Coromandel Classic 2017 COURSE LEGS, SUPPORT CREW NOTES & OTHER INFORMATION

 Please note this years event has changed

 The course will now run in reverse this Year due to restrictions on Pinnacles availability and change to Permit due to Rally car race going through Tapu Road on Saturday.

DAY 1 Leg 1: 30 km Cycle from Banks Street to Maratoto Road to Wires Road (Multisport & Duathlon) The day starts with a 30km cycle from Banks Street, Thames heading towards Maratoto. It is predominantly flat, but just like the Coast to Coast, beware of the head wind! Turning off form SH26 onto Maratoto Road you will head toward Wires Road and turn down and left to the Transition area.

SUPPORT CREW NOTES: • You must depart for Transition 1 towards Wires Road by 6:40am (20mins before race start) as the drive will take some time. • Allow 30 minutes drive time. • From Thames head South straight through the Kopu roundabout • From SH26 turn left onto Maratoto Rd and travel about 5 km until a junction with access to the Wires Track. • Please park as far off the road as possible at the road end. • Follow the marshal’s instructions. • Beware of the lead and tail vehicles. • All vehicles must show extreme caution when leaving Transition 1 as cyclists will becoming towards them on the Maratoto Road. • Having arrived ahead of time organise yourself so your Vehicle is pointing back towards the Road for a smooth exit once your athlete is on their way. • All vehicles should be on the left on the way down. • First competitors expected 7:45am. Last competitors 8:30am.

Leg 2: 21 km Mountain run Maratoto to Whangamata School (Multisport & Duathlon)

Running across the Ford up the hill onto the Maratoto Track over to Wentworth Valley Road. There will be a marker at the fork in the track. Follow any Blue arrows and do not cross tape lying on the floor secured to a bush/tree. Once over the top come down the hill past the waterfall, through the track exit and small car park. Once out through the Camp ground run alongside the sealed road for approx. 4-5kmmain road for approx. Then turn left onto SH25 towards Whangamata

SUPPORT CREW NOTES: • You may transition anywhere between this junction and the ford at the bottom of the Road. • The 400-metre stretch is gravel – some choose to ride it, and others prefer to run towards you. • To get to Whangamata Allow 70 minutes drive time. Head South and anti-clockwise when coming out of the Maratoto Road • Fastest run time is 1 hr 35 mins so it is best not to waste time here.

Leg 3: 40km Cycle Whangamata School to Tairua (Duathlon) Heading North out of Whagamata follow the instructions of the Marshalls to head along Mayfair Road out of Whangamata towards Tairua (if a Duathlete)

Marshals are positioned to direct cyclists on the correct route, and additional signage is used as you leave Whangamata.

Duathletes will ride through to Hikuai and go round towards Tairua.

Once in Tairua head up the main drag turning right onto Ocean Beach Road, there will be marshalls here to signify the turn. Please obey road rules and turn across the traffic with care. Drop down onto Ocean Beach Road to the Finish line

SUPPORT CREW NOTES: • Drive all the way to Whangamata, turn right down the main street, and drive to the far end of town, where transition will be on the right-hand side of the road, just after the school. • Follow the marshal’s instructions. • Once your athlete has moved on out of Leg 3 then drive North towards the Kopu/Hikuai hill. Turn right towards Whangamata. • Drive all the way to Tairua (if a Duathelte team) • Once in Tairua head up the main drag turning right onto Ocean Beach Road, there will be marshalls here to signify the turn. • Expected time for this leg is 55 minutes!

Leg 3: 30 km Cycle Whangamata School to Hikuai (Multisport) Heading North out of Whagamata follow the instructions of the Marshalls to head along Mayfair Road out of Whangamata towards Tairua (if a Multi-sporter) SUPPORT CREW NOTES: • Drive all the way to Whangamata, turn right down the main street, and drive to the far end of town, where transition will be on the right-hand side of the road, just after the school. • Follow the marshal’s instructions. • Once your athlete has moved on out of Leg 3 then drive North towards the Kopu/Hikuai hill. Turn right towards Whangamata. • Drive all the way to Hikuai (if a Multi-sporter), Prepare Kayak for athlete • Head of toward Tairua after change over. • Once in Tairua head up the main drag turning right onto Ocean Beach Road, there will be marshalls here to signify the turn. • Your athlete wil Finish on the beach north of the Pier • Expected time for this leg is 1:25 minutes! Leg 4: 15 km Kayak from Hikuai to the Tairua Wharf to (Multisport) SUPPORT CREW NOTES: • From Whangamata drive North towards the Kopu/Hikuai hill. 10 km down the road you will cross a bridge at Hikuai. Turn left (it is the Pauanui turn off) and park safely on the roadside. • PLEASE follow the marshal’s direction if asked, this road is not wide. The road is OPEN to normal traffic including a few trucks which will pass by. So keep you eyes open and DO NOT put your kayak on the road. • The transition is across a paddock at the back of a private residence, and the paddock is too wet for us to park in, so kayaks must be carried across the paddock to cars. • Transition at your car or in the carpark. • The landowners also own the petrol station nearby so please repay their kindness by fuelling up if you feel so inclined. • Allow 15 minutes drive time. • Fastest time for this leg is 50 minutes.

