Stepney Episcopal Area

The Revd Paul Bagott

Paul has been vicar of our most Holy Redeemer, Clerkenwell and St Mark’s Myddelton Square for fifteen years. He trained at Westcott House, served his title at St Peter and St Paul Chingford in the Diocese of Chelmsford and served a second curacy at St Saviours and St James the Less Pimlico.

While in Clerkenwell, he was Chaplain to the Moorfields Hospital for three years and was Chairman of the Governors of Clerkenwell Parochial School and still continues to serve the governing body. He is currently a member of the Diocesan Board for Schools.

In the fourteen years at Clerkenwell both churches have been major fund raising projects to repair their roofs. At St Marks they give a home to The London Christian Meditation Centre. At Holy Redeemer they have developed The Exmouth Market Centre as a community centre.

He was glad to have had the opportunity to have a colleague in training as Stipendiary Assistant Curate and another colleague this year who is Self- sustained minister. Paul serves on the Stepney Area Council, helped in the planning of the Stepney Area Pilgrimage to Rome and currently helping plan a Pilgrimage for the Stepney Area to Spain. He has recently been appointed a Priest Vicar at Westminster Abbey for his work as the Chaplain to the Society of Our Lady of Pew. He is Assistant Chaplain on the Council of the London District of St. John’s Ambulance. He serves on the United Kingdom Committee for the Papua New Guinea Church Partnership and is a member of the Groucho Club.

Paul was born in a vicarage, the youngest son of a cleric, so clergy life came as no surprise to him!

The Revd Jonathan Clark

Jonathan is Rector of St Mary Stoke Newington and Priest-in-charge of St John Brownswood Park, with previous experience in university chaplaincy and theological education.

"I have experience in spiritual direction, tutoring, and work consultancy as well as ministerial review. People tell me they value my sense of humour, unflappability and analytical skills. I bring to ministerial review a concern for the whole person, and the aim of making the review serve your needs. I particularly value working across the whole spectrum of church tradition and theology.” The Revd Fraser Dyer

Fraser was a consultant in the voluntary sector for almost twenty years, with a specialism in managing volunteers. He is co-author of two management books for charities, and his most recent book, Why Do I Do This Every Day?, explores the nature of meaningful work.

He was previously employed by Traidcraft and Greenpeace and remains committed to fair trade and sustainability. He is a trustee of Daily Life Ltd, a disability-led organisation through which artist Bobby Baker produces her work (lately focussing on mental health), and of Soul of Europe which supports Revd Donald Reeves' peace-building work in Britain and the Balkans.

He is now assistant curate at St Peter De Beauvoir Town, and pleased to be living within walking distance of several excellent pubs, an independent cinema and two jazz venues.

Ms Vivette Ferguson

Vivette is a teacher, (part-time) at Tyssen Community Primary School in Hackney. She was a headteacher of a church school and the Hackney Representative on the London Diocesan Board for Schools for several years.

She has two grown up children and has lived in Hackney for over forty years. She worships at St Peter De Beauvoir Town, a culturally diverse church where she has at one time or another been Churchwarden and Deanery Synod Representative. Vivette is a Pastoral Assistant. Vivette is a member of SAMEAG.

Since 2001, he has worked as an independent consultant in health care, in particular with the EU Commission assisting in the Accession process. With extensive experience in mentorship, leadership and personal development, his work as a spiritual director, with a strong Franciscan bias, has been underpinned by the SD programme at Durham University. His consultancy work is based on process management and the achievement of change in a personal development framework. He is an assistant priest attached to Christ St John with St Luke’s on the Isle of Dogs and acts as Bishop’s adviser on healthcare. He has recently been appointed as Dean for SSMs in the Stepney Area and elected as Provincial Formation Guardian for the SSF Tertiaries in the European Province.

The Revd Prebendary David Paton

Having been a Barrister for 12 years, he was ordained in 1983 and for the next 15 years he was a parish priest in the Stepney Area at St Matthew Bethnal Green, St Mary, Cable Street and St Barnabas, Bethnal Green and the Area Dean of Tower Hamlets. He moved to the City Deanery in 1998 where he was Area Dean. He is a Spiritual Director to clergy and laity from all churchmanships. The Revd Tom Pyke

Tom was born near Manchester, but moved to South Wales at six months of age. He went to school in Cardiff and there nurtured a love of the sea, boats and ships which has never entirely left him.

He went to Durham University and read English Language and Medieval Literature, finding that the best bits of the course were to do with pre- Conquest texts. In Durham he formally became an ordinand. Tom did two years with the OTC in the North East, , and a respect for the work of the Armed Forces goes back to this time. At Durham Tom met Sue, they were married in 1986 and they have two school-age children.

Tom nursed at St Christopher’s Hospice for a year, and then went to Ridley Hall for three years. He enjoyed the rigour of Tripos, and came out away from Cambridge a lot broader in views. He isn’t very keen on labels. Though his worship and spirituality is catholic he likes mission which has an emphasis on personal discipleship, and which is characterised by awe at God’s grace.

His first curacy was in the Team Parish of Hitchin. After five years there he moved to be Chaplain in an ecumenical team at Aston University. Five years on again, and he moved a little north, and a bit sideways to be Industrial Chaplain and Vicar for the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. In this role he worked on the regeneration on community in a newly residential area.

In November of 2006 Fr. Tom moved to the Isle of Dogs to be the Vicar of both Christ Church and St Luke’s. St Luke’s is currently the focus of a redevelopment scheme. Tom is also RNR Chaplain to HMS President, a role that brings a different perspective, and refreshment to his ministry. He is keen to encourage other priests to offer themselves as reservist chaplains in the armed services.

Tom’s work interests are in a traditional pattern of pastoral ministry, utilising the skills of lay teams. Outside work Tom enjoys gardening, hill walking and DIY. He writes poetry when the Muse is active, especially enjoying playing with the difference kinds of sonnet. He tortures the guitar and the recorder every now and then, but only for his own amusement. Mrs Carol Rider

Carol has lived in Central London for over 17 years, during this time she has brought up 3 children, gained a Psychology degree and Systemic Family Therapy accreditation.

For the past 5 years she has worked full time in a small primary school in Tower Hamlets engaging parents and working with the extended schools agenda.

She worships at Christ Church Spitalfields.

He has taught on a range of courses and taken workshops in liturgy and eucharistic presidency. He is used as a spiritual director. The Revd Dave Tomlinson

Prior to being a vicar, Dave led Holy Joes for ten years – a group that met in a pub in south London offering space for church drop-outs and unchurched spiritual seekers to explore God-stuff over a pint of beer, or a glass of wine. Dave is the author of several books including The Post-Evangelical and Re-Enchanting Christianity. He is also a regular speaker at events like Greenbelt.

Dave is a qualified teacher of the Enneagram, a personality indicator combining ancient wisdom and modern psychology, which he uses constantly in counselling, pastoral work and spiritual direction.
