentally. I believe this largely comes down to preparation and it seemed that immediately after the game and later that night at the club meeting that it was agreed and widely acknowledged the players let themselves down by a lack of application and commitment to deliver the club goals.

That is all I will say on the matter as it is critical to learn from what mistakes have been made, correct them and look forward.

I congratulate David Roberts in his role as Second X1 Captain and for bringing home the club’s first premiership in that division since 1991/92.

Also to John Hand and his U/15 Gold team, a highly talented group of young men who applied themselves so well during the season and on the final stage when it counted.

Other highlights included;

 A terrific personal season with bat and ball by our Captain Brad Grindal  Brad being named Captain of the Team of the Year by opposing Club Presidents.  A vibrant and highly successful junior program superbly and comprehensively managed by John Hand featuring nine teams plus a Milo development program  A very healthy off-field performance with an operating profit in the vicinity $12,000  A strong bank balance of approximately $21,000  The capital purchase of a bowling machine to assist players with skill development.  The two flags mentioned above but also finals appearances by all our junior teams excluding Kookaburras who don’t play finals.  The emergence of young players into senior ranks and performing at those levels  The fun and vitality that Sam Karinikos brings to the Fourth X1 and the club.  The fantastic season enjoyed by Craig Ladd with the bat and his leadership and commitment to young players in the Third X1  The introduction of ‘Cricket Training Scholarships’ a fantastic initiative that reflects what fundamental role the clubs plays within the local community.

Areas where we must improve include;

 A complete change of attitude and application to training and to preparation the day before a match and on match days.  A lack of understanding of what is involved in actually running the club. I believe at times there is an apathetic attitude to the club and its environs. The simplest things such as refusal to put rubbish in bins or even little things like flicking cigarette butts over the front deck demonstrates a lack of care for the facility. All members ought to treat the place as they would their own house. If we can get that attitude going, the place will always have a much better feel.

There are many people to thank for their roles in addition to those mentioned above. On the field we have benefited greatly from the leadership shown by David Roberts as Coach of the club. Robbo has decided to ease out of cricket gently and we wish him well. Few people are aware that Robbo is the winner of FIVE past competition medals in various grades. We look forward to the stories over the drip tray as he remains an integral part of the fabric of our club.

Speaking of fabric we say an on field farewell too to Steve Cashen who has decided the pursuit or the little round ball is better than the red one. Cash we all owe you an enormous amount gratitude for the contribution you have made to the club over your 12 years with us. Annual Report of the Heidelberg Cricket Club in its 152nd year 3 www.heidelbergcricketclub.com Steve and Mark Favrin have decided to take a breather from the game and we also thank them for their contributions to the club. Steve in particular has enjoyed a remarkable tenure at Heidelberg winning 5 club championship awards.

Off the field I thank Bluey for his enormous work in running and maintaining our largest revenue centre – the bar. Huge job and he does it so well. Thanks to those who did serve on the committee in various capacities to help run the club. It’s your club and the more people that chip in and help out the better.

I thank Handy and all the junior coaches, managers, scorers, assistants who make the junior component of the club tick.

This year the club will change. The success we have become accustomed to may not flow as freely. The departures of such experienced players will have an impact.

The winds of opportunity are blowing strongly across Warringal.

And lastly on behalf of Clare, Emma, Hayley and Lachlan I thank members of the club for the incredible and much appreciated support of me and my family in what was a difficult and trying year with my sister Shelley passing away in February after an eight year battle with cancer.

Highlights

Annual Report of the Heidelberg Cricket Club in its 152nd year 7 www.heidelbergcricketclub.com COACH’S REPORT

What a season it could have been! The aim was a first X1 flag, get experience into as many as possible in A grade and bring along the youth through the 2nd and 3rd & 4th X1 during the year. The year was fulfilled in many ways including 1st X1 & 2nd X1 premierships in the One Day Competition and the 2nd X1 premiers in the season proper.

Progress in many players notably Tom Keating, Sachin Anand, Brad Nihill, Andy Edwards, Nic Biscontin, Justin Powick, Dan Kelly, Mitch Hand & Pat Milson amongst many who showed they have what it takes to help win games of cricket for this club.

