INSTRUCTOR CONSIDERATIONS

This chapter emphasizes  using the WebQuest model  applying netiquette, ethics and safety when using the Internet  Web 2.0 tools  Web-based applications  online task generators  evaluating websites  creating an inquiry-based lesson using the Internet as the resource

CHAPTER OBJECTIVES  Define Internet-related terms.  Explain the difference between the Internet and the Web.  Identify the services available on the Web.  Explain the options for connecting to the Internet and the advantages and disadvantages of each option.  Use search tools for information gathering on the Web.  Apply knowledge of “netiquette,” ethics, and safety on the Web.  Evaluate educational web sites.  Identify Web 2.0 tools and ways that such tools can be used in the classroom.  Review lessons that integrate the use of the Internet to enhance the curriculum.  Plan and develop a student-centered inquiry-based lesson that uses the Internet as a tool for learning.  Identify methods for adapting and using computer systems with special learners.

ASSESSMENT / FEEDBACK

Standard Assessment Items  Core Knowledge and Skills: Chapter 5 (can be used for baseline or pre/post self report)  Chapter 5 test bank – contains 15 questions (11 technology and 4 adapting for special learners) • Alternative Assessment Ideas Reflective blog entries A blog is used for reflective practice as well as a way to assess student work. In this chapter, students could 1) Reflect on using WebQuests in the classroom. 2) Reflect on how to use Wikis for collaboration for professional purposes as well as in the classroom. 3) Discuss the advantages/disadvantages of using web-based applications Teach mini lesson Teams of 2 or 3 research a web-based application, create a step by step guide, and teach it to the class. Applications may include those found in Zoho.com, Thinkfree.com and Google Documents or others that the instructor wishes.

SAMPLE LESSON OUTLINE

Prior to lesson Students should read chapter 5 and complete core knowledge/skills check sheet Introduction Introduction to chapter information with discussion of slideshow (PDF of slideshow available for student download from Student Materials at the Companion Website) Key Concept  Evaluation of educational websites Focus  Ethics and Safety on the Internet  Differences in Web 1.0 & Web 2.0  Using Web 2.0 tools  Blogs  Wikis  WebQuests  Creating a curriculum connection for an inquiry-based lesson Application  A website is chosen by the student for use with their future students. This site is evaluated by the student and handed in for assessment.  WebQuest for WebQuest is used to acquaint the students with the WebQuest model. This can be extended by placing students in teams and have the team create a WebQuest.  Teams are placed in groups to collect websites using a Wiki for the classroom website.  Students (in pairs) create a curriculum connection for in inquiry based lesson using the Web as the information source. Questioning  What are the main parts of a WebQuest?  How do blogs promote learning?  How do wikis promote learning  Why should teachers evaluate web sites that their students will use?  How do objectives effect learning? Practice/  With a partner, create a lesson  Template for plan Feedback plan to accompany a mini lesson on a Web 2.0 tool.
