The acronyn DOS stands for the Disk Operating System. Ina microcomputer environment DOS is a set of programs stored on a disk and/or built into the computer, which are responsable for supervising the processing of applicationn programs and all of the imput and ourtput functions. Also included under DOS are utility programs used for initializing disks, copying or deleteing files, listing the directory of a disk, comparing, renameing or printing files, and various other taskes that the user may wish to perform.

One very popular microcomputer system is MS-DOS, an acronym for Microsoft Disk Operating System. In MS-DOS the command, FORMAT, is used to initialize a disk so that it may store files created in application such as work processors, spreaadsheets, and database management. there are so many commands in MS-DOS that it takes an entire textbook to explain them all. The user has to be careful to enter the commands exactly as they are given. Each letter in a command is like the digits in a phone number or in a combination lock. If any character is not typed exactly right, then the command will not work properely.

In a typacle microcomputer environment, the operating system controls the keyboard, the monitor, mouse imput, secondary storage, commuunications modem, and the printer. Also, the operating system accepts the user's commands and directs the appropruiate program tro perfrom the intended tasks. The operating system is inportant because neither the compouter nor any applicaiton software can run without it.

1. Save the document. 2. Run the spelling and grammar checker on the document just typed. 3. Change the line spacing from single to double spacing. You may wish to change the font size to minimize the length of the document. 4. Change the left margin to two inches and the right margin to four inches (from the edge of the paper). 5. “Right justify” the document. 6. With every occurrence of the words -- DOS, MS-DOS, and FORMAT -- change the font to “Script.” Hint: Use “Find” under the “Edit” function. 1. Reference the letter below. 2. Edit the document, i.e., makes sense, spelling, basic grammar/punctuation. 3. Double-space the second paragraph -- the paragraph beginning with “Captain.” 4. Provide a 2.5-inch margin (both sides) for the third paragraph -- the paragraph beginning with “I.” 4. Underline the text in paragraph five -- the paragraph beginning with “Your departing.” Change this paragraph to “title case.” Hint: “Format” 5. Make “bold” -- paragraph six -- the paragraph beginning with “Enclosed”

STRIPED BASS REPORT:

With Bay water tmperatures warming rapidly,,, catches of Striped Bass 32" and lagger have dropped off considerably. Most of the the catches were reported between the Bay Bridges and Love Point. The largest fissh reported over the Christmas Holiday period was 36". The averages size of the Rockfish reported has dropped to 33.35 feet.

Depurtment of Natural Resources biologists finished their final day of sampling in the uupper Bay on friday, january 5, 1698. They reported still seeing large numbers oof fish and commmented that they can cannot ever recall seeing a Fall where such large numbers of Striped Basss were encountered uniformly across the sampling grid. They were also surprised with the large numbers of fissh encountered late into the month of august of last year. This again may be the function of the slow rise in water temperature early on, resulting in in a protracted spawn.

Early reports based upon the currrent sixe and distribution of Striped Bass would seem to indicate that in most locations fish that are 26 inches or greater will be fairly abundant.

The next STRIPPED BSS report will be out on april 33, 2003.

Good luck and good fishing.