With the club well led by Brad Grindal as first X1 captain the side shaped up well winning important games right through. A great win in the semi saw us through to another final, but unfortunately we came up short on the day. Super years by the leader Bradley both with bat and ball, the number 1 bowler in this comp Damian Noonan saw us placed well in most games! As a club we all need to take stock now and make sure we get behind the appointed leaders and push hard to regain the mantle we all desperately seek. It is now at the point of time for the likes of Adam Scambler & Anoop Singh to make a mark on the team and the club as leaders!

The seconds were brilliantly led throughout the year and had a super year collecting the premierships in both the regular comp and the one day season. Exciting to see many of the younger players mixed in with more senior types in Banger, Crogga, Chappy make a mark on the season. I’m very proud of the efforts of all who played in the side and lets hope the successful push to have a strong 2nd side continues as this help the 1st X1 immensely.

Craig Ladd had a great season as leader of the 3rd X1, himself making over 500 runs. Having played many younger juniors during the year along with a smattering of experience saw Laddy drive his side to some fine victories. The progress of Nick Biscontin in the early part of the year Craig should take much credit for. Along with Dan Kelly, Pat Milsom, Marcus Macleod and Mitch Hand, the attitude and learning provided by Laddy was superb! Well done Craig.

Finally to the side led by Samuel. Once again a super effort from Sam who week-in week-out had to battle with numbers, massive changes and the like! Throughout this he managed to win 4 games and enjoy some very fine efforts form many of his players! Once again the ability we all have to get the junior members participating is just such sound practice. And to have such a fine leader to pull it all together in Sam is a credit indeed to himself. Good luck in the coming year Sammy!

Also I would like to thank John Hand who is a tireless worker in the club and leads the junior side of it with expertise! To manage the department and coach a side is greatly appreciated Handy by all and sundry. Once again we enjoyed success with the U15 boys getting up for a premiership. Well done to all coaches and managers during the year!

Finally many thanks to the committee led by Dean for all the tireless work that goes into making a cricket club tick! It certainly has been an enjoyment to be part of such a well driven club.

And lastly thanks to Brad for his efforts and help to set up and lead the club from the front. Nothing comes easily and Brad has shown he is a player of great ability and once again had a sensational year wining the club championship! Time to get behind the leaders now and make this upcoming year the year YOU improve and the year YOU make a difference to the side!

Well…..another disappointing end to the season, only this time we didn’t have the weather to blame…we weren’t good enough when put under pressure! To Banyules credit they had 3 good players and they all performed on the BIG STAGE! hence the outcome went their way.

Having said that there were a number of positives to come out of the season, those being:

 Seb Nicolosi - playing his first game in A Grade as a 14 year old and looking right at home against the eventual premiers.  Justin Powick – played a handful of games in A Grade and played his part in getting us over the line a couple of times.  Sachin Anand – came along in leaps and bounds throughout the season under the tutoring of Robbo, finished up playing A grade also and more than held his own.  Andy Edwards – Really starting to develop into a good allrounder, with some work over the pre season will develop into a great A grade player.

To all the other boys who represented the HCC in A grade this year I thank you for your efforts and at times your patience towards my inexperience in the captaining role, something of which I am continually working on.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the efforts, support, guidance, you name it this bloke has given me over the years….Cash, you are not only a great cricketer, leader, I rate you as one of my best mates and a bloke I could turn to with anything that arose. It won’t be the same out in the middle on a Saturday without you there mate and NO ONE could ever replace you. Thanks for everything mate and I wish you all success in whatever you do in life after cricket….absolute champion.

To a few other senior guys in Russell/Rhino/Noons, I thank you for your support out in the middle (even though we have our moments!!) I have learnt a huge amount from you guys and look forward to passing this onto future generations of HCC cricketers.

Robbo…I thank you immensely for the last couple of years, you have achieved great success on & off the field and I congratulate you for this, to finish with a flag is probably a fitting result for someone who has given so much to not only HCC but the HDCA in general…you will be remembered by all David as a character of the game and a very astute judge of character!!

