ABIM Self-Directed PIM: Completion of activities qualifies for 20 PIM points for MOC as well as 20 AMA PRA Category 1 credits

Caveats:

The below is relevant for Cardiology Group Practices with access to aggregated data via PINNACLE, EHR, Meaningful Use Data, etc. All participants must be enrolled in MOC to receive credit

Steps:

 Create a "team", although one member will be the lead. We have 38 docs and there were 3 members on the Team of varying ages. The lead was the youngest who needed to get his Part 4 Points for MOC Recertification. The 2 others were older and "grandfathers".

 Go to http://www.abim.org/ and login with your 6 digit ABIM# and password

 Under the MY MOC Program heading, click on “Choose a Practice Assessment Activity (Includes PIMs and other activities…)”.

 Under the Practice Asssessment Selector Tool Heading, click on “Self-Directed PIM”

 Click on “Order for a Group”. Follow instructions. Enter Name and ABIM numbers of each participant (it is very important that each participant s’ information be included at the beginning of the project as I have been told that they can not be added later). We chose Primary Prevention Topics with Cholesterol measurement our re-measured item. Easy topics recommended by the ABIM folks for group Part 4 projects.

 Parts A (Orientation), B (Measures and Data). Under section B, choose 3 measures of interest. The retrospective period of time for these three measures must be the same (e.g., Jan through March 2014, 1 month if the "n" is large enough). We compared data from earlier in the year to fourth quarter data.

 C (Action Plan): You will choose one of the 3 measures to restudy prospectively. The prospective period of time can be of your choosing. 1-2 months is reasonable. In this section, you will also need to print out the “Guide for Creating Your Action Plan” and fill it out with assistance from your team. This will make entering the information in section C much easier.

 D (Remeasurement): Enter your prospective data for the variable of interest here. It does not currently matter whether there has been any change in the results, merely that you have instituted a program and re-measured. Our EHR/PINNACLE specialist got us our report, our lead doc entered the info and then submitted the project for everyone listed. The PINNACLE folks are very interested in providing the data in a timely fashion and expedited our report.

 E (Final stages): Verify your participation and claim CME credits. The 20 PIM points will automatically be entered into your account as well as all registered participants. The primary data inputter can also claim 20 CME points at this time as well and print out the certificate. Individual participants can obtain CME credit by clicking on the survey link regarding MOC part 4 on each participant’s respective ABIM home page. Credit will be obtained upon completion of the survey. Thus you can get both 20 MOC Part 4 and CME points.

 You can resurvey different items per year as above and claim the MOC Part 4 and CME points.  We plan to do this every year: identify the project 2nd quarter, measure the beginning of the third and re-measure 4th quarter and complete the project by the end of the year. You can do it whatever way works best for you
