Combined Course Syllabus Fall 2012 and Spring 2012

Course Description Welcome to Woodworking, Woodworking will provide students with a general introduction to the safe and proper use of all types of woodworking tools. Hand tools, portable power tools, and stationary power tools will be discussed in detail giving the student the knowledge and confidence to operate each tool safely and effectively. In Woodworking III & IV there will be an emphasis will be on project fabrication utilizing a variety of machining processes.

Essential Discipline Goal  Demonstrate the proper and safe use of hand, portable, and stationary power equipment.  Demonstrate the ability to apply mathematical concepts. o Ruler reading o Calculate board footage and project cost o Fraction/decimal conversions  Demonstrate personal safe work habits in the lab at all times  Demonstrate quality craftsmanship through project fabrication  Demonstrate the safe handling and application of wood finishes Woodworking III & IV  Demonstrate the ability to utilize the design process

Materials required: A three ring binder or folder will allow you to keep hand-outs, and worksheets in an orderly fashion and in chronological order and pencils. Assignments must include the student’s name, date, and name of the class. Students are expected to participate in all assigned shop activities. Rubber sole shoes are important to prevent slips and falls. No open toes sandal type shoes are allowed in the shop work areas at any time. Long hair must be tied or clipped back. Safety glasses are required and provided.

Grading Policy The following is to be used as a guideline and will assist you in determining your progress in the class. These figures are for each term. Grades will be posted to pinnacle in a timely manner and is the best source of progress for the student. Students and parents are encouraged to check frequently for current grades.

Woodworking I & II Classroom Assignments, Test, Quizzes and Project 50% Work Habit, Participation and Shop/Lab Clean-Up 40% Home Work and Safety Tests 10% Total 100% Woodworking III & IV Classroom Assignments, Test, Quizzes and Project 35% Work Habit, Participation and Shop/Lab Clean-Up 35% Project Plans and Design Process 20% Home Work and Safety Tests 10% Total 100%

Assignments given in class are usually due the day they are given. Students absent on the day the work is given will be required to make up the work the day returning to school. If you do not turn in the work within two school days you may receive a zero and not be able to make up the work for credit. You should still turn in the work to be graded. Exceptions will be made for students with extended absences.

Woods Projects pricing  Students will be charged for wood by the board foot. Wood materials may be paid for by check made out to Middletown high school, Wood materials that are brought in from home must be new materials: (without Nails,, Screws, Glue or finish)  Typical price range for project $40-85