Once again I would like to thank Snigga….just one more year mate!! And to his replacement in Bluey, always there to fill a void whether it be scoring, tapping kegs, serving behind the jump..you name it Bluey does it, thanks mate!

In closing I am sure you guys remember sitting down stairs after the final, I for one do not want that feeling again anytime soon and we are the ones who can change that. Gone are the days of the LAZY attitude….The Bergers are on the move forward with a new breed of cubs.

Looking forward to catching up with all in the pre season and setting the new guidelines for the coming year.

Brad Grindal.

Annual Report of the Heidelberg Cricket Club in its 152nd year 13 www.heidelbergcricketclub.com Annual Report of the Heidelberg Cricket Club in its 152nd year 14 www.heidelbergcricketclub.com Second Grade Captain's Report

After a few seasons of knocking on the door a premiership at last came our way! And what a year it was many highlights along the way and much progress made by many that will hold the club in good stead for many years to come.

The year started with what was to become a common theme, this being a poor batting effort! In the second game we played Greensborough in what was to be the first of 4 wins against them for the year saw us win our first game. These first 2 games saw good efforts from Dan Kelly and Sachin Anand both playing their first games in the second X1. With the younger members making solid contributions along with the more senior members in Balcombe, Stevens, Earl and ‘recruit’ Chapman we saw the side sitting well placed at the Xmas break. Prior to the break a major blow to the side when the announcement of the retirement of Justin Mallon was announced to a packed club rooms! Justin has make an indelible contribution to the side ala John Frazier over the last few year sand will be sadly missed! This however enabled the promotion of another U17 in Nick Biscontin who not only held his position but went on to be the winner of the bowling average for the year! Another highlight was the partnership between Steve Cashen 110 and Andy Edwards 80n.o. that put on 197 runs V Rosanna. Such a valuable lesson in batting for Andy will no doubt fast track him in the years to come. Solid efforts from Brad Nihill, Crogga, Duke, Chappy and Creaky got us over the line along with bowling efforts from Banger, Sachin and Chappy. After the break we gained a keeper and the side took on the shape of one that would challenge. Great batting from Smouty, Tom who had both come back from the 1st X1 and we were away to more wins and a top of the ladder finish! Along the way we qualified to defend the 1 day flag and promptly handed a strengthened Greensborough side a thumping thanks to Rowdy, The Beak and Andy bowling well and a superb innings from Banger and Brad Nihill and Creakdog getting us home.

Fast track to semi final V Rosanna and a comprehensive win saw us get over the line 4 down! All of the bowlers did a great job and then Tommy, Duke and Andy got us over the line with great innings! Unfortunately due to the weather Matt Earl had who was our best bat during the year, had to withdraw with work commitments and was replaced by another junior in Brad Nihill.

Grand final saw us bat first off to a good start through Smout and Banger, then collapse until a fighting last wicket stand between Sachin and Bicky saw us scramble to 135. We all knew if we bowled to our potential we were right in this game. At the end of the day they were 0-10 a game still to be won. Day 2 saw a great effort from the team who fought tooth and nail to win a well deserved premiership. Chappy bowled superbly to claim 5-17 of 20 0vers and Banger also chimed in with 3 to dismiss the SLIME for 90! To play 6 guys under 20yrs of age was great for the long term future. Well done to all that played and also Matt Earl who was indeed part of the win!

Finally my thanks to Crogga for his help all year, to Dean and the committee and to Brad Grindal for all his help in making this side a winner!

Many of the younger guys who played such a big part will no doubt be playing much bigger roles in the 1st X1 next year!

Nothing like playing in a flag you little beauty!!!!

Annual Report of the Heidelberg Cricket Club in its 152nd year 20 www.heidelbergcricketclub.com Fourth Grade Captain's Report

After a moderate season in 2007/2008, I felt confident that we could challenge for a finals berth this season, especially with the talented crop of juniors that had played senior cricket, and those who were keen to taste senior cricket for the first time. There were also some excellent senior players who still had the skill and desire to perform well and play finals. Once again we were thereabouts, falling short of the four. We produced some excellent performances in some of the one-dayers, but were not able to back that up in the two-day matches. My favourite wins for the season included chasing down 250 runs in 40 overs against Greensborough Green, and compiling a massive 316, again in 40 overs, against Banyule. In the end, we finished sixth, a good result considering we had no wins in the two day matches.

