May 2017 Events

Every Thursday STPS leads Trail Maintenance Outings. To Volunteer call Ken Bieger, 631-283-5432. Volunteers are also needed to clean up our adopted road every month. Call Dai Dayton, 631-745-0689.

Thurs., May 4-STPS Monthly Meeting. 7PM-9PM. STPS’s next meeting will be held in the lower conference room of Southampton Town Hall, 116 Hampton Road. All are welcome! For further information: 631-726-7503.

Sat., May 6-Clam Island County Park. 9:00AM-10:00AM- Meet at end of Noyac Bay Avenue, Sag Harbor. Moderately-paced 2 mile beach hike with bay views of Jessup’s Neck. Leader: Doreen Johnston, 516-994-5947.

Sun., May 7-Elliston Park. 10AM-11:30AM. Meet at the Elliston Park entrance on Millstone Brook Road, Southampton. Moderately-paced 3 mile hike with views of Big Fresh Pond and Wolf Swamp. Leader: Howard Reisman, 631-283-5376.

Sat., May 13-David Sarnoff Preserve. 10AM-2PM. Meet at C.R. 104 DEC parking lot in Riverhead. Dirt parking lot is on the west side of C.R. 104 midway between C.R. 105 and C.R. 31. Moderately-paced 9 mile hike with some rough terrain. Will need volunteers to shuttle to the beginning of the hike. Experience the most beautiful trail west of the Canal, but first we’ll have to hike along an unfortunately damaged trail. Hike leader, Ken Kindler will turn you away if you haven’t prepared for ticks. Please contact him if you need guidance about tick protection. Sun., May 14-Mother’s Day Hike in the Long Pond Greenbelt. 9AM-10:30AM. Meet at the Long Pond Greenbelt Nature Center, 1061 Bridgehampton/Sag Harbor Turnpike. Join Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt for a moderately-paced 3 mile hike through oak/hickory forest with views of Crooked Pond, Long Pond and Deer Drink. Leader: Dai Dayton, 631-745-0689.

Tues., May 16-Laurel Valley. 10AM-Noon. Meet at the kiosk located on Deerfield Road in Noyac across from Deerwood Path (North Side Hills). Moderately-paced 3 mile hike through wooded knolls and laurel-filled ravines. Hilly terrain. Leader: Chip Dineen, 646-221-8225.

Two Event Saturday Sat. May 20-Mulvihill Preserve. 10:00AM-11:30AM. Meet at the Mulvihill Preserve, 820 Brick Kiln Road, Sag Harbor - entrance opposite Highview Drive (look for the white pillars and drive to end). Moderately-paced 3+mile hike through this historically interesting area. Vernal ponds, kettle holes, glacial erratics, the Great Swamp. Leader: Jean Dodds, 631-599-2391.

From May 19 - May 21, the Flanders, Riverside & Northampton Community Association (FRNCA) will be having their first ever "Taste of Flanders Festival." Everyone is invited to attend this 3 day Food Truck Festival at the Truth Community Church property on Flanders Rd in Flanders between the Flanders Northampton Volunteer Ambulance Barn and the Crohan Community Center at 645 Flanders Rd. 16 food trucks will be selling ethnic, restaurant quality food. There will be music and raffles. The East Hampton YMCA will be hosting a FREE Field Day at Ludlum Avenue Park with a 30' tall Rock Climbing Wall to encourage kids to get active. The Southampton Trails Preservation Society will host 2 nature walks to encourage residents to explore the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Sat., May 20-Flanders Festival Sears Pond Hike. 10AM-Noon. Meet at the kiosk on Spinney Road, Flanders on the south side of CR24 just east of Birch Creek Moderately-paced 4 mile hike through the amazing Long Island Pine Barrens with pond views. Enjoy the FRNCA food truck festival after hiking at 645 Flanders Road. Leader: Jim Crawford, 631-481-6228.

Two Event Sunday Sun. May 21-Flanders Festival Hubbard Creek Hike. 10AM-Noon. Meet on Red Creek Road in Hampton Bays, 100 yards from Route 24. Moderately-paced hike with numerous water views, a waterfall and several ponds. See Black Duck Lodge. Enjoy FRNCA food truck festival after hiking at 645 Flanders Road. Sun., May 21-Horses on Trails (HOT). Sagaponack Beach Ride (if weather permits). Bring your own horse and helmet. STPS/HOT membership required due to insurance. It's easy to join on the day of the ride! Please contact Leslie Lowery, 631-603-8661 for reservations and more information.

Sat., May 27-Kayak Scallop Pond. 10AM-Noon. Meet on Scallop Pond Road, Southampton. Kayak one of the most pristine salt marshes left on eastern Long Island and part of Sebonac Creek Estuary. BYO kayak, paddle & lifejacket. Life jackets are mandatory. Leader: Marilyn Kirkbright, 631-726-7503

Two Event Sunday Sun., May 28-Narrow Lane Cleanup. 8AM-9AM. Help STPS clean up litter from our adopted road. Meet on Narrow Lane, and east corner of Norris Lane. Bring gloves. Leader: Dai Dayton, 631-745-0689.

Sun., May 28-Bridgehampton Hills. 1PM-4PM 5-Mile Circle Hike through Historic Sag Harbor Woodlands Meet in the grassy triangle at the junction of Brick Kiln and Stoney Hill Roads. Hike the Paumanok Path here and head south along a ridge above the Mulvihill farm house. Pass a colonial era clay pit and brick kiln, a duck farm; then cross to the west to Whiskey Hill and a view of the ocean. Here head north along wooded trails and old cart roads to Middle Line Highway, still maintained only for foot travel. Leader: Mark Potter, 631-725- 0450.
