Below is a list of all sites and monuments that require immediate conservation or repair. Contained within each statement is short description of the problem followed by a brief summary of the positive management required.

Beckstones Farm

NTSMR 26234 This ruined barn has recently been consolidated to preserve what remains of the original structure. A brief survey should be made to ensure that this consolidation has been successful in limiting further erosion of the building fabric. Additional wall topping or wall supporting may be necessary.

Hartsop Hall Farm

NTSMR 25646 A number of slates have been lost from the roof of this outhouse located close to Hartsop Hall Farm. These should be replaced immediately to avoid any further deterioration.

NTSMR 27160 A number of trees have become established on the leat that served Hartsop Hall lead mine. These trees need to be removed as part of future woodland thinning to avoid damage to the leat in the future.

NTSMR 27162 The remains of this ore washing and processing house at Hartsop Hall lead mine is in need of immediate consolidation to avoid any further deterioration. A detailed survey of the mine should be undertaken to provide a basis to inform long term management and conservation.

NTSMR 27163 Although this building is in a poor state of repair consolidation of the existing remains should be seen as a priority. The left hand side wall is in real danger of collapse and this wall should be strengthened to prevent collapse as soon as resources are available. The existing walls should be consolidated where necessary. The flue situated over the fireplace is a particularly interesting feature and should be carefully preserved.

NTSMR 27166 The processing area at the Hartsop Hall lead mine is slowly being covered/ destroyed by the movement of the spoil heap above (ntsmr 27164). Consolidation of what still remains of this industrial complex should be undertaken. A detailed survey of the mine should be undertaken to record what is left of the site and provide a basis to inform long term management and conservation.

NTSMR 27168 Three coppice stools need to be removed from this charcoal burning platform as part of future woodland thinning.

NTSMR 27199 The documented site of the early hall at Hartsop is in desperate need of attention. At present the site is covered over with brick rubble and only one corner stone of the foundations can now be seen. A long-term plan for the eventual recovery and care of this monument needs to be drawn up and implemented, as the current state of this monument is unacceptable in the long-term.

NTSMR 27207 This sheepfold should be considered for reinstatement if the site can be adopted for use today.

NTSMR 27208 The old alder trees located on the edge of this charcoal burning platform need to be removed as part of future woodland thinning as soon as possible. NTSMR 27274 Three small birch trees on the edge of this charcoal burning platform need to be removed as part of future woodland thinning as soon as possible.

NTSMR 27276 The dam that feeds the leat running to Hartsop Hall lead mine has been seriously damaged through water run off and tree falls. A total of five trees need to be removed from the dam structure as soon as possible. The stone work on the downslope edge of the dam is in need of restoration to prevent any further damage. Some stone material will need to be recovered from the adjacent beck.

NTSMR 27364 An ash tree growing on the side of this level needs to be removed.

How Green Farm

NTSMR 21349 This field barn is in need of general consolidation work to avoid further damage to the fabric of the building.

NTSMR 21351 This field barn is in a good general state of repair, although work is required to replace a number of slates lost in a storm.

NTSMR 20447 The waterwheel housing at Myers Head lead mine has recently been consolidated although more work is needed to complete the safety and interpretation work. A young Elderberry tree was seen to be becoming established in the wheel pit and should be removed as soon as possible. A small section of recently consolidated stonework has also fallen away. This gap should be repaired as soon as possible to avoid further deterioration. Appendix 5 - Frequency of site types

A total of 539 individual archaeological monuments, find spots and routeways were recorded within the survey area and are listed in appendix 1.

The tables below list all recorded archaeological sites in separate typologies, the total number of a particular monument type is given in brackets. Sites only appear once in this list, for example ruined hogg houses do not also appear in the ntsmr listing for ‘buildings’.

All material produced while undertaking this Historic Landscape Survey is held at the National Trust North-West Regional Office, Grasmere.

Archaeological information

A complete set of 1:2500 and 1:10000 scale map sheets showing the boundaries of the survey and annotated with archaeological sites described using field numbers. These field numbers correspond with a pro-forma record sheet completed in the field for that site and cross-references with a NTSMR number.

A complete set of pro-forma sheets containing information relating to each archaeological site, monument or building completed in the field as part of the survey.

Boundary information

Each separate stretch of boundary within the survey was recorded onto the same 1:2500 or 1:10000 scale map sheets used to record archaeological sites and monuments. Each boundary was given a field code, these codes correspond to a separate boundary pro-forma recording sheet.

A complete set of boundary pro-forma sheets recording the preservation, fabric and extant furniture of each standing wall boundary within the survey area.

Documentary material

All primary source documents referred to in this report are held at the Public Record Office at either Carlisle and Kendal. Where it has been possible to photocopy original material, copies of original documents are contained in the survey archive consisting of two lever arch files held at the North West Regional Office.

The relevant Vernacular Building Survey report are also held at the North-West Regional Office.

Information on Scheduled Monuments and Listed Buildings within the survey area is held on file at the North-West Regional Office.

Other archival material

A good collection of colour slides is also available for presentations or publications.