Once again we had a large roster of players through the season, playing 30 different players, fourteen of which were juniors. Of these, 8 played senior cricket for the first time. There were many good performances through the season, John Gilham was the top run scorer with 344 runs from just 7 innings, at an average of 57.33, including a marvellous unbeaten 127 to steer us home against Greensborough Green, and 91 against Bellfield in a 150 run partnership with Brett Grindal. John had the highest score, with the other century makers being Rajat Singh, a quickfire 125, and Calvin Plowright making 104, both in the same match and producing the other century partnership of the season of 134. Calvin, Raj, Brett, Phil Edwards, and Marcel Pamio also made some great half centuries through the year.

Phil Edwards took the most wickets, 11, at an average of 17.5. He bowled consistently all season, with a best of 2/28. Best bowling performance came from Daniel McMeniman, 3/12, in his first senior game. Consistent performers through the season were Andrew Vendramini (10 wkts at 38, best of 3/45), Lenny Lambroglou (9 wkts at 32, best of 3/29), Jackson Byrne (8 wkts at 23, best of 2/6), and Jack Gilham (7 wkts at 31, best of 3/41). Three of these bowlers were playing their first senior season, a good sign of the depth of talent at the club.

Despite having some horrible outright losses, and discovering that most of the senior players had no idea about the LBW rule, it was a very enjoyable season of cricket. The spirit of the players was always good, we had a great deal of fun out on the field, whilst always competing hard to secure wins. It was again an absolute pleasure to captain the side, and spend time in the middle with great upcoming juniors and a fantastic bunch of seniors, and looking forward to doing it all again. Bring on 2009/2010!

Annual Report of the Heidelberg Cricket Club in its 152nd year 23 www.heidelbergcricketclub.com Junior Manager's Report

Another successful season over with 5 out of our six sides making the finals with 3 progressing through to the Grand Finals. Unfortunately both our U17 Green and U13 Black teams lost in the last over but our U15 Gold team cruised to a 9 wicket win over arch rivals East Ivanhoe Saints.

This was the first season the HDCA have moved to odd-year age groups (U13, U15, U17) with the intention of allowing kids to play junior cricket for an extra year and make the transition to senior cricket a lot easier, and in the long run retaining a lot more juniors in the game.

As a club we are delighted to have had such great junior coaches and helpers this year and we would like to thank them for all their work and the time they gave to the kids. These were : Rhett Walker\ Brett Smout (U17 Gold) Russell Kelly (U17 Green) John Hand (U15 Gold) Graeme Crispe\ Ange Perillo (U15 Green) Steve Cashen (U13 Black) Mark Beers (U13 Yellow)

I would also like to thank the president, Dean Turner, and the rest of the committee for making my job easier, and also the senior players who have been great with the kids when they have played in the senior teams.

Individually several kids play representative cricket at various levels :

Daniel Cookson, Mitchell Hand (North East Falcons Dowling Shield U16) Sachin Anand, Nicholas Biscontin (HDCA U16) Michael Pierce (Ivanhoe Hatch U15) Justin Powick, Dan Kelly (Preston Hatch U15) Marcus Macleod, Seb Nicolosi (North East Falcons U14) Stephen Edwards (HDCA U14) Jacob Smith (HDCA U14)

In addition to this Dan Kelly won the U17 Green bowling award (17 wickets at 6.71), Justin Powick U15 Batting award (334 runs at 167), and James Welsh U13 Gold bowling award (10 wickets at 10.8). Well done to all these kids making the reps sides and to those winning the comp averages.

Roll on 2009/2010!!

Annual Report of the Heidelberg Cricket Club in its 152nd year 24 www.heidelbergcricketclub.com U/17 Gold Coach's Report

The U/17's gold started the year at DeWinton Park against rivals Rosanna, with our boys struggling for numbers and only having 8 players for our first game. This resulted in a dissapointing loss and not a good start to the year.

