COURSE THEMES
1. Peopling population- example of immigrant from another country, years ago, who was happy to be part of the group of Americans, who are free to think as they wish current groups we’re discussing: slaves, indentured servants it makes a difference, which group we’re talking about women have particular concerns men have particular concerns each group has particular concerns-groups may influence to get what they need/want
“All men are created equal…”-how did slaveholders feel about that statement? -how did slave feel about that statement? two different groups saw an entirely different history we may wish to look at how groups have changed over time. example: Native Americans Immigrants Republicans
1 we need to think about history from the perspective of a group because it can make a difference
Why do Cubans vote Republican rather than Democrat, like many other Hispanic groups? Fidel Castro took over Cuba, and the people fled his Communist rule,
Other groups come here, escaping gangs, poverty, drugs, and their thinking is different.
2. Economics money- where do we get our $$-jobs, work how, where, we work unemployment banks, businesses (trade) rich, poor (poor may not have the time to vote)
3. America in the World -the world affects us, we affect the world Are we the only country in the neighborhood? We impact others Last night the President gave a speech about a strategy to go after terrorists in the Middle East-his speech affects people all around the world example-what do we know about Anthony Johnson? he was called Antonio because he got the name from a Spanish or Portuguese slave trader he gets taken away from Africa, brought to America to work, no way to go back-his life was affected because someone in Virginia needed someone to work in the fields prior to Americans arriving, Native Americans’ lives changed-they used to hunt in fields, and now they’re tobacco fields