• Meet your athletes in Tairua at the Beach on Wharf Road

** As per usual the Tairua Bowling Club will be used for post race massage and meal….

Please encourage your team mates and Support crew to come along to the Meal and Briefing at the Bowling Club as the spot prizes and Day One prizes will be given out then. Not only top spots but some random Prizes as well !!

• Massage will be available at the Tairua Bowling Club from 2 pm. • The Tairua Bowling Club Bar will be open from 5 pm. • This is the venue for dinner as well. The meal will be from 6:30 pm. • The briefing will be held during dinner at 7:30 pm. • For those new to the race, it is tradition for us to decide what time we will start Day 2 at this briefing, so it is best not to miss it! DAY 2 Leg 1: (Duathlon) 50km Road Cycle – Tairua to Coroglen via Cooks Beach (Duathlon) The first Duathlon leg for the day is a 50km cycle leg from Tairua to Coroglen via Cooks Beach. Cyclists ride towards Cooks Beach from Tairua. There are marshals on all corners leading to Cooks Beach. At Cooks Beach you will be required to show your Bib number to the Marshalls before retracing your ride back from Cooks Beach and on towards Coroglen. Once again, marshals will be at all corners leading to Coroglen. SUPPORT CREW NOTES: • Follow the main road back to Coroglen. • The end of this Leg is just South of the Coroglen Pub. • The paddock has a turnaround and toilet block. Please be mindful to not congest this area • Allow 30 minutes drive time. • Fastest time for this leg is expected to be around 75 minutes.

Leg 1: (Multi-sport) 25km Road Cycle – Tairua to Cooks Beach (Multi-sport) The first Multi-sport leg for the day is a 25km cycle leg from Tairua to Cooks Beach. Cyclists ride towards Cooks Beach from Tairua. There are marshals on all corners leading to Cooks Beach. At Cooks Beach you will be required to show your Bib number before entering the water.

SUPPORT CREW NOTES: • Follow the main road to Cooks Beach. • Turn right at the Hall and follow your nose (200 meters left) to the beach. • Allow 30 minutes drive time. • Fastest time for this leg is expected to be around 75 minutes.

Leg 2: (Multisport) 17km Kayak – Cooks Beach to Coroglen (Multisport)

Head out from the Beach heading West (left) go around the Head and proceed South up the towards the estuary. Safety boats are out on the course, placed along the Whitianga harbour and out to Cooks Beach. Marshals direct competitors through the finish of Leg 3.

SUPPORT CREW NOTES: • From Cooks Beach travel back in the direction you have come and follow the signs to Coroglen. • If the weather is rough and we shorten the kayak (to finish inside the harbour mouth), carry on straight ahead at the hall and drive approx 2 km to the road end. • The end of this Leg is just South of the Coroglen Pub. • The paddock has a turnaround and toilet block. Please be mindful to not congest this area • We will advise this at the end of the mountain run if applicable. • Allow 20 minutes drive time. • Fastest time for the kayak is 1hr 20min to Cooks Beach and 59mins for the shortened course option. Leg 2: Duathlon – MTB – 15km Leg 3: Multi-sport – MTB – 15km Coroglen to Start of Karaka track on the Tapu Road Athletes will head North from Coroglen on the MTB mindful of crossing the Traffic. Follow Marshalls instructions should they be given. Respect Road Rules and other Road Uses when crossing the traffic and waiting to move through the one-way bridge heading North to turn West onto the Tapu Road just after the Bridge. (Do not cycle pas the Coroglen Pub – you’ve gone too far)

Once on the Road you will be climbing for 15km to then level out and meet your Support vehicles that will be on the left- hand side.

SUPPORT CREW NOTES: • Head North from the Transition area at Coroglen and West along the Tapu Road but be mindful that there is limited space at the next Transition area. • Fastest time for this leg will be around 45 minutes. Allow a 25 minute drive time. • You will see a row of Traffic cones on your left. Park just after those on the left. • Follow instructions of Marshalls as this is a potentially congested area

Leg 3: Duathlon – Run – 22km Leg 4: Multi-sport – Run – 22km This is the Final Leg for both categories and sees a new Leg for the race. The Karaka Run track heading South back towards Thames finishing at the High School playing Fields.

Once you have transitioned please bear left towards the start of the Karaka Track were you will have to ensure you go through the Kauri die back mats to clean your shoes.

This is (overall) descending run back to Thames. Be mindful of navigating the track as there maybe debris on it due to recent storms. You will be following signs for Crosbies Hut then Thames then Karaka

Once you exit the track and down the road taking a left at the junction and head along 2 blocks toward the school.

You must wait and cross the road at the Zebra crossing which will be staffed by Marshalls.

Enter the playing fields on the far side of the large white building.

SUPPORT CREW NOTES:

• Head West along the Tapu road towards Thames. This road is now 11km to the main road. • Head South towards Thames and proceed to Rolleston Street on the East side of the High School to the Finish. • Fastest time for this leg will be around 1hr 50 minutes.