It didnt get much better in round 2 with another poor effort against Greensborough when we were rolled for 80.

Our first win finally came in round 3 against reigning premiers Banyule and the boys started to bond better with the results showing. Seb Nicolosi was constantly amongst the runs with the bat whilst Sachin Anand was taking regular wickets with the ball.

Bad weather and several washouts meant our boys went into the Christmas break sitting second last but only 6 points out of the top 4, meaning 2 wins were required from our final 2 games against top of the ladder Greensborough (undefeated at that stage), and reigning premier Banyule.

With what looked to be a tough ask ahead, the boys showed great character and gave Greensborough their first loss of the year with a fantastic win, meaning a final round showdown against Banyule with the winner to make the finals, and the loser to miss out. After losing the toss and having to bowl, the boys rolled through the Bears to have them all out for 75 with a finals spot all but guarenteed. We comfortably chased down there score resulting in us finishing in 4th position, which was a tremendous effort considering the situation we were in at the mid-season break.

Coming up against Greensborough in the semi final, the boys were very confident we could repeat the result we gave them 2 rounds earlier. After winning the toss and batting, things started off fairly positively when we were 2/54 at the 15th over, however things changed dramatically with wickets falling left right and centre. The only shining light was Anthony Cocco who made a well compiled 33 whilst the team was all out for 90. Greensborough had little trouble chasing the total, leaving our boys with a dissapointing end to the year.

Seb Nicolosi took out the batting award, whilst spinner Sachin Anand comfortably won the bowling average. On a whole it was a pretty disappointing year considering the quality type of players we had in the side, but with most of the boys bottom age and still another year in the 17s, next season should prove a lot more successfull.

Annual Report of the Heidelberg Cricket Club in its 152nd year 26 www.heidelbergcricketclub.com U/17 Green Coach's Report

Incredibly, our season ended with a Grand Final defeat by one run and one wicket on the very last ball of the year!! I guess it would be easy to be disappointed with that and think that we fell at the last hurdle, but the fact is we played at very close to 100% of our ability in that game & for most of the season. So we did not die wondering and we did achieve plenty, if not the ultimate prize.

Despite the loss the Grand Final produced some very notable performances and some guys proved to themselves that they have the technique and the temperament to perform under pressure. Add to that a dominant Semi-Final win with some other big performances and I have to say we had an excellent season.

As in past years our lack of batting depth caused us problems, but as always we bowled very well and easily had the most consistent and deepest attack in our competition. We had very little batting during the year due to a run of washouts every time we were due to bat and in the end that did not help the development of our batting depth.

Player highlights

Pat Millsom led our batting averages with a a solid average of 38 and made a brilliant 50 in the Semi Final. He always opened the batting and led from the front. Good aggressive batsmen, solid bowler and a brilliant fieldsmen adds up to a good package this guy is already closely watched by the Senior Captains.

Harrison Webb was our leading run scorer and capped that off with a magnificent 55* in the Grand Final. This happened because he has a tough competitive streak in him that he does not always show. H is also a very fine catcher close to wicket.

Dan Kelly led our bowling all year and was easily our highest wicket taker, he also captained the side with some style and got a fine double in our winning semi with 4/9 and 26*. Dan showed good progress over the season, the coach was quite happy with him !

Mike Wayman was a great addition to our side. Mike is a great team player who is happy to bay anywhere and changed some games with his hard hitting. Mike was also a key bowler who bowls a heavy ball and bowls very straight. He proved to be our most economical bowler over the season.

Pat Renehan had a great season. He went forward in leaps and bounds and peaked with runs in the finals as well as 3/18 in the big one which turned the game back our way when the game looked lost. He also won us a game with the bat at Rosanna. Clearly he is good under pressure, and his excellent fielding completes a polished all round package.

Peter Lambroglou showed everyone in the Grand Final what he is made of. He held us together for over 10 overs when losing his wicket meant curtains and applied himself superbly. He made 14*, but that was the most valuable 14 he will ever make in the circumstances. By the season end, Peter actually had only been out once an averaged 44. Peter is also a very reliable bowler

Nick Langdon is a punishing lower order batsman who is a clean striker of the ball. He also kept wickets for us and snared some fantastic catches.

