Lrms Kettle Creek Crusaders Skype Antarctica!

“WORDS CAN HURT:” LRMS KETTLE CREEK CRUSADERS SKYPE ANTARCTICA! LRMS RECOGNIZES NO NAME CALLING WEEK

The Kettle Creek Crusaders were excited to participate The week of January 19 - 23 is nationally referred to as in a teleconference call (Skype) with scientists at the "No Name Calling Week" (NNCW). As in previous years, bottom of the world! These scientists are studying the staff and students at LRMS recognized this week with impacts of local oceanographic processes on the Adeile activities. Students school-wide crafted bookmarks with Penguin foraging ecology in Antarctica (Project messages discouraging bullying such as “Sticks and Converge). Stones Can Break Our Bones;” “Say NO to Name Calling,” and “Words Can Hurt.” The bookmarks are Leading up to the call, students participated in lessons distributed all year during book checkout in the library. and labs studying concepts related to the ecology of Initiatives like this are what make LRMS a National Antarctica and the penguin colony. The students then School of Character! crafted pertinent questions to ask the scientists.

The Kettle Creek Crusaders were thrilled to be able to actually speak to the scientists “in person” and ask their questions. They gathered details about the penguin colony, learned about the scientists’ routines, and discovered what it’s really like living in Antarctica.

During coming weeks, the Crusaders will pose the scientific question (What are the similarities and differences between converge zones and tornadoes or cyclones?), and design a lab to test and prove their theory. Their data and conclusions will be displayed at a symposium of the project at Liberty Science Center in April, and students will meet the scientists in person! LRMS’ “CAPS FOR KIDS DAY” RAISES MONEY FOR KIDS WITH CANCER

INTERACT, a community service club at LRMS, raised $211 for sick children by sponsoring a “CAPS 4 KIDS” day! Students donated a dollar to wear a hat in solidarity for those children battling cancer. The money was donated to Caps for Kids, which provides a cap autographed by the athlete, entertainer or other notable celebrity of their choice to a child battling cancer. The children gain strength from the autographed caps, and feel as though their celebrity hero is beside them in every treatment and fight in the battle against cancer. WHAT TIME IS IT? YEARBOOK TIME!

Students on the yearbook committee at LRMS are in the midst of assembling this year’s record of memories. It’s a collaborative effort that utilizes technology as the tool. The students help the photographer with group pictures, collect candid shots and baby pictures, and format Laker Leader and class picture pages. They choose the layout and type the names and information to correspond to the pictures. At the end of the year, the yearbook staff organizes the books to be distributed to students. This is all overseen by Mrs. Smith, yearbook