Len Lambroglou as always contributed in all aspects of the game. Bats in the top order, bowls with the new ball and fields very well, Len always makes a contribution somewhere is every game. I think his exposure in 3rd and 4th grade last season will bring big results next season.

Jack Gilham bowled some great spells including a valuable 2/16 in the Semi Final and is a bowler we turn to when we need wickets. He also got a career high with the bat (in 4th Grade) and is another who will benefit greatly from that experience last season.

Brendan Moncrieff was as entertaining as ever. His keeping was ever reliable and his clean ball striking always comes in handy in our middle order. Annual Report of the Heidelberg Cricket Club in its 152nd year 27 www.heidelbergcricketclub.com Jesse Lamb bowls fast, bats fast, plays fast. In the Grand Final he really showed great application in his partnership with Peter. That partnership was one of the highlights of the season. Jesse is a dangerous bowler & is a wicket taker.

As in previous years, I got totally spoiled by the parent group in this team. Surely no team has ever been better supported than this one.

One of the reasons this team was easy to coach and manage was due to fact that they have parents that supported me and the boys all year & it really makes a difference.

Trophies

Batting – Pat Millsom Average 38.33

Bowling – Dan Kelly Average 6.70 which also won the Competition trophy.

Most improved – Pat Renehan - the easiest selection in the history of most improved. Should be renamed amazingly improved

Coaches Trophy – Peter Lambroglou – Great kid, great temperament. I wish I gave him more chances during the year.

Annual Report of the Heidelberg Cricket Club in its 152nd year 29 www.heidelbergcricketclub.com U/15 Gold Coach's Report

After winning every game the previous year there was always the worry that we might get a bit complacent and not work on our game as we should do. This became evident after a few weeks where our training let us down and on game days whilst we kept winning we never fired on all cyclinders. Sure enough we eventually lost a game and bowled and fielded as bad as I have ever seen with this set of kids. However this kick started our kids into action and in the next game we bowled the best we had during the season to bowl out Banyule for just over 50 runs, and then we passed their score in the 6th or 7th over as our top order batsmen pulverized their bowling.

This was a good lead up to the finals and we maintained our moment with another great bowling display to bowl out Greensborough for 138 (Mitch Hand 4/11, Marcus Macleod 3/30) and passed their score without losing a wicket ( Mitch Hand 50 ret no, Justin Powick 50 no , Daniel Cookson 25no).

For the Grand Final we were up against our great rivals East Ivanhoe Saints who were unbeaten on top of the table. We lost the toss and they batted and again we bowled tightly and fielded very well apart from a couple of dropped catches. We bowled them out for 151 with Marcus Macleod taking a fantastic 6/18! In reply we really knuckled down and worked extremely hard to get off to a solid start. Mitch Hand and Justin Powick put on 63 before Mitch was bowled for a hard earned 25. In came Daniel Cookson and after a slow start took command with Justin and gradually the runs came freely and we passed their score for the loss of 1 wicket with Daniel bringing up his 50 with the last ball. Justin had retired with 51 to cap off a great season.

This was a great finals effort to win so comprehensively and only lose 1 wicket in the 2 games. Apologies to those kids who missed out on batting…although I think some of them were quite happy not to! However all 12 kids played a part in getting to the finals and winning them – fantastic effort by all of them.

What can I say about these kids – 2 Premierships in 2 years and have only lost 1 game !

From my coaching point of view I would like to thank the kids for the season – though they drove me mad on more than one occasion. Also I would like to thank Jane Gough for entering the scores in My Cricket, for Shane Cookson, Pete Nolan, Steve Begemen for scoring, for Ian McMenamin and John Macled for umpiring, and all the other parents for supporting the kids.

Cheers,

John Hand U/15 Gold Coach

Annual Report of the Heidelberg Cricket Club in its 152nd year 31 www.heidelbergcricketclub.com U/15 Green Coach's Report

Well it was a season to forget, we lost 2 games to bad weather leaving only 6 completed matches for the season, not enough cricket for our up and coming stars of the future. The boys were up against it from the start with only 10 regular players committing for the season. Many thanks should go to John Hand and his team for lending us players where possible.

After such a good 2007/08 season Angelo and myself had hoped for a similar performance, but lady luck refused to shine, to loose the toss and field with eight or nine players on several occasions or to bat when only six boys present at the start of the game and nobody keen to open the innings makes for a bad recipe. To the boys credit they smiled all the way through the season and I think each player had at least one outstanding performance to tell mum and dad.

Season Highlights. Total Score. Highest Score. Best Bowling. Oliver Welsh. 139. 53no. 1 for 4. Steve Edwards. 102. 53no. 2 for 1. Mitchell Crispe. 97. 25. 1 for 1. Jordan Perillo. 88. 26no. 1 for 13. Hopefully we can look towards the 2009/10 season with excitement and stronger player numbers, better weather and some solid individual performances and team performances.

Many thanks to the committee, the under 15 boys and all those who helped during the season.

Annual Report of the Heidelberg Cricket Club in its 152nd year 34 www.heidelbergcricketclub.com U/13 Yellow Coach's Report

Two even U 13 teams were selected by HCC Cricket guru Steve Cashen at the start of the season and many of the young cricketers returned from previous seasons together. Steve proved once again to be a very good judge as one team (Yellow) made the semi-finals and Steve’s team (Black) were Runners-up in a very close Grand Final.

Our first game of the year set the stage for a somewhat topsy-turvy season. We played Edinburgh away and were very happy with our efforts on the first day to get them all out for 95. On Day 2 we were cruising at 4/85 with ten overs to go, 7 overs later we were all out for 92. We were still shaking our heads an hour later wondering just what had happened to lose it from there.

We had certainly learnt that we had to finish off every game, we also learnt our bowling was reasonably good but that our batting needed to improve.

In the second round we beat the reigning premiers East Ivanhoe in wet conditions at Chelsworth. This was our best win of the year and showed what we could do when all players were concentrating and doing their best.

We played and won comfortably against the other East Ivanhoe team to keep up our good form.

The next 2 games were washed out on the 2nd day of play which was disappointing, particularly the game against our club mates – Heidelberg Black. We had made only 92 after 45 overs on the lush HCC outfield and knew we had our work cut out to get them out for less than 92 before the heavens opened for the 2nd week in a row.

We had a very comfortable one day win against Banyule to round out the year before the Christmas break.

We lost our first game after the break to West Ivanhoe after making a reasonable total and then struggling to bowl and field well enough against some enterprising batting.

In the last round we played Edinburgh again and needed to win to make the finals. We won in another close one to turn the tables on our first round nemesis.

We drew East Ivanhoe in the semi-final and were beaten soundly by a team whose bowling, batting, fielding and team work was superior to ours. They went on to win the Grand Final against Heidelberg Black in an exciting game the following week.

The boys were a great group to coach and they played some good cricket and showed improvement when their minds were on the job. I wish them all the best for the future.

Many thanks to the parents who helped out during the season. Brendan O’Dowd and Mark Wilson who helped out at training and at games. Tony Loton and all others who scored. Ross Cooper for entering the results each week. Mark Muscat, Chris Welsh, Michael Cauchi and Paul O’Connor who were able to help out when required.

Also many thanks to Steve Cashen, John Hand and Dean Turner for their support and assistance during the season.

Good luck to all for next season and the future.

Annual Report of the Heidelberg Cricket Club in its 152nd year 36 www.heidelbergcricketclub.com Kookaburra Gold Coach's Report

The Kookaburra grade is about developing very basic cricket and indeed motor skills of boys aged anywhere from 7 to 11.

This year we fielded three Kookaburra teams, under the names of Black, White and Yellow. We could have gone with two teams but it was felt that it was better to run with the bare 11 or 12 in each grade to ensure all the boys got an equal go.

This year I looked after the Heidelberg Yellow team which was made of the older boys who had played a year of Kookaburras the previous season.

I am not particularly interested in whether the boys win or lose at this level what is critical is what they learn and how they develop.

It was pleasing to see quite an improvement in their skill level and a deeper appreciation of the skills and intricacies of the game.

We have quite a way to go but we are getting there.

Next season most of these boys will play in what will be called the Kookaburra competition grade, a hybrid if you like of the current Kookaburra modifications and the sort of rules and conditions they will play under at u/13 level.

I would like to thank Lachlan Rewell who acted as our scorer for most of the games and Craig Stevens who also grabbed the pen on occasions.

I look forward to another great year next year.

Annual Report of the Heidelberg Cricket Club in its 152nd year 38 www.heidelbergcricketclub.com Kookaburra Green Coach's Report

As coach I had the great privilege of working with these boys, some of which played in the Heidelberg Tackers football team last year.

During the cricket season, all displayed great talent in the areas of batting, bowling and fielding. Great skills were displayed and in the most part all had great fun.

We won four games during the year, losing twice to West Ivanhoe and then narrowly losing to Heidelberg Yellow in the last game.

Two boys in particular showed exceptional talent and good all rounded skills in Brent Rodda and Ben Collins.

Special mentions to Mark Rodda as the chief scorer and Bob Butling, John Emmerson, Peter Bailey, Paul Daniel and Sharon Collins in their valued assistance during the season.

With the continuing support of good parents, our kids can enjoy ongoing success in the coming season.

Hope to see you all in season 2009/10 for another positive and productive cricket experience.

Annual Report of the Heidelberg Cricket Club in its 152nd year 39 www.heidelbergcricketclub.com Kookaburra White Coach's Report

Season 2008/09 was a fantastic year for our club with the arrival of 21 new players to our Kookaburra ranks - giving us a total of 37 boys. Such was the interest that the club was able to field two additional teams to the development competion. Dean and Gary Turner (no relation) volunteered to coach the 'Black' and 'Yellow' teams respectively and I was fortunate enough to take the reins of the 'White' team.

With only 2 of the 11 boys having previous cricket experience - other than Milo, the backyard or the schoolground - the season presented quite a few challenges, especially against some of the teams that used this grade as a stepping stone to the Test Match arena. To the boys credit they played out the entire season with the enthusiasm and spirit associated with our great club.

The improvement in all the boys was the obvious highlight of the season for myself . Although scores and results are irrelevant at this age, I'm sure the boys will point to the two fantastic ‘wins’ against Viewbank and Edinburgh. With both victories coming 'on the road', we may have to have a chat with the powers that be in order to schedule a few more away games for the coming season.

All the boys were an absolute pleasure to coach and I can honestly say that I did not have to say one word to any of the boys about their behaviour or sportsmanship throughout the entire season. These kids are the future of our club and I have no doubt that the character displayed by all of them throughout the season will ensure our on-going success and solidify our reputation as the premier cricket club in this region.

Finally, I would like to thank all the parents, family and friends who assisted me throughout the season and supported the boys - the efforts made my job that much easier.

Team Notations

In season 2008-09 the Heidelberg Cricket Club, in its 152nd year, fielded 4 senior teams and 9 junior teams. The club also hosted a MILO program for approximately 15 kids aged 5-9 years old.

In the seniors, the club’s 1st XI, 2nd XI, 3rd XI and 4th XI participated in the HDCA’s First, Second, Third and Fourth Grades respectively.

In the juniors, as a general guide, the club’s first year players in their age-group participated in the HDCA’s Green competition, whilst second year players competed in the Gold competition. For the U/13 team, we elected to participate in the HDCA’s Gold competition because it offered 2-day matches. The Kookaburra’s is for young players, generally under 10 years of age. No match results are recorded for the Kookaburras.

Additionally, the club once again conducted a ‘Milo Cricket’ program throughout the season. This 12 week program teaches children (aged 4 through 9) the skills of the game through various training drills and doesn’t involve a fixtured competition. In 2008-09, some 40 children participated in the HCC's Milo Cricket-Have-A-Go program which was managed by Craig Stevens, Renato Dintinosante and Tim James.
